I recently purchased a 100 year old home in need of major electrical upgrades. New to the area, I had gotten several quotes from several reputable electricians, but Nick stood out. Price and Services offered were hard to beat. Increase AMP's to the house, rewire entire garage, replace service panel, the list goes on. I consider myself handy, but Nick puts my knowledge and handy work to shame. He offers much more than just electrical services, garage door motor install, TV's "professionally" hung, 220v outlets run, kitchen & bath and more. I would reccomend him and his team for just about any project.

Mom had several junk trees growing between a wooden fence and the neighbor's chain link fence and they were also growing in the power lines. Needless to say, Detroit Edison did the least amount of work possible. I met with Mr. Gray and was quoted a price and the job was done the next day. Everything was cleaned up in Mom's and the neighbor's yard and this company even went a step further and took down the wooden fence after Mom asked them to. Recommend highly!

Jim and his crew are very professional and provide quality work. I had my garage and basement wired by Jim, and it turned out wonderful... Also very happy with the trim work, and bonus room they built in my basement. Couldn't be happier, and would highly recommend to my own family and friends. A++

John was able to do a quick turn around job to help me get our house ready for a graduation party. He painted our garage and window trims in our house as well as repair and paint our, weather damaged, front door. He was a real pleasure to work with!

I have had Justin work on many different projects throughout my home and would hire him again in a second. He has re-roofed our home, installed cabinets and crown molding in our kitchen, and updated the electrical panel in our home with added power to our garage. Very professional and excellent work.

We had a complex job, with our porch leaking through the wall of our garage requiring multiple solutions both inside and outside. Working with Vini was fantastic, he thoroughly investigated the issue and worked collaboratively with both myself and other contractors to develop an effective, solid solution. As well as responding to challenges found along the way during excavation. The quote provided was very detailed and comprehensive, and was adhered to. We are happy with the result and to this point have had no further issues with water penetration. I would recommend Vini and his company to anyone.

Costa Pro LLC is a top notch company. The wind storm in march did a number on my roof, not only did they strip the old roof off, they replaced my fascia and replaced the roof, all in one day. I got quotes from other companies, but Costa Pro had the most affordable prices and a warranty that lasts double everyone else's. The exterior of my home was in need of repair as well, and Costa Pro LLC was up for the task. They put in new vinyl soffits, and the opening around my garage door. Costa Pro also painted the exterior and trim of my house, and replaced my leaking gutters. My house went from the worst on my street, to the best. I have gotten nothing but compliments from all my neighbors. I can't thank Will and everyone else at Costa Pro LLC enough for everything they did for me and my family. I strongly recommend Costa Pro LLC.

We tried four different people to get our garage repaired. We took business cards, friend of friend, and Craigslist and could not get past the first phone call or text message. J&L promptly answered our query, set up a time for an estimate and bid the job. They were communicative, courteous, kept the job site clean and were very interested in keeping us informed of the status. I would use them again for similar jobs. Thanks guys.

My husband and I hired George and his company to paint our farmhouse in 2010. The original farmhouse was built in 1900, the large addition was added in 1999. It was an extensive job consisting of scraping and sanding the existing paint, repair of rotting wood, priming and painting. George showed up on time every day with his crew, ready to work. We hired George and Company the following year to paint the garage/carriage house. It was the same thorough job with the same work ethic. He also painted the old granary shed and play shed on our property. In 2013 he power washed and stained the 5 decks/porches at the farmhouse. George made it a point to bring to our attention items that could be potential problems with the house. He would repair those items for us during the painting process, he also corrected some items on his own. His work crew was polite and they prepped the area prior to painting so there was not a mess. Because this was all outside work, George watched the forecast and would tell me what days they would be working. If it was a rainy week, they would work on the weekend so the job could be completed in a timely manner.

This company surprised me and let me know what a good contractor is. They remodeled my bathroom, gave me updates through text everyday which was very suprising, gave me one price which included everything and didn't ask for more money every 5mins and the work was exceptional. I have referred all my friends and family and they have not disappointed.

Staggers construction did a great job for us. We had several concrete companies out and they were the only one willing to tackle the job we had for a fair price. Ted was always keeping us informed of times he would be on the job and what would be done. He also started and completed the entire job in a timely manner. We would recommend giving them a call for your concrete, decking or any job around your home.

Zemo painting did such a wonderful job in my garage, by doing epoxy. I couldn’t believe how they were able to get out all the cracks in my cement and how fast they were able to do it. My garage looks brand new. I recommend epoxy flooring to everybody done by zemo painting.

Rafi came by really fast and gave us his professional opinion about our projects. He spent time with us talking it through and he started the job the next day. In two days his crew finished and painted the garage, kitchen- hall way and nursery. Highly recommended. We will hire again for future projects.

Called Joe for some repair work around the rental before we vacated the premises. He fixed the garage door, a regular door whose jamb was broken, and did some electrical work on some lights that stopped working. He did a great job and charges were very reasonable. I'm keeping his card handy from now on.

We had Richard of Horn Construction come over for an estimate. Our job was to mud/tape/prime and paint drywall that we had installed in our garage. Not only was he prompt, but his estimate was very fair. We were impressed that he started the very next Monday on our job. Richard and his team are real pro's. He was able to completely hide our seams and finished the drywall like we never would have been able to. If you're looking for a contractor that has a fine attention to detail, I would not hesitate to recommend Horn Construction.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
