Jeff is a good guy, called a half hour before arrival, did the work we agreed on and also found an additional problem on the roof that he took pictures of and showed me what was wrong and how he could fix it. He completed all the work right then. I would definitely use him for any upcoming chimney/roof jobs.

Minor water damage on our bathroom ceiling indicated a roof leak. We determined the water was coming in through the roof vent pipe and that the pipe collar needed replacing. Thomas responded quickly to my request for a bid with what I felt was a fair price for the work. We arranged a time for him to come to the house. Before the appointed time, he sent a msg letting us know he was on his way. Having been in commercial project mgmnt for 15 yrs, I am familiar with how to correctly flash and seal roof stack pipes. Thomas removed the damaged collar, added a water/ice shield, replaced shingles were needed, and applied sealant where needed. He worked quickly and cleanly. Thomas has thorough knowledge of roofing systems and applications and is clearly experienced in repairing roofs. His business model is to focus on roof inspections and repairs. He does not install roofs. This allows him to charge a reasonable fee that businesses that are primarily roof installation companies are unable to do - there is a cost to take a person of an installation crew in order to do a small roof repair. The price for the work was in line with what I felt was fair. Highly recommend Thomas with Nova CS for roof repairs and/inspections.

Jerry was very responsive in checking on some roof problems I had with my house in Baltimore. He very clearly explained the problems along with future potential problems and we worked out a solution to fix everything. Jerry fixed everything in a timely manner, showed up when he said he would, and was great about sending me pictures of everything. Definitely keeping his information in my phones for next time.

Erick and his crew did a great job constructing an outdoor shed we purchased from Lowes. They had to build a foundation because it was on a slight incline. They added the flashing and shingles in addition to building the shed from scratch. We were pleased with their excellent work and would recommend them to others.

I researched many vendors before selecting Hernandez. They were able to complete the work in 2 weeks, not 2+ months like the larger companies. Also, their price was about half of the quotes that I received from Long Roofing and Thompson's Creek. The work on a large house and shed roof was done in a day in a very professional manner. They took care to protect my bushes and swimming pool from the old shingles. They did a great job of clean up too. They didn't make me sign an exclusive contract like Long Roof insisted upon and didn't require any money up front. Roof looks great.

A tree outside our house was struck by lightening and threw branches on our house. It wasn't until three months later during a series of torrential rainstorms that we discovered it punctured our roof (all the contractors missed it!) and was leaking. Wilder came out and inspected the damage within hours of me contacting him. He gave a fair quote and returned as soon as it was safe to complete the repairs. He was timely in his work and even did a little more shingle repair than we originally agreed upon (he discovered more in need of replacement when he was up there). He took pictures of each step of his work to show that he did the work he promised, and followed up with me at the close of business to confirm the work was okay. Wilder made a very stressful event pleasant to fix. We plan to contact him for future repairs and recommend him to our friends.

The owner, Phillip, was quick to respond and thoroughly answered all of my questions in the weeks leading up to the project. Their pricing was fair and competitive and he included a 25 year transferrable warranty with the new roof (other contractors offered non transferrable 6-10 year warranties). There was some initial miss-communication about including a skylight installation in the project and he assumed it was a replacement rather than new installation, but he honored his original quote and included the installation at no additional cost. His team promptly returned to repair a leak in one of the skylights a few weeks later and everything has been leak-free since. Overall very good experience and would recommend him to others needing full roof replacements.

There needs to be a 6 star. This outfit is a class act. I interviewed 10 firms for my roof replacement . Jason spent time walking me through the project, projected costs and an honest analysis of where I could save money. At several points, I just asked him "if it was your house what would you do" and I always got an honest answer. He also backed up his findings w photos which gave me a high degree of certainty with his integrity and knew I wasn't being taken for a ride. On job day, they were fast, efficient and SUPER friendly. A+ on workmanship and they left the grounds of my house in better shape then when thy arrived. It is seldom to can find a person and company that takes this much pride in their work. 100% recommend with zero reservations.

Erick and Melvin are true professionals. We hired them to install a gutter on the side of our porch roof. Not only was Erick responsive via text and flexible on his availability to do the project around our schedule, they arrived early on the date we planned, ready with all their materials, and completed the project quickly and professionally, answering all my questions throughout. The result was a beautifully completed project that we are more than satisfied with - we couldn't be happier to have chosen them. They were the most reasonably priced, most responsive, and professional throughout the entire experience. We'll be hiring them again for sure! Thank you Erick and Melvin!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can a roof be cleaned?

Yes roofs can be cleaned, and yes, it’s a real thing. Roof cleaning may actually be a wise investment to prolong the life of your roof. Overgrowth of moss, grime, lichen or algae can all shorten the life of your roof. If you have black streaks growing on your roof, they are likely caused by gloeocapsa magma algae spores that have landed on your roof and taken up residence. Once the algae has grown into streaks, the organism has usually been growing for several months and it’s high time to have it removed. If you live in a rainy part of the country, such as the Pacific Northwest, there’s a good chance you’ll find moss growing on your roof at some point. The northern part of your roof, as well as any parts that remain shaded all day, will provide a wet, cool haven for moss to flourish. Unfortunately this water-absorbing moss can damage your shingle roof, leading to rot if not removed. Beyond roof health and function, a clean roof can boost your curb appeal and potentially boost your home’s resale value. The national average for roof cleaning costs ranges between $270 and $350, although prices can be higher depending on how large your roof is, how steep your roof is, and what type of cleaning is necessary. Typically pros use either a pressure wash or chemical wash (made with a concentrated bleach solution) to remove algae, lichen, moss and dirt.

Why do I need to clean my roof?

Over time, algae, moss, lichen, dirt and even salt (if you’re near the ocean) can build up on your roof. These buildups can affect the look and function of your roof unless removed. The buildup of organic materials such as moss on a shingle roof can prevent water from sloughing off as it normally would. Trapped water can rot the roof or cause early deterioration of your shingles. Even if you don’t have a shingle roof, moss and lichen absorb water, and that wet material adds weight and stress to your roof — as well as providing a home for insects and other pests, and collecting dirt. For reflective, cool roofs that redirect heat away from the home, algae and moss growths can hamper their ability to deflect the sun, which can affect utility bills. Visually, moss, dirt and algae growths on a roof can have a negative effect on perceived home value and curb appeal. For example, black algae streaks on your roof may cause a potential homebuyer to assume that the roof might need repair or replacement, when it only needs to be cleaned.

How much does it cost to clean a roof?

The national average for roof cleaning costs ranges between $270 and $350. Factors that can affect the cost to clean your roof are the height of your house, the size and pitch (steepness) of your roof, and the complexity of your roof’s design and accessibility. Geographic location also plays a role in roof cleaning costs as regional labor rates and area costs to do business will vary. There are several ways to clean a roof. The most common is pressure washing. Industrial pressure washers can spray over 3,000 pounds per square inch (psi) of water — which is much too powerful for roof cleaning, and may tear off shingles and damage your roof. Confirm that the roof-cleaning pro you choose will only use a low-pressure sprayer to protect your roof investment. For large algae or moss growths, pros often recommend a combination of low-pressure washing with a bleach-based chemical solution. This is referred to soft washing and should handily remove any growths taking over your roof.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
