RJ Mott Construction remodeled much of my home in preparation for selling it earlier this year. We had all the formal areas tiled with 24"x 24"ceramic, the baths were rectangular vinyl tiles staggered with grout lines that truly looked like they were tile, the oak cabinets and banisters were redone to an Espresso finish, cabinet pulls added everywhere (we had 74 cabinets!), and the informal entertaining areas done in wood flooring. Everything was exceptional and my real estate agent who saw before and after was thrilled. The house listed and sold for more than we anticipated and I believe it was all due to the work done by RJ Mott Construction!

Tom was great to work with, we will certainly be bringing him back for additional work as we get it planned out. We had Tom out already as part of a basement finishing project and he was wonderful to work with and very professional. He was very clear on when the work would be completed, what times he would be on the job site and took extremely good care of my home and project like it was his own. The framing he did for the walls was a great base for the construction and everything went very smooth with the other trades who had to interact with the framing (like plumber and the shower area being exact and easy for them to fit the surround in without any concerns). We've also had Tom back to do a small start on the finishing and as I said we will have him back out once we are completely ready for the trim work to be in place. Do yourself a favor and if considering Tom hire him, he is worth the peace of mind and confidence that you will get knowing the project will be done right and with great care.

Caden came to my home next day to install a rather difficult exterior door and fix dry rot. He had multiple options for me to pick from and did the job the way I wanted it done. He was extremely fair in pricing and willingness to work around my schedule. He freely gave advice when asked on other projects and was very respectful. Caden is a rising star in the building industry in West Michigan. More builders like Caden are needed. I look forward to hiring him again on future projects and have already been approached by neighbors asking for his contact information. Do yourself a favor and hire this guy!

JBJ Building and Remodeling is the only company we use for our remodeling projects! JBJ remodeled our kitchen and put tile throughout our main floor. Jamie did a great job at listening and learning what styles we liked. He guided us to make choices in our kitchen that would accommodate our family's lifestyle and our budget. He was professional and trustworthy, as well as knowledgeable in all remodeling areas. We are more than pleased with the finished product. In fact, our kitchen is my favorite room in the house! I recommend JBJ builders to everyone and will definitely use them again!

Angello Cruz Having successfully undertaken a few smaller projects for me the year before my new house purchase, I felt comfortable and confident enough to work with Angello again in the complete renovation of my 1800 sq. ft. townhouse. This work involved a lot of demolition, reconstruction, electrical work, dry wall installation, plumbing and even landscaping showing how dexterous Angello can be and even when he encountered new challenges, he solved them successfully without fuss. As well as being a trustworthy, reliable character with a very likeable disposition, his rates are extremely competitive and he delivers! I miss him in Miami but I hope you all benefit in his new location. Keith Bacon

Stacy painted a large painting for our living room. She was fantastic in listening to our ideas and tastes when it came to colours and design! When she had captured everything we felt, she went off and painted using her own artistic flair! We are extremely happy with the result and feel that her painting has added wonderful warmth and aesthetics to our home. We strongly recommend her!

Keith did a great job repairing drywall, where we had removed a wall in a bathroom. He also repaired and textured the ceiling. He worked quickly, cleaned up, and was very pleasant.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
