I called NWT first thing in the morning on the 6th of Sept. Not only was our hot water out so was the power that day. Nick answered the phone and after letting him know the problem said he could come that day after noon. He and his apprentice fix the water heater in about 20 minutes. His charge was reasonable and he is very pleasant young man. Will keep his number for future work. Thanks for the lead. Karen

Steve installed a hot water recirculation pump to our water heater and we now no longer have to wait a few minutes for hot water. In fact, it's practically instantaneous! Only one minor issue with one faucet that I could live with but have to see if the wife can also.

Mark called when he said he would, and then was at my house within a few minutes. A free estimate was important to me, because I had no idea what I was looking at. The problem ended up being something that I could fix on my own. Mark diagnosed the issue for me within 15 minutes and didn't charge me anything. He also provided insight into a few other things that I should keep an eye on going forward. I'll definitely be calling him again! Very grateful for his help!

My daughter's hot water heater was beyond repair. She lives in mid-town Detroit. I put this request out on Thumbtack and Tony responded in less than 5 minutes. He was in the middle of another job but responded promptly...answered my questions...spoke with my daughter. Gave a very fair price...arrived at her home at stated time...assessed the situation...went to purchase and pick up water heater. He and his partner completed the job and hauled away the hold one. Prompt and professional...definitely would recommend. From contact to completion 6 hours...great job! Thank you.

Paul was great! He was at the location at the time he said he would be and did a great job installing the water heater. I compared the other people that Thumbtack recommended and this was the BEST DEAL AROUND. I would definitely hire this group again in the future.

I had a shower that was dripping, Adam came out within a couple of hours and diagnosed the problem, and left to go pick up the part. After a couple of hours he was back and installed the part. I told him about a lack of water pressure in my kitchen faucet. He took the nozzle off of the fixture and removed a little part designed to conserve water, put it back together and the water pressure is where it should be (No extra charge). I am pleased.

Joe was hired to convert an electric tank hot water heater to a gas tankless unit. In record-breaking time he was able to achieve getting a hard to find unit and he had to immediately shipped in by his wholesaler. He worked on Sunday which is unusual in his industry to make the job happen in a very fast pace. I would recommend Joe to anyone that needs plumbing regardless of how small or large the job may be without reservation. He is also not afraid of a challenge or something that may cause other plumbers to have second thoughts.

I am a first time thumbtack user and will be a repeat user. I made a request for a plumber to contact me regarding frozen pipes in a crawl space...house has boiler baseboard heating, so as you can imagine this meant no heat or water until it was thawed. I used a torpedo heater in the crawl to thaw the plumbing out and ended up with a muddy river in the crawl. Robert Burns was the 1st person to respond with a very reasonable rate which I knew would probably be adjusted after seeing the job. Mr. Burns responded in a timely manner and was more than fair on the quote to pump out over a foot of water out of about a 600 sq ft crawlspace and then go down and make repairs to burst pipes in a cold, wet and muddy crawlspace. The job turned out to be more than we expected, as when we got the plumbing going we still had to contend with the boiler, but he stayed at it until he got it up and running and had our water and heat back on. I completely agree with the other reviews in that he is a very hard worker and you more than get your moneys worth...not very many would do this and if they did they would charge an arm and a leg. Thank you Robert for the hard work.

Josh and his assistant installed a power vent water heater and also fixed some leaking faucets in my home. Josh was prompt, even providing us with updates as to his expected arrival time. Work was done in a professional manner, Josh is extremely polite and he made sure everything was clean and picked up on completion of the work. I would definitely use him again for any future plumbing needs. I feel his charges were reasonable, too. All in all, this was a great experience.

I actually had George bid a paint job. But ended up using him for multiple things.... installed a water heater, called in a pinch for a furnace repair! Of all the contractors I've hired he was the easiest and most accommodating to work with. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable and experienced. Best part was my husband and I both trusted him and he was extremely fair with his price. Will definitely use him again and again! Kym C

Ian was absolutely professional and courteous, and I am very thankful that I found him to install a new hot water heater for my home. He provided a fair price, with manufacturer and labor warranties, took care of the install and disposal of my old unit successfully. No muss, no fuss. Ian also looked at my furnace/AC unit while he was doing the install as there were some issues there. He gave me an honest recommendation and helped me understand the level of urgency that the issue needed to be addressed in. As a single mom, raising 3 sons, value is important. Equally, trust is important, I am pleased with the work that Ian provided and would recommend him to anyone looking for the same type of service.

Jeff came out quickly to install my new water heater. After he left the unit stopped working, he came back that evening and got everything up and running in no time. I always worry what kind of service you will get after you pay the contractor, this was not an issue with Jeff. He showed the same urgency to get it done right at no extra charge. Thanks!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.

How much does it cost to install a tankless hot water heater?

Tankless water heaters usually cost more to install than traditional tanks, because many homes need to be retrofitted to accommodate the new system. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $150 and $1,200, and tankless natural gas water heaters retail between $200 and $1,300 on average. The lower prices ($150-$250) are generally for point-of-use tankless heaters that can be installed to boost hot water in high-demand areas such as the bathroom or kitchen sink. Tankless water heaters designed to heat whole homes usually start under $300 at the low end and go up to $1,400 or more. Pricing for whole-home varies with the heater’s technology and features. Nationally, standard water heater installation costs average $360-$780, but tankless water heater installation costs may range from $400 to $1,000, depending on the work needed. Some perks of tankless water heaters are that they have nearly double the life expectancy of traditional water heaters and are generally more cost-efficient. Homeowners may be able to save $100 or more per year on their utility bills with an Energy Star approved tankless heater, depending on how much hot water they use.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.
