Thank you NYP Movers. This was a long distance move. The entire team was incredible to work with! Yehor, Alex, Max, Chris and Valadmir were awesome! They were professional, courteous and unbelievably efficient in every aspect of the move. The care and attention to detail in protecting our belongings were done in such a way as though each piece was priceless. We highly recommend them. The icing on the cake, the total cost was much less then the major moving companies. Great service.

I priced five different moving companies, and this one was the cheapest by far. The movers showed up about 15 or 20 minutes late, but then they worked so quickly that it was just insane to me. On the hottest day of the year, three men moved me from a third story walk up. I bought them lunch just to make them slow down a little, and they were very grateful for the provided water and sports drinks. Even with all that, they still finished two hours sooner than I expected. Their expediency was great, and helped keep the cost of the move down. I was also very impressed with the amount of care they displayed towards my belongings. They wrapped everything in blankets and plastic, and moved my two bedroom apartment without damaging any furniture, walls, or making a mess. I would absolutely use Dulles Logistics and Rentals again.

The great company, very highly recommended. My wife has a 25 years old piano (very memorable she has it since she was 5) and we were most likely thinking to get rid of it when we moved to new place. Because we hired JK moving when we moved and their workers were not even able to move our Piano where we want. THEY WERE NOT EVEN TRY, JUST REFUSED. So we just left our piano at car garage. Anyway we want to place our piano on the 3rd floor and which will be taking with 3 flights, 33 STAIR STEPS from the car garage. So I made 5-6 calls to different piano moving company. Lewis Piano Movers, Van was only very polite, cheaper price with no hidden fees and responding me back quickly. I was even able to schedule it on short notice. They called an hour ahead to let us know they were on their way, arrived on time. They did super great job and worked very fast and Van and his crew were super nice!.

Two weeks ago, I hired A-1 Moving Company to help with my move to Charlotte, NC from Arlington VA. After hearing so many horror stories about moving companies, I was very close to doing this move by myself. I did call multiple companies but felt more comfortable after speaking to a representative over at A-1 Moving Company named LaShawn. Unlike other companies, I was given a fixed price estimate that was fair and guaranteed. The day before my move, the work men came and wrapped and disassembled my furniture. The next morning at 7am, they were en route to NC. I felt at ease knowing that my furniture was not being stored or transported with multiple houses. Once they arrived, the same work men unloaded and reassembled my furniture. Overall, it was an excellent experience and gave me hope that there are good companies out there still! Nothing was broken, the delivery was on time and at a flat rate, and the crew was courteous. Thank You A-1 Moving Company! Blake D.

My family and I couldn't have asked for a better experience than what Zebna Movers provided. From the initial in-home estimate to ultimate delivery of our household goods, the entire Zebna team provided top-notch service at an extremely competitive price. El Ibra, our moving liaison, was prompt, respectful, and truly did everything in his power to ensure that our last-minute move from Virginia to Florida went absolutely seamless. The actual moving team showed up ahead of schedule and worked tirelessly and efficiently to pack our entire 4+ bedroom home in a matter of hours. Since I was forced to remain in Virginia and finalize the sale of our house, the moving crew then traveled to Florida and went out of their way to make absolutely certain my pregnant wife had everything she needed; the team was comprised of genuinely considerate people. We honestly could not have accomplished this move without Zebna's exquisite service. Having requested quotes and meeting representatives from a number of moving companies, I am absolutely certain we made the right choice in selecting Zebna Movers.

I can't say enough about Great Nation Van Lines and our satisfaction with this company. Rose, David and the crew who moved us were a pleasure to work with from beginning to end. Our original moving plan and date had to be changed at the last minute and this company helped make a stressful situation much less stressful and accommodated our needs in every way. The movers were very competent and careful and took great care to assure nothing was broken. We interviewed two other moving companies, one much higher priced and one a little lower but felt the customer service from Great Nation was the best choice. We would highly recommend this company. I needed help moving a large entertainment center to a donation center. Anthony responded to my request immediately, met with me to make sure he had the equipment for the job, was extremely flexible and responsive when several scheduling issues came up on my end, and ultimately moved the unit safely. Anthony also raised a few key questions that I needed to address with the project that saved us a lot of time on the backend. Anthony's pricing on the project was also very reasonable. Overall, a great and very professional experience.

We received quotes from two long distance moving companies in Northern Virginia as well as several others in the area. Skyride Movers had the best rate for our planned move from VA to SC. Despite the cost effective price the service was professional and fast. Everything arrived intact and was put in the appropriate room. I would hire this company again.

Found Tim on thumtack. After getting appointment set, I had to leave town for a couple of weeks. That did not effect Tim's stride, He stayed in touch letting me know he was ready when I was. He assisted us in finding a truck at a reasonable price. On the day he was early and I was late, again it did not break his stride. We were moving a 10x15 storage unit of loosely stacked articles to a 10x10 unit at a more reasonably priced storage facility. Again that did not brake his stride. He with one helper, that he left in his dust at getting the stuff stacked. He stacked the boxes tight and there was know problem getting the articles in the unit. He treats your articles as his. Tim is personable, professional, efficient and affordable. In fact at this time I have scheduled him to take the boxes out of the unit for me to look for some important papers and later in the day return and replace it in the unit. I trust Tim with all my moving needs. He also does several other jobs including drywall and furniture assembling. Thanks to Tim, be using you again. If you don't use Time for you needed services, big mistake.

Had to move all of my stuff from point A to point B. The movers arrived early and were ready to work despite me not being 100% ready. They did the move in exactly 1 hour which is insane since when I first moved it took another moving company over 2 hours. The crew didn't damage a thing and everything arrived at my new place just as it was. Great movers and I'll be using them in the future for sure.

Absolutely amazing moving company! I was worried no one would take such a small job on short notice. However Adrian of Checkmate Professional Services came to our rescue. Adrian arrived 5 minutes early with all of his equipment. He was very professional and asked questions to make sure he was doing everything to our specifications. He helped us move and setup a 350lb outdoor fountain. My wife and I are very grateful for his company. We highly recommend them.

When it was time for me to move, I researched, researched and then researched some more. I talked to many companies. But there was something special about the gentleman on the phone from Pick Up Movers that I decided to hire them. They were absolutely awesome. They packed with military precision. They were out of my house before anyone even knew that I was moving out. I am so very grateful to them for delivering on time and saving the trouble of having to beg them to give me my things back. There are so many inefficient moving companies and fortunately, I got the best one.

I had a last minute emergency at work and needed to move an item from one office building to the other as to not hold up a deal. I contacted all the well known companies (jk moving, collegehunks, etc.). Everyone was booked. I came on here and Ken was very responsive. Sent the addresses, he arrived within an hour of the original request. The item was transported quickly and free of damage. He was also extremely courteous and understanding. I could only choose 3 highlights, but I was satisfied across the board. I would certainly recommend his services and use him again in the future. Thank you Ken.

I hired M&M Moving & Hauling to move larger pieces of furniture out of my grandparents' home. There were a couple of issues with the scheduling where they had miscalculated the time needed for the move scheduled just before mine, but Marvin was up front about it and worked with me to find a mutually agreeable time for my move. There was also a problem with how they placed a couple of the items within the storage unit and I think they were just hot and tired by that point, but we were able to resolve the issue. As I had items moved into a storage unit, I don't know how all of them fared from the move, but they seemed to do a pretty good job with packing it in the truck and making sure items that I wasn't able to wrap were covered during the drive. They also provided a very competitive flat rate that did not contain any hidden fees. I really liked that I knew exactly what I would be paying, but it did take a couple of messages to figure out what was included in the cost. Overall, they did a good job and did it quickly and efficiently. I would hire them again.

Our two helpers were great for moving our large items upstairs. They were quick, made a good team, and were very friendly. My only issue was that they weren’t as familiar with putting the furniture back together, and my husband had to do most of the work on that front. Would definitely hire again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
