Number one - they did a great job installing the fence. Number two - they were incredibly accommodating at working with my schedule. Number three - they even made a last minute change and were creative in handling it. Kyle and Rachel are at the top spot on my list for the next time I need some work done. A+ recommendation from me.

Called Philip regarding fence repair (had another thumbtack fence guy install fence last fall and was not done properly as fence was leaning after 5 months) Philip came out next day and gave quote and started on fence repair immediately after advising what the prior guy failed to do. He completed the job the next day. He also advised that screws should have been placed on fence- he went and bought supplies so I wound have correct equipment as well as placing correct gate hardware So far so good ..fence looks great Would recommend him

I contacted them to repair my fence. When Vincent was out to my house, he noticed the cracks in my driveway. Vincent was very friendly, prompt and courteous. The price for both jobs were very reasonable. I would definitely recommend and use them again.

Jim was fabulous. Not only did he do a great job installing our fence, he also added a new screen door and fenced in our deck. He was kind, considerate and very professional. A pleasure to have around. We have since recommended him to our friends in full confidence. Thank you!

Rodgers was an absolute pleasure to work with! He went above and beyond to accommodate my many (unusual) requests with very short notice. I was having a house warming party on a Saturday night, and he came late Friday night after driving home from a conference in Chicago to get started on my projects, and continued working all day Saturday up until a couple hours before the party. From perfectly hanging my wedding canvases in a beautiful wall gallery to assembling a bed to hanging a cool hammock swing and installing a light fixture in my basement, he truly exceeded my expectations. I was creating a bohemian chic lounge in my basement, and I love the way Rodgers hung the chain of the light fixture to fit the aesthetic. He is professinal, precise, personable and great at what he does. I highly recommend Rodgers for all your handyman needs! Try not to be a procrastinator like me and give him advanced notice to accommodate your requests within his schedule!! Thank you, Rodgers!!

Barry was great. Very professional and extremely knowledgeable. I had a complex situation with my fence needs due to some hilly areas, a tree in the way, and a sunken patio which made for some interesting challenges. Barry was honest, patient with me (first time homeowner), and did a beautiful job on our fence. He was flexible and thorough. I would recommend Barry to anyone needing a fence or even any handy work or other home projects!

Overall, great work by Amber Fence. They recently installed a gate across my driveway, and I'm very pleased with the results. Admittedly, the work wasn't completed quite as quickly as I would have hoped, but given the circumstances it's understandable. I was particularly impressed that they took the time to revisit and revise our original plan after realizing that it would have been a less-than-ideal solution for my situation.

Josh and Owen from W&W were of the utmost professional and punctual people I have worked with. They were very upfront from the beginning. The work was completed in one day, tearing down a garage, and installing a fence in its place. They were very accommodating the entire time with the different setbacks. The most impressive part, they stay until the job is done, this is not a crew that works 9-5 and then stops, they were there before 8 am and left at 1130 to ensure the job was completed. I would re-hire them without a doubt, and most likely will! I 100% recommend Josh and Owen from W&W Maintenance.

Darrell has done many projects in my home. Initially, I hired him for a kitchen remodel, in 2010. Since then he has done a bathroom, flooring, both laminate and ceramic, electrical, plumbing, door installations, both exterior and interior and fencing around my pool. In addition, I have had Darrel work on two investment properties that I am a part owner of. In those homes, he has repaired and installed hardwood flooring, removed walls, moved electrical, fixed heating and cooling systems and roof repairs. What I feel is most important with his work is that he is trustworthy and honest. I am, by nature, cautious about individuals working in my home, but I have no reservations having Darrell come into my home and work, when I am not home. I have referred him to many friends and they have not been disappointed. Overall, I have not found anything that Darrell can not handle. I have been happy with all of the work he has done.

Danny has done several projects for us, including pouring a concrete slab for a shed and installing a fence and gates. He has also done interior projects for us, like installing a ceiling-hung pot rack. Danny is super cooperative and willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done right. We are very happy the with the results!

Tim and his crew installed chain link fence. He was very easy to work with. I also had a driveway installed by HCI (stay far far away from them) and he was able to accommodate to changes in schedule. Would definitely use again. By the way Tim, sidewalk and approach still not poured.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
