Landscape improvement 1. removed numerous dead trees, 2. shaped existing trees, 3. removed existing shrubs and installed new low maintenance shrubs, 4. advised/assisted in selection of block wall materials and installed two block walls with drain tile, 5. removed existing rocks and replaced after new weed block installed, 6. installed sprinkler system, 7. installed accent and walkway lighting,8. installed new edging, 9. consulted, advised and properly planned for asphalt driveway to be installed when ZLM work was completed, 10. cleaned and sealed aggregate walkways/patio/drive in front of garage, 11. cleaned and sealed block foundation, 12. committed to return to finish installation of plant material and rocks between block wall and asphalt driveway once completed. ZLM is one of the most professional, dependable, quality oriented companies with which we have worked. Zach Kneisler (owner) stayed in regular communication with us, is a perfectionist and demands the same from his crew. He remained flexible, open minded and pleasant when we made last-minute changes to our original plan. His goal is to completely satisfy and delight his customers and he left no stone unturned. To ensure proper drainage with our asphalt driveway, Zach returned this spring to consult with our asphalt paving company on drainage needs based on what he experienced when the block wall and drain tile was installed. Without hesitation we highly recommend ZLM Services, LLC.

Hector's expertise was extremely helpful when he first consulted with us about the job. He had great ideas that we would not have thought of on our own. We had some exposed aggregate decorative work done on our driveway and walkway to our front door. Hector suggested lights in the concrete along both and it looks incredible. Very happy with the results! Will be using his services again in the spring in the backyard!

Tom prepared and poured a foundation for a heavy duty basketball hoop. Dimensions were critical for structural integrity and relationship to driveway. He communicated very well to make sure I was getting what I wanted. The job ended up being more difficult than expected, but he stuck it out and did a great job. I would definitely consider him again for another project.

Pete and his crew were great to work with! They built a stamped concrete patio and driveway for me. They were early in getting it started and he and his crew worked long hours to complete the project ahead of schedule - they knew I was very eager to get it done! Pete was very responsive every time I had a question and was very helpful in giving me ideas on what to do since I had never had work like this done before. I would highly recommend Pete and his team!

Gamboas Construction, Inc. was persistent to follow up to get the job. The job was done in the general time frame that was promised. I was quoted poured steps at the back door area, but was told at the last minute while pouring they would be precast steps. They are OK, but not what I really wanted. The actual concrete pouring and finish look good. My fence gate was misaligned during the project and left for me to fix. I was a little disappointed with the clean up and leveling of the dirt along the driveway. Some forms along the sidewalk were left that I had to ask them to remove. The stakes used for those forms are still in the ground now. I will have to remove them myself. The aluminum trim on the rear door was left bent and not trimmed to fit the new back steps. It is just these little things that they do not seem to pay attention to the detail required to be a really good company. It is hard to find contractors today that meet my high quality standards. Having said all of this, they did a good job at a reasonable cost and would hire them again

I hired Curtis to do a brick patio jod for me. The quality of his workmanship was outstanding. The only downfall was the weather. His performance was wonderful. Very pleased.

I was looking for a small section of concrete driveway to be replaced for fear of damage being done to my garage foundation. Steve called me within an hour of my initial quote submission on Thumbtack, even though he was on vacation. When the driveway was clear of snow, he came right out to do a detailed quote. The first day the weather was good enough to allow the job, he was out here working on it. The finish quality is excellent and it was done in one day. My only regret is I couldn't afford to have the whole driveway done.

I have nothing but great things to say about working with Ruben's! They were on time, friendly and VERY HELPFUL. They moved my entire bedroom set (which is extremely heavy) down a flight of stairs, then moved them into my new house with a very icy driveway. They went out of their way to help me move a couch we couldn't get in the door ourselves - they did it in 5 minutes. I would highly recommend them to anyone in the metro Detroit area, you will not be disappointed!

This by far has been a wonderful experience! I am a board member in my subdivision in Grand Blanc, a mother and a wife. I am quite busy to do landscaping. Once I posted my needs for landscaping Jeremy contacted me and was out the next day to give me a quote. He took his time explaining the project to me and gave a very reasonable quote. The job was completed the next day as indicated. The workers were professional and the job was very satisfactory. I would highly recommend this company and plan to use this service for future projects. I also posted his company to our NextDoor neighborhood website. Great Job! Mrs. Todd

I worked in the construction industry for years, and dealt with a lot of subcontractors and Rey Concrete is among the best. He came out right away, gave me an estimate on the spot, did everything exactly as I asked, and when the permit was ready from the city, the Wednesday before Labor Day, he set the job up, came out on the following Tuesday, and got it done in one day. Rey’s guys were professional, and careful with my property, laying plywood on the grass to prevent yard damage, and doing their best to repair the grass at the edges of the new driveway. They also removed all the extra grass, dirt, and cleaned up the site. They came out today and finished the job by sawcutting the joints. I’m really happy I chose to hire Rey.

Everything went as promised. They were timely and did a very nice job. Needed a tear off and re-shingle on my garage. They were available and in contact all the way. I have found a few nails in my driveway, but other wise no complaints. Without the nails I would have rated the job as excellent.

I recently bought a house and both the driveway and garage needed considerable repair after having setteled a substantial amount. I received an estimate same day and the job was completed promptly and professionally. I would personally recommend this company as I was very impressed with both the job completed and the individuals with which I worked with.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time. When hiring a paving contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
  • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
  • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
  • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
  • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
  • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.
