Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?
A. Here are a few questions you may want to ask when you interview a prospective service provider.
Do you provide free estimates?
It should not cost you to get an estimate for services. It should not take more than a couple of days (weather permitting) to get an estimate.
How long has the company been in business?
Companies who have been around a while are still there because they are good at what they do. It doesn’t mean that a new company isn’t good too, but the company who has been there for a while must be doing something right. Question them as to what qualifies them as a lawn service provider? What is there expertise and knowledge? “I have been mowing lawns since I was 10 years old, does not make you a qualified turf grass expert, only a very knowledgeable lawn mower operator.
Do they have a written guarantee and what does it mean?
Ask about their warranty/guarantee and have them explain it in detail. What happens if you are not happy with some aspect of the service? Whom do you contact, what will they do, and what are your options?
Who handles your account?
Whom do you contact and who checks on your account and the service you have been provided?
How will you be billed and what are your payment options?
Do they give discounts for prompt payment or payment by check? Do they accept credit cards?
Will they give you a detailed explanation of the service or services you are buying?
How much time do they take explaining the service and making it clear as to what you should expect? You should know what you are getting and how to know that you have gotten everything you are paying for.
Can you have the services tailored to your specific needs?
Are they willing to put together a service package based on what you really need and want rather than a standard package that may contain elements that you don’t need or that are not a value for you? Can they provide you with other services you may need in the future?
Will the person providing your service have the training and knowledge necessary for the job?
Especially if they are applying fertilizers or pesticides (weed control). Anyone applying fertilizers or pesticides must be licensed by the State of Minnesota and should be able to provide proof of being licensed.
Are they insured?
In event of damage or injury on your property, do they carry insurance? Most companies carry full business and liability insurance as well as workers compensation insurance. They should be able to show you a proof of current insurance coverage. If they are not insured properly, you could be liable for damages and injuries that occur while they are working on and around your property.
Can they provide a list of clients and references?
If they don’t have someone in your neighborhood that can be used as a reference, they should have a list of customers who are willing to give them a reference.
This certainly is not a complete list of questions you may want to ask, but it will give you a good start.
