I thought there was a bigger problem with my bathtub faucet then there actually was. Was quoted a high price and paid less than half for the repair. Seems the only thing wrong was some washers that needed to be replaced. I truly appreciate the help, although I think the price for replacing 3 washers was astronomical. We all have to make money some how, but I only hope this quick fix will not cause more headaches.

He had a crew and they motored along to make quick work of my tree trimming project. Jim is friendly & outgoing. Communication was good. That being said, there were two places where shingles were damaged. I'm certain he'll make this right.

I would absolutely hire Michael again! He showed up when he said he would with a nice looking proposal with his understanding of the problem as well as information about him. He got right to work to discover the problem and repair it. He is nice, neat and knowledgeable. A great combination!

Mr Ali Jabar completed many projects in my home. He painted three rooms and two hallways; caulked the bathroom sink and tub; custom fit the doors for three closets; and repaired a crack in the concrete near my entryway. Best of all he fit new baseboards in two rooms. And, he also repaired two sliding closet doors. I was preparing to sell my house, but now it looks so nice I want to stay!

The job preformed was challenging due to weather conditions. They did a test prior to coming out to my home to insure they could complete the job. They were able to complete the task and did and excellent job. Many thanks!

We looked, literally, for 1 year to find a reliable handyman to repair several small projects at my office and house. Mr. Vasquez was an amazing answer to this search. He was extremely polite, reliable, communicated above and beyond efficiency by email, followed through on precisely what he promised, sought feedback on his work to assure satisfaction, and offered very reasonable prices. He has earned our respect, and we are delighted to offer him more jobs in our home, and refer him to our friends.

I cannot say enough great things about Al's work. I thought I was going to be in a bind when a different company became non-responsive however through Thumbtack I found Al and his company and he was very easy to work with. He met me at the job site to take a look at the repair needed on my schedule and provided instant feedback on what would need to be done along with an initial time estimate. His quote was competitive and the work was top notch. No complaints on the repair whatsoever, for a fix that included external siding, internal drywall, window replacement, and paint, among other things. On top of it, he was professional and very easy to work with. I would highly recommend Al for contracting and construction needs.

I have only positive things to say about this experience and the work that Bobier Woodwork and Design did for us. We presented them with our idea for some modular mirrors in our family room to make things feel brighter and more spacey, and what they came up with is more elegant, effective, and cool than we envisioned. It was done on time, safely, with good communication and openness. Frankly, I hope we could be "reviewed" as well as customers for this company so they'll work with us again, because I'm sure we'll be looking to throw some more business their way. We just moved here recently and have been making a lot of changes and upgrades to our home, but this one ranks as the best thus far. Signing up with Thumbtack and getting linked with Bobier Woodwork was an extremely fortunate thing. Thanks!

J. Mills Plumbing is fast, efficient, professional, and honest. I appreciated that John and Joe told me what must be fixed, what should be looked at down the road, and what, quite frankly, looked good and did not need repaired. They sincerely wanted to help my family, not just stuff their wallets.

Ricky at RNS Services went above and beyond for me. I was very pleased by his workmanship & excellent work ethic. He's a straight shooter, that in itself is hard to come by these days. I was completely at ease with him & he kept me informed at evey step. I will always call RNS Services for all of my needs. He does it all from roofing to flooring & everything in between. I can't recommend him enough, he's a man of integrity & a wealth of knowledge when it comes to home improvements.

Mike finished 2 bathroom remodels that were started some time ago and never finished. He completed a tile floor (looks wonderful!), installed wood planks on a wall, smoothed out a lumpy wall so it can be painted, installed vinyl floor and floor trim, installed 2 toilets, and repaired the floor around one toilet. It was a pleasant, stress free experience for me and I'm very happy with his work. Mike was knowledgeable, friendly, and professional, was here when he said he would be, and finished the job on time. He did a great job and I'm glad that I hired him.

We had a cracked ceiling. Zack did a great job presenting us with a couple of repair options and then executing the plan well and at an affordable price for us. It was not a large job, but he fit it in and followed up to answer our questions. And, he is very conscientious about clean up. We would definitely hire him again in the future.

I found an over the range microwave that matched my appliances on sale at Home Depot. The problem was it was $99 for install but only if they were replacing an existing microwave and I had a range hood. I came on thumbtack and George submitted a bid. He was not only the best price he was timely, polite and very professional. I would definitely consider hiring George again. And I highly recommend his services.

Jessica began cleaning my home almost a year ago. With four kids and a full-time job, my husband and I needed help keeping the house clean. Jessica does a great job and understands the struggle because she’s a mom too. I love having her in my home and fully trust she’ll do an excellent job. I also love that she uses natural product to clean because it’s very important to me as well.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

    • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
    • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
      • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
    • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

    • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
    • Toilet replacement: $75.
    • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
    • Faucet replacement: $125.
    • Garbage disposal: $75.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
