Michael responded quickly to my call and was here when he said he would be. He and his brother did a good job taking care of the lawn. I would recommend him. I had other landscapers call me but not show up when they said they would or not show at all.

We hired Neal for some leaf and lawn cleanup this fall. He showed up promptly, provided a fair estimate and delivered a fine job. We would hire him again.

First of all, I have had far more success with contractors on Thumbtack than with either Home Advisor or Angie’s List – and this has been in three different states: VA, MA, NH. I submitted a request to Thumbtack on a Monday for someone to mow my very large front lawn within the week (by Saturday morning at the latest). Got what seemed like automated, property-sight-unseen quotes from three different companies – for $35, $40, and $75. I figured that once any of them actually saw the property, the minimum quote would be closer to $75 or more, but I chose to contact the $40 guys because I had read very good reviews of them. They responded promptly (via Thumbtack’s online messaging system) and told me (after I’d asked) that their price might be adjusted up depending upon the size of the lawn once they saw it (no surprise to me there), and that they would visit my property on Thursday, and call me with a new quote. I was fine with this. Meanwhile, later in the day on Monday, I heard via Thumbtack’s online messaging system from Jerry of J&M – which was NOT one of the original three companies that had auto-responded to me. Jerry requested my phone number, we talked that evening, and he told me he could be at my property Friday, firm up a quote, and do the job that day (Friday) if I wanted and was agreeable with his quote. Well Thursday comes and goes, and I never hear from the grass guys I had originally contacted (and I STILL haven’t heard back from them, a month later). Friday comes, and Jerry messages me before noon as to when he’ll be at my property (within the hour). Then he calls me with the quote ($75), and I give him the job, and he does it. He even tried to send me photos of the job he did, but ran into technical difficulties. BTW, Jerry had initially told me that he “couldn’t imagine” he’d be charging me more than $50 to do my front lawn – but this was sight unseen, and to be fair, the home sits on 1.55 acres (which he didn’t know), and the largest portion of it is the lawn in front of the house. My husband has said that if HE were to mow the lawn, we’d have to buy him a riding lawn mower - and we’ve joked about getting a golf cart just to ride down the long driveway to the mailbox, so we do feel that Jerry’s adjusted quote of $75 was fair. Jerry was responsive, prompt, the only one who actually followed through on what he’d said he’d do, fairly priced, and did a good job. What more can you ask for? I recommend him, and would absolutely hire him again.

I had Affordable Services come out to perform a spring clean up on my lawn. They were very efficient and had an attention to detail, cleaning out all the beds, picking up the various sticks and branches from the winter storms and picked up all the leaves that I missed in the fall. Then they hauled it all away. The yard looks great and is ready for the summer.

I am out of state, but have a house in Cape Elizabeth. I needed someone to do a full cleanup on the property and this be handled without me being there. Troy's team did a nice job and covered all the bases. I thought the price was a little high, but it was comparable with another bid. Since then Troy has taken over my lawn mowing at a very reasonable rate and also cleaned out the drainage ditch very nicely. All in all, very pleased!

I recently asked Al to plow my Mothers driveway. My Mother is handicapped and has health aids who come daily. She started having radiation treatments every morning and has to be out by a certain time. He has been early every time! Making sure the driveway is clear, her wheelchair ramp is clear, salted and sanded so no one falls. I live too far away and it’s such a relief to know that she is taken care of and she doesn’t have to worry about being able to get out when we have a snow storm. It is challenging enough. Thank you so much Al! Your service is impeccable and very much appreciated! Beth Davis, Roxbury, ME

The work that these young men do is exception. They are extremely knowledgeable and managed to not only design and install a beautiful garden, but also set up a system of soaker hoses and timers to get it watered everyday. That alleviated my worries about the garden not getting enough water. While they were at my house, they worked extremely hard, straight through the entire day of extreme heat. The finished product was so beautiful and made my house shine. In the beginning, I was told that they would be inexpensive and that definitely came true. I have hired them to maintain the garden every other week, weed and trim back the flowers and bushes, as well as mow my lawn. They do tremendous work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.
