Best groomer ever! Jesse expertly, professionally and gently groomed my 17 year old rescue mixed breed dog,Barnaby. Barnaby is a much loved member of our family and Jesse treated him as if he were her own dog! He is a bit frail at his senior age and Jesse was very gentle and understanding of his requirements. She is an expert and gave me professional advice on care for my dog's skin and coat. My dog was calm and comfortable during the entire grooming process. Barnaby and I are so glad to have met Jesse as our groomer and look forward to seeing her again!

We have just begun puppy training but came away knowing this was a very positive experience for both the dogs and their owners. They let the puppies teach each other. What a concept! Amazing how well that works. There are several trainers around to help direct and instruct. We definitely recommend Clever Canine Dog Training.

We adopted a dog from K9 Petz and we had an awesome experience! I worked with Randi exclusively and she was so great to work with...Lots of communication back and forth, very informative and explained what was required of us and what our new family member, Vinnie, needed in a home. She kept me informed every step of the process, allowed me to visit Vinnie several times, including visiting with our dog and kids to make sure everyone got along well. Randi was very up front about what was expected of us. I had an amazing experience adopting our Vinnie from K9 Petz and I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to expand their family with a new pet!! We couldn't be happier!

Steve has been a great professional to work with throughout the training of our German Shepard. His training techniques have worked great, and has shown over the first 6 weeks of training. The results have been so successful, that we just signed a second contract for his level 2 training course. I would recommend Best of Friends Dog Training to anyone looking for an experienced dog trainer with results that work!

Her interactions with us and our dog were important because our dog has a few difficulties. Desiree handled them well and was flexible. We will use her services again and highly recommend her to others.

Before I contacted K9AdvantEDGE I was at my wits end with my family dog. She was having such issues focusing and following commands. After her 2 week board and train with Tyler and Esther, Rooney was a completely different dog. I'm so pleased with the amount the two of them taught her. She is now one of the best behaving dogs in our neighborhood! If I ever get another dog they are the trainers I will be going back to!

We recently hired Anthony to work with our dogs on house training. We were fed up and had tried everything. After a consultation with our dogs he quickly determined that dominance was the main issue and that if we fixed that, the peeing and pooping would go away. It's been 3 days since his visit and the dogs haven't gone to the bathroom in the house yet! We are thrilled with their progress and would definitely recommend Tony to others.

Barbara Jo Matson has been walking and caring for my two Westies at noon for over two years. She not only provides amazing care for my dogs, she loves them as I do. I trust her to administer medications, monitor their health, and provide useful suggestions to improve their overall comfort, safety and health. Barbara has also been part of an in-home care team for my two Westies and my guinea pig when I have been out of town, I particularly enjoy reading Barbara's entries in the "dog-log." She always includes interesting and helpful details about the pets which keep us in clear communication. She is reliable and trustworthy. I whole-heartly recommend Barbara as an in-home pet care provider. Her service is second to none.

I have been training with Nancy for little over a year. It sounds cliche, but her positive approach to dog training has made a world of difference in our dog, Mabel. We went to Nancy because Mabel was a brat, and we were at our wits' end. With patience, Nancy helped us train Mabel to be a wonderful and happy companion who travels everywhere with us. We would highly recommend A Positive Approach.

Aubry does an amazing job walking my dog every time I am out of town. My dogs are always exhausted when I come home. They love her! Ocasionally I will ask for an extra favor like helping with some laundry or doing some extra training with my german shepherd dog and she never fails to please. Highly recommended to anyone!

I've been having trouble with my dog pulling on the leash. Tyler showed me some tricks & gave me some great tips to keep her by my side on a loose leash. Not only was he great with my dog, but he was very nice & patient as he was helping me work towards a more well behaved dog. I highly recommend him.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
