Hired Mecias Granite for granite counter top installation in my kitchen: Around 50 square feet of granite including a 9 foot bar with a 8 inch over hang and there was one L turn in the counter tops. It also included two small detailed lay down areas to custom match a triangle shaped pantry top. They did the entire kitchen with only one seam and laid out the stone so that the area with the most variation was in the most prominent spot. We told them we were in a hurry so they met us at the granite depot where we were able to walk through the wide selection and pick out what we wanted. We picked and paid the upfront half on Monday morning and they were installing our counters Tuesday afternoon. I was beyond impressed. They even left a small left over granite piece that we could use as a matching cutting board or as a lazy susan. I am planning to have them come back for my bathroom countertops when we are ready.

Hired on Thumbtack

Our six week ordeal began on April Fool’s day. I found Mecias Granite through Thumbtack and was told that he did both granite and cabinetry. They came out promptly to give me an estimate for the job and was told the job would take approximately 3 weeks. He brought Ortega Custom Cabinets to handle the cabinet work. I was asked to pay 50% upfront and would pay the remaining balance when the job was completed. Once my kitchen was demo’d we picked our colors and granite style. At this point we were expecting to have the job completed by the end of April. Several days later we made a change to the style of doors we wanted and thought it was still early in the process where this would not be an issue. Well it was! On two occasions we were asked to drive to Tampa to verify colors and granite. We live over an hour away from their “showroom” and on both visits neither one of them was there. The second time was on a Sunday and they were completely closed. Ortega wound up sending his son, who knew nothing about the job, to meet us. We really began to feel like our job was not important to them. To this point we were still under the impression that the job was on schedule. No one ever contacted me to give me updates, as a matter of fact I had to initiate dialogue only to get vague answers. Most of my “communication” was with Ortega as Mecias was not “involved” in the cabinet aspect. Hello! I hired you, you brought Ortega, it was your responsibility to ensure the overall job went well. Three weeks pass and I call again to find out when my cabinets were going to be installed. This is when I am told that because I made changes the door manufacturer pushed my order back. I was told I needed to understand that it was a small operation and now I had to wait. Where is the ability to deal with change? Why wasn’t I told until the last minute that when I made the change that the job would be delayed? So I asked why don’t you at least come and install the cabinets so the granite can be placed? I was told that jobs were already scheduled and how fair would it be to reschedule those jobs for mine. REALLY! I’m only your customer! They finally showed up last week to install the cabinets and was told that by Friday the doors would be installed. This is when I scheduled the granite to be placed and my refinance appraisal to be done since they could not do one without a kitchen. I sent text messages to both Mecias and Ortega to ensure that they arrived early as the appraisal was scheduled for 4pm that afternoon. Mecias arrived early in the morning and I asked him if he had coordinated with Ortega his arrival. He told me no. At 1030 that morning I received a call from Ortega stating that the doors didn’t arrive until Tuesday and since it rained all day Wednesday the doors would not be ready for Friday. I am furious at this point as I took time off from work and scheduled my appraisal that was already delayed due to this job and you wait until the day you are supposed to arrive to notify me that you aren’t coming. I bring this to Mecias, who is the “master contractor” for the job and he tells me that Ortega mentioned that to him. So they both knew on Wednesday that Friday was not a good day and told me nothing! Great customer service! It gets better. Mecias “finishes” the granite. He cuts wholes for my new faucets and then proceeds to tell me that he doesn’t do installation of faucets or completes the sinks. He also asked for payment for his portion of the work as “his job” was done. My mistake on that, I should have withheld payment until the entire job was complete. The doors were installed on 5/10 and they had to come out the next day because one of the doors was wrong. Additionally, when the new cabinets were installed the PVC pipes had to be cut in order fit the under mount sinks. The jobs quote was almost 10K, you would think this included all the finishing work. I now have to hire a plumber to complete the job. I am TOTALLY disappointed at how the job turned out. I have several takeaways from this whole experience. First, get a written estimate. I would probably not have hired them had I had one. Second, Mecias was the one I hired, it was his responsibility to coordinate with Ortega. He failed in that aspect and appeared more concerned with getting paid for “his job” than for my job. Finally, the total lack of communication underlies my dissatisfaction. We initially had plans to talk to him regarding bathroom remodels but at this point that is out of the question. Although on the surface the job looks good the road to get here was more than unpleasant and would not recommend this contractor to any of my friends. I guess the joke was on me!
Mecias Granite Inc.'s reply
Mecias granite assume responsibility because it was the one who recommend Ortega gabinet but mecias granite just wants to clarify that we do not make gabinet that we do only granite and always we inform the customer that we do not plumbing or electricity, mecias granite only do a favor to recommend Ortega gabinet and in many cases the favors are expensive. Thank you ariel.the company president
