We own a real estate company and are so satisfied that we left Eds guys a tremendous tip because of their effort in making sure that the property was in the best presentable position for us to list it on the market. There were several phases to this project which concluded the the trash removal and cleansing/\cleaning of the building. First we had EBRR handle some mold that needed to be removed and treatment of the air for the previous tenant. Then it was the outside area that needed to be cleaned of all the debris. We couldn't believe the short time span which all this work was completed and the price was not able to beaten by any other contractors in the area. Mr.Ed goes and does anything to make sure the client is satisfied being us! Always answers the phone and couldn't ask for more pleasurable experience.

Troy was very prompt and quick to assess the problem with my air conditioner unit. It had frozen up the day before but then it came back on. He thoroughly inspected everything and determined it simply needed cleaning. Although its quite an old unit he assured me everything was fine and it didn't need to be replaced. A very competent and honest professional! Highly recommended.

It was a positive experience from beginning to end. Andrew Hammett said he would come out on the very day we called him--which he did. to do a diagnostic on our air conditioner. Within a matter of minutes, he told my husband what the problem was. He had the part on his truck and was able to fix the problem. He was able to replace the part in no time. The price was reasonable. Andrew was personable and professional. We would hire him again without hesitation. Anne and Jim McMenamin Davidsonville, MD

Fast, friendly, courteous service. I love Kevin! He's a contractor that feels like a friend. He was able to come on short notice, and diagnosed the problem with my air conditioner, before even seeing it. He was done within 30 minutes. He's, now, my new HVAC guy. Thanks Kevin. Your time and your expertise was greatly appreciated.

I used Ray for the first time to perform a maintenance service on my HVAC system which also includes a whole house humidifier and an air purifying system. He responded immediately to my call, was courteous, pleasant and professional. Ray demonstrated a great deal of skill and knowledge. He did a thorough inspection and explained the work he was doing. He also took the time to vacuum out the unit which had begun to accumulate dust. His charge for the service was reasonable. I also appreciated the fact that he was respectful of my time and arrived promptly as scheduled. That meant that I didn't have to wait around for the standard 2 hour window. I plan to call on Ray from now on to service my HVAC unit and I highly recommend him.

Best Company Ever!!! I contacted MJ Home Services originally to have my vents cleaned. John & his team responded immediately and found that I had some mold issues as my home is 62 years old. They completely cleaned my whole system and treated my basement to eradicate the mold. John also did several other jobs for me in addition to the mold treatment including, carpet cleaning, installing a French drain, and many other small jobs which greatly improved our home. John is the Master & is very knowledgeable. He and his team were prompt, courteous, professional, reliable, affordable, and very pleasant to work with throughout the entire process. I highly recommend MJ Services for any air duct or carpet cleaning or any of the services they provide. You will be very happy using this company, which is very rare these days!!! I would give them 10 stars if I could!!!

Frank from Pure Air responded next-day and gave us excellent and thorough service. We're new homeowners so we didn't know what to expect when our AC blew warm air. The prices were extremely fair (we comparison shopped online just in case and his pricing was spot-on) and he was very transparent about the work he was doing and why. He was also very professional and didn't pressure us. We will definitely be contacting Pure Air for our HVAC needs in the future.

My 2.5 story house dates from 1920 or so and has steam heat with radiators. The lack of existing duct work presented a real challenge for Hughes Mechanical, but they totally rose to the occasion. My initial consultant, Brad, did not appear fazed by the job at all and immediately suggested a high-velocity system for the top two floors, a conventional system for the first floor, and a mini-split for the one room off the back of the house built on a cement slab and thus unreachable by the other two systems. The crew that came in, Billy, Eddie, Matt, Brian and others, was totally professional, did exactly what they said they would do, cleaned up after themselves, accommodated my schedule, and were a pleasure to have around for a couple of weeks. This was the only company from which I obtained an estimate that suggested anything other than a conventional system, which would have involved boxing in ducts all over the place. There is only one small place where Hughes was forced to put a duct outside the walls. As a bonus, Hughes gave me two new thermostats to control both the heat and air. I am super pleased with my air conditioning job!

I needed someone to fix my Central Air unit on an extremely hot July day. I didn't think I would have any luck getting someone to come help me on the same. I hadn't used Thumbtack before but I am so glad I did. Kurt responded to my request quickly and was in had my unit fixed a couple of hours later. I highly recommend his company.

Eric was professional, friendly, on time and did a great job. He removed a wall unit air conditioner which he then needed to patch up the hole in the wall. He was able to get the siding to match and did a good job at dry wall. He also replaced our beam in between our two garage doors. I would recommend Eric for your home projects.

Excellent experience with One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning, one of Modern Mechanical's new companies. I called them on a particularly hot day this past summer and they were able to come straight out and fix my problem quickly and efficiently. No other HVAC company over the years has taken the time to explain the steps to me like Darren did. He involved me in the process from the moment he arrived. I can see why this company continually receives the "Best Of" awards in HVAC and Plumbing.

We've had our air conditioner serviced in the past 20+ years and no one ever fixed the problem we complained about. That is the vent not cooling our bedroom for my husband's COPD problem. Chesapeake Heating & Cooling solved the problem immediately and will surely call them for any future service calls. He was professional, polite and knew what he was doing compared to all the others we had in the past. Thanks and now my husband can sleep better due to the solved problem. Mrs. Myers

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
