"I live in the Clarkston area and have been underwhelmed with the massage places in my area, so when I saw that Derrick was mobile, I quickly booked a session. So glad that I did. To begin, he was prompt and courteous. Before the massage, he asked me what issues I had and what areas I needed work on. He also asked me about pressure. He easily adjusted to different areas that needed different pressure and technique. Derrick's demeanor also put me at ease (you don't know how important this is until you've been massaged by a jerk or other off-putting character). I will definitely select Derrick again."

"Being a massage therapist myself, I know first hand the many hallmarks of a beneficial bodywork session. Daniel has a soft, yet firm touch, and uses innovative techniques that help soothe sore muscles while still maintaining a relaxing experience."

"I was looking for a masseuse and found Izzy on Thumbtack. The experience was great! The atmosphere in the office and room are professional yet warm and peaceful. The space is clean and welcoming. Izzy was very kind and caring. We talked before the massage and she asked questions about my health, what I was expecting and about my preferences (touch, etc.). I am 59 with some arthritis and a bit of stress as well so I was looking for reduction in pain and stress. The massage room was dark, quiet, the table was heated, the music relaxing. Izzy has a strong, firm but sensitive touch and I feel that she worked my hamstrings, calves and shoulders/neck in a more intense way than most massage therapists and it was great. I left the massage with another appointment and a sense of well-being. My neck, especially, felt more relaxed and a lot looser than when I arrived. I was very pleased with Izzy and the entire experience and look forward to my next massage with Isobel Lesser!"

I can’t say enough about her skills and knowledge of a massage therapist. I would recommend her to anyone who may suffer from such debilitating pain."

"Charmaine was professional and made me feel at ease. The office was quiet and peaceful. She used a combination of stretches as well as the massage strokes. She was very mindful of my needs and concerns. My only complaint would be I could have been covered up a little better. I never felt exposed but she only used one thin sheet."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
