What an awesome job The Kleaning People did! I just moved into a new home and the carpets were really dirty but Robert and Kiesha did an excellent job, concentrating on the heavy spots. Everything looks and smells great. They are very nice and also very professional. Looking to hire them again soon for additional rooms.

Frank is the kind of contractor you want to give unlimited stars for excellence in service. My A/C unit wasn't working. Frank diagnosed the problem quickly and went the extra mile to fix it. He's knowledgeable, fair and honest. A pleasure to have met and certainly someone I would give the highest recommendation and referral for anyone needing his services. He also specializes in window and door replacement. Give him a call. You won't regret it. Thanks Frank for restoring my faith in contractors. You're a good man. Even my most shyest catahoula rescue dog loved Frank! That's a first for her. I would definitely call on Frank in the future.

He took great time and consideration in listening to what we wanted and which options he could provide. We were in communication every step of the way. Mr. Morris completed 4 jobs for me covering a three month period. 1) Involved rennovating my enclosed back porch by putting in a ceiling, removed/replaced surrounding screens & door, removed/repaired wood frames, installed electric wiring & put in a ceiling fan/light for first time, painting of woodframes, sealing bottom base bricks, and fixing gutters. Excellent job. 2) Installed gutters on garage for rain off, re-roofed garage & installed ventilation at top of roof. Well done! 3) Installed gutter brackets, repaired damage wood, repaired & fixed front house gutters for rain off. 4) Re-balancing of garage beams and adjusted tracks of garage door to prevent jamming or inconsistency of door opening or closing. All jobs were pre-appraised, with an estimate delivered within several days. Mr. Morris was very professional , detailed & courteous in explaining each job, cost, and timeframes. He exceeded all my expectations, in quality, timeliness, & proficiency, completing each job ahead of schedule. He cleaned up each area after completion of job very well. Partial monies paid up front and balance of bill not due until I did a walk thru & stated satisfaction of work done. I have told Mr. Morris that I will be retaining his phone number in my directory for future home repairs and have no concerns about referring him to my neighbors because of his professionalism and the quality of his work.

P & G Contracting recently did a basement remodel for us. We had done a lot of research on what we wanted, and had several proposals before going with Phil and his crew. He had built our deck last summer, and re-shingled our roof after the hail storm so we knew what his quality would be. Our basement was not a simple put up some 2x4s, drywall and a paint job. It required some extra imagination to re-route some plumbing, put in a multi-level stairwell, and improved our heating and cooling. We also converted our egress window into a sturdy brick and cement exit including a bilco door. Phil is very considerate to the work site, and treats it like it is his own house. We are very pleased.

We wanted to remove a window on our living area wall to provide a space for our 60" TV. Nathan removed the window and finished it in a professional manner. He finished it inside so it was ready for paint and on the outside so it is ready for plastering. Nathan was on time, easy to work with and very honest with his quote. He went above and beyond to make sure we were happy with the end result. We were very happy. Thank you Nathan. Job well done. We will be calling again for future jobs we need done around the house.

We have been very impressed by GoTo Roofing and would recommend them to others without the slightest qualification. Our roof was overdue for replacement and we knew it. We thought hard about what would be best for our house, surrounded by large hardwoods (so in spring and autumn we have lots of leaves and moisture); we thought that a metal roof would be a good choice and asked for estimates from a number of contractors. Still looking for the right company, I found GoTo Roofing through Home Advisor and called for an estimate. Steve came to our house twice, each time spending at least an hour with me and then me and my wife; he (alone of the contractors we dealt with) brought samples of materials and carefully explained why he thought a high-quality shingle roof would be a better option (and less expensive -- let me emphasize, he *persuaded us to take the less expensive option*). We were very pleased to be able to make a really informed choice, and, for the budget we had set aside for a metal roof alone, GoTo Roofing: replaced most of the old insulation and wood beneath our old roof, after removing it; installed a new, second layer of wood and insulation, enabling better ventilation through soffits; installed high-quality shingles with excellent guarantees; replaced our gutters with a new, leaf-free system; and replaced our sky light. The foreman of the crew, Mario, was a model of courtesy and patience, always ready to explain what was happening; the whole crew could not have been more efficient (arriving around seven, leaving about twelve hours later) or courteous (absolutely no mess left) and the job, despite new challenges emerging, was done in four days and within weeks of our receipt of the estimate. Our roof -- steep and on a three-story house -- presents many challenges for roofers, but Mario's crew handled everything with ease. A month later, the roof looks great, heavy rains have seen no leaks, the leaves are blowing off the gutters, as intended, and our house seems to heat and cool better. We could not be happier with the results and having found GoTo Roofing, the best contractor we have worked with in the twenty-plus years we have owned our house.

We had Tim put crown molding and bed rail in our daughters room. He was so precise measuring and cutting everything to make it look perfect. He also hung a replacement door and trimmed another door for us. We will definitely call him back when we are ready to put cabinets in our laundry room. This is our first home, and having to work with contractors has been a headache. Wish he could do everything we need done in our home!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

      • Trim repair:
        • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
        • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
      • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
      • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
        • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
        • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
          • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
