My 15 year old daughter has being "playing" with a guitar for a couple of years now. I wanted her to get some proper training and Steve is an inspiration for her. His love of guitar and music is infectious and he knows how to teach the technical side, without it becoming boring. I also grabbed my guitar and joined in. We have now set up a weekly schedule and I hope to be the dad of a serious rock and roll guitarist in the near future. Thanks Steve!

Scott Schoem is a wonderful piano teacher who has worked with my children for four years. He is a talented musician himself who shares his skills and love of music with his students. Scott always is upbeat, patient and encouraging. My children enjoy their lessons with Scott and have learned to play piano well under his tutelage. He varies the songs they learn from classic pieces to jazz, rags and blues to holiday music to keep practice time fresh and fun.

Sadie is an excellent piano teacher. She taught my 3 girls for about a year and they absolutely loved her and learning to play the piano. She clearly loves teaching and is a passionate musician. She was able to inspire my girls as well as adapt to each of their styles to optimize their learning. We were so sad that she moved, but DC is getting a fantastic musician and a wonderful piano teacher.

Theresa Daly and her crew was put in charge of an almost impossible task - creating a unique, fun and affordable birthday party for a 13 year old budding artist. Theresa coordinated the entire event (a painting party). Everything from artist selection and food and beverages to maintaining a fun yet controlled atmosphere! She did such a wonderful job that not only were the birthday girl and her friends raving at the end of the party, but the mother and other family members we're thrilled. Needless to say, so was I.

Ron is well versed in music theory, rhythms, chords, scales, and basically all musical concepts for beginners, mid-level, or even professional level piano players. He relates in a "down to earth" manner, that is easy to understand and apply ! Keep up the good work Ron !! I even received personal calls, to help me improve my playing. I was an absolute beginner, when Ron started helping me, and I didn't know what a chord or scale was, and now, for the last 4 years, I have been the "House" pianist, at a luxury hotel, playing for weddings, corporate events, etc.!! (I would play for FREE, but the hotel is paying me to play...I can't believe it !! I am learning everyday, and I thank Ron, for giving me the foundation tools, needed to learn, to play the piano.

I have been to a number of concerts given by Pavel Urkiza and I've thoroughly enjoyed all of them. He is a multi-talented artist who not only writes and sings his own compositions, but arranges not only his own but also those of others. Urkiza's music is very vibrant and interesting, but what I love is that even at its most vibrant and complex, deep in the center of his songs, there is a quiet and peaceful core. How does he do that? Only he knows, but when I shared this observation with him, he grabbed me by the shoulders and exclaimed, "You got it! You heard the peace. Bravo."

I requested him for a youth joy night at my church in April. When I tell you he showed up and showed out, he showed up and definitely showed out. My youth are still talking about his ministry, which makes me excited to see them so enthusiastic about the gospel. I wholeheartedly recommend this brother for any of your musical needs.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
