I first met Mr. Cole several years ago at a community workshop related to the college process. He was full of information regarding the process with tips for high school students and their parents. We continued this "partnership" with other groups where I was able to invite him to speak about this often confusing and frightening process. Mr. Cole has presented at several NAACP Parents' Council meetings and is always well received by the crowd! I was also able to consult with him personally when my oldest son began his search for the perfect college. I know of others in the Silver Spring community that have included him whenever they plan a meeting or event related to this topic. He includes in his "talk" experiences and anecdotes that we can all learn from. His knowledge is comprehensive and complete. We appreciate having him as part of our community!

We met J. when our son was attending BCC in his last three years of high school. J. worked with us relentlessly for those long and difficult three years. Our son was coming from a different school system and the transition proved to be a very difficult one. While our son loved being in an American educational system, he was hardly equipped for the kind of freedom students enjoy in large high schools where you can basically choose your workload and a wide range of courses.
J. came to our rescue. No other words for his help!
He was our light bearer in those three years.
He tried each and every possible strategy for our son and for us to cope with a bright but indolent teen ager with transcultural issues.
He was our in-between with the school administration who, despite the multicultural student body, had the hardest time at understanding where our child was coming from. He helped us having our son tested for any disabilities, he listened to us talking, complaining, worrying... he listened and took mental notes of all our statements about our son. He listened to him as well, always!
Every trimester J would try a new strategy with and for our son!
At some point, I remember him telling us, once again, "It's a going to be a new, clean slate, a new beginning this semester, do not worry, we are going to succeed!" To which, I recall telling him, "But with all these slates, we are building a ROOF!!!!!!!!!!!" He laughed so hard... and we understood that, indeed, this man was made of pure gold, for he NEVER gave up on our son.
After our son left the school, J. came to our house and helped us with college applications even after his duty as Counselor had long ended....
I doubt you need more of our reflections on J. He is the perfect counselor for any student, but in particular for those who need real, actual, serious and caring advice! our son has the fondest memory of J. and for all the good reasons! our son graduated from college in Politics, he is a wonderful and well-adjusted young adult. Much of what he is today is J.'s merit for he helped us to see our son from a different perspective and to respect him much more than we knew how to do before meeting the BEST COUNSELOR on Earth!

Since 2010, Jerome Cole has been an advisor, coach and mentor to my kids as they go through their college search process. He uses a structured approach that parents and kids participate in including meetings, phone calls, e-mails and other resources. He is knowledgeable about a range of issues and is very accessible to answer questions. Jerome knows how to respond to kids and their concerns. He speaks their language!
