Introduction: Piano Lessons for Children and Adults I am a jazz pianist, composer and classically trained singer and have been teaching piano for over 20 years. I studied Composition with Alan Mandel, Voice with Anastasio (A.U.) and Elizabeth Vrenios and Jazz piano with Jon Ozment (U. of M; A.U. George Mason...) The age span of the students I teach runs from 4 or 5 to adult. I try hard to make the lessons fun as well as educational with activities like music picture riddles and music hangman. I do my best to tailor the lessons to the interests and personality of the student. All of my students learn the basic piano skills of finger technique and music reading, while some enjoy creative projects as well: many students learn to compose and notate their own pieces with the help of composing apps or to improvise with Jazz tunes. I use sight reading materials in both traditional and digital form which help a lot with music reading skills and can be fun as well. Note - Due to the Corona Virus epidemic I am teaching exclusively via Zoom at this time but hope to return to a hybrid of in person and online lessons when appropriate. In the meantime I use programs and equipment which allow for those with electric keyboards to utilize remote playing (I play on my keyboard and it also plays on your keyboard, you play on your keyboard and it also plays on my keyboard; midi and audio recordings which can be slowed down for easier comprehension as well as old fashioned sheet music to create a learning situation that is at least as effective as in person lessons. Please contact me about scheduling a trial lesson. I am happy to provide references and pricing upon request. David Striar PS I have been told I have the patience of Job which probably helps but the truth is I love my students and really like teaching. I think the combination of playfulness, creativity and purpose I bring to the lessons makes them enjoyable for both the kids and the adults I work with. I am especially good with creative projects (composition; song-writing); jazz theory and digital music applications.

David is a very nice person, he is always patient with me in our lessons. Even if I am struggling with a piece or part of a song he will always support and help me. He also pushes me to get better at the Piano, if it wasn’t for David I probably would have given up on it years ago.

David has a very special way teaching children. He is super funny, extremely patient, and meets my children where they are to inspire them to learn. My kids have learned a lot and look forward to their lessons with David.

David is great with my kid and has a lot of patience. Even in the virtual setting, my child is very engaged during the lessons. It's not all about being able to play piano - yes, he does that, too - but he also makes a point to getting to know my child. He comes up with different ways to make the virtual lessons work by using games, apps, midi connection to ePiano, etc.

David is the kind of instructor I would select if I wanted my kid to love playing the piano. He approaches each kid as an individual that may have interests beyond classical. He focuses on love of music and musical expression beyond just the mechanics of technical execution. This is great if you want your kid to continue to love the piano over time!

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I charge $22.00 for a 15 minute lesson (4 and 5 year olds only); $45 for a half hour lesson; $65 for a 45 minute lesson. I require a 24 hour minimum cancellation notice so that I can use the time for make-ups.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I schedule a free initial meeting/lesson in which we may do some things with the keyboard especially if the student has had lessons before so that I can gauge their level and observe their technique. Mainly though we will talk generally about how the online lessons work, how to set up for the lessons; the kind of things we will be doing in the lessons, the musical interests and goals of the student, practice expectations and the like. I will also introduce some of the software programs I use with my students including and especially the internet Midi program I mentioned in my profile which allows student and teacher to play each others electric keyboards remotely. If the prospective student is a child I may present a music riddle for them to solve!

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

As mentioned in my profile I have studied with various music professionals including professors at local universities and have been teaching piano for 40 years.
