Response time was quick and efficient. Had this crew out to power wash house and clean the garage. The previous contractors left my garage a complete waste dump for out kitchen remodel and Eds team came in and cleaned it up without hesitation.

On time and let me know when they were on the way. One of my clothing boxes broke (I forgot to tape the bottom of the box) and he used his own contractor bags to help me out.

I had a 7 draw dresser put together and a wall shelf to hold cable box under a TV. Trenton arrived on time, worked quickly and without my input. I explained what was requested ... And next thing I know he was done. Trenton was awesome and very professional. I plan to hire Trenton to put 2 televisions on the wall. Trenton prices are very reasonable.

Tim was able to meet me sooner than I expected. After a long day of painting, he came to hang a framed poster on my wall. He even brought all of the required materials needed to hang a frame which was great because we couldn’t find our kit. He had everything hung straight without any marks but a few small smudges on the wall in under 15 minutes. Polite, prepared, and prompt. I will certainly call atom again for other projects.

Really solid first experience with Gifted Hands. They repaired a 6 foot by 2 foot piece of dry wall on my ceiling and some adjacent wall areas caused by a roof leak. Their work was quick and well done, the wall and ceiling look great now. Looking forward to working with them again.

Stavo did an excellent job repairing a wall at my apartment. He was very responsive, came at a time that was convenient for me, provided all materials, and even came back a second day free of charge to do final touch-ups once the spackling had dried from the prior day. Great experience.

Delightful Contracting was truly a delight to work with. Ryan was the first of three contractors we met with for our kitchen remodel project—a project we waited nine years for! We told him our vision, and he was very upfront about what was realistic and what wasn’t. He even told us things to look out for when reviewing competitor proposals. By the time he left, we knew he was the one for the job. One contractor came in much too high, and commented our budget would only get us materials. The other contractor was over and hour late for our appointment (he ran out of gas), and extremely slow to respond. That didn’t give us a good feeling. Needless to say, Ryan was awarded the contract! He worked with us on pricing, and gave us the most bang for our buck. He went above and beyond his contractual responsibilities. For example, I couldn’t get off work for a delivery. Ryan was out picking up supplies, but left to meet the vendor at my house for the delivery. On another occasion, he cut down a non-standard door to save us the cost of a special order. Ryan has held our hand during the entire process. He suggested finishes, paint color, accessories, and made himself available via phone for any questions that came up along the way. We felt like we were hiring a trusted friend. For this reason, we had no reservations providing Ryan with keys to our home so he could come and go freely during the day. We are beyond pleased with our remodel project, and highly recommend Ryan based on price, attention to detail, and professionalism.

Erick and his team did a kitchen remodeling project for me in Fairfax. They installed recessed lighting, removed the bulkhead moved the air vent that was in the bulkhead, installed the cabinets and backsplash, installed new appliance and a new sink, faucet and installed new breakers for the new appliances. They did everything in a professional, neat and timely manner. He even came on a Sunday to accommodate my tenants schedule. My tenants told me that they have never seen any contractors who left the house clean and tidy at the end of each day. He was a true pleasure to work with and made the project easy even though I live 800 miles away. I highly recommend Ordonez cleaning service. He has earned my trust and I told him that I will count on him to take care of my house. In Virgina.

We worked with him to convert a garage into a bedroom and were continually impressed by his honesty, punctuality, diligence and professionalism. He takes pride in his work and work ethic, and it is a true pleasure to do business with him.

Jorge did an awesome job on my staining and painting project. Bonus points for working around the other contractors who were putting in pavers and fixing concrete work on site. I feel I got an excellent price. And finally I was impressed that he kept me updated. He did everything right. Great job. Will call again.

Lee showed up roughly 10 mins before the scheduled time and we discussed options with my curtains. I messed up one of the windows but Lee was able to fix it and throughout the entire process explained what he was doing, or his thoughts on the best way to correct my error! He completed 5 windows, used some of his screws (because the one I have was poorly made and too short) for a very reasonable price! I even asked about wall mounting my tv in the near future and he gave me great options. Will definitely use his services again! Thank you, Lee!

Brian was absolutely fantastic. He came out quickly to quote and held to that quote, which is not always common with contractors. He showed up when he said he would and did an excellent job with taking out some clothes line poles and putting in a proper dryer vent outside the house. We have him quoting up other work and he's our guy from here on out. I think it's telling when someone is booked several months out already. It shows he's consistent in his work with all of his clients, his prices are fair and he's punctual. Brian is honestly everything you'd want from a contractor. If you're thinking of getting something done, save yourself the trouble and just hire him already.

I contacted Christian on Friday, then he was able to come on Saturday for a free estimate. He explained everything he would have to do, and then came and completed all the work on Monday. He and his assistant did a great job. I would use this contractor again.

My experience with Noel is that he sets the standard for what you could hope for from a painting contractor. When he came by our house for a consultation he thoroughly explained everything that he would do and made suggestions to ensure that we got the highest quality products available. When he arrived to do the painting, he helped me prepare the space and went about his business as a true professional. He communicated with me respectfully throughout the day, and I never had the slightest concern that he understood what we wanted and would make it happen. In the end, my partner and I were beyond impressed with his work. He even contacted me the next day to thank me and wish us well. I will undoubtedly contact him for any painting work in the future, and I recommend you do the same.

Nothing but good things to say about Balco Landscapes! I had just completed two projects with separate big name contractors and the experiences were both horrible. Had I not been on home on several occasions, the work these other contractors did would have been done wrong and not to spec. So I was a bit uneasy when I realized that due to my work schedule, I would not be home for the entirety of the landscaping project with Balco. But, Balco Landscapes showed up every day, on time, and did the work they quoted. The work itself is stunning! The installed 2 flagstone patios over concrete base, a separate stacked stone retaining wall, and landscaped a garden bed horribly overgrown with weeds and planted agreed upon plants. Also planted a dogwood in the very back of the yard. Balco also pulled the necessary permits from Baltimore City (which in itself is no easy task). They quoted 2 weeks to complete the project and they finished in 1 week and 3 days. Harry and his team were nothing but courteous and professional from the moment they showed up in person to discuss design and requirements, through to the project's completion. The morning after the day in which it looked as though everything had been completed, I spoke directly with Harry to make sure they were done so I could finalize payment. Indeed they were... but Harry was already on his way to my house to shore up a joint line in one of the patios that "he wasn't happy with." I didn't ask him to do it... i didn't even recognize what he was talking about... but he came out on his own to take care of it. That is owning your workmanship. And that is respect for the homeowner. This is how working with contractors should always be!! They are already my decided choice for some additional work I'll have done in a few months. If you have landscaping needs, you'll be in good hands with Balco! A+ across the board.

Arnold stepped in when my original contractor fell ill right after he demo'd the kitchen. Arnold did a fantastic job with a complete kitchen rehab and installing a new bathroom. It was a big project, which included installing heated floors, new hardwood floors, a new staircase, detailed cabinet assembly, recessed lighting, painting, cabinet lighting, installing new electric and much more. I cannot believe how lucky I was to hook up with Arnold. I 200% recommend him. He was extremely reliable, and he always answered my calls, texts and emails. He is a good person, and I now consider him a friend. Thank you Arnold and your team for a job well done. I love my kitchen and bathroom.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
