Nick and his team were great. We had a laundry list of things for him to fix and he did it all. We needed carpet pulled up and tacks taken out, light fixtures put up, toilets unclogged, spigots fixed, gfci installed, and he surged protected the whole house! Needless to say he pretty much does it all and with great quality and amazing prices. We will be using him for other electrical work for our basement because he did a fantastic job! I highly recommend him and his team for sure!

I hired Jim and Joe to install recess lights in my family room. They were very reasonable in price and did a great job. They also hung my tv on the wall. They were so good I asked for a quote for some basement work. They replaced all the tiles in my ceiling and added recess lights. I wanted them to fix the drywall that my boys damaged playing mini-basketball. Instead they offered a great solution of putting wood on the wall by the hoops. It looks so great! They were professional, clean and very helpful!

We were trading out a ceiling fan for a chandelier in our dining room. My husband had the fixture wired and installed but it did not work. We called Matt and he determined that there was a loose wire and had it up and working in no time. Matt determined the problem with our outlets in our basement and had them fixed quickly. We will use his services in the future and definitely will recommend him to our family and friends. He is a very nice guy.

Alex was great. Prompt, honest and efficient. He refinished our basement for us; we wanted a “practical” play and work out space and he respected that (didn’t try to talk us into what we didn’t need). Would use him again and highly recommend him.

When we had some bad storms here in Detroit, MI the only company that had time to call me back was Disaster MD and they were very professional. I was very pleased with their work, our basement was flooded with at least an inch of water!

Louie finished all the final trim work and door painting in my basement. I am extremely particular when it comes to detail work; he listened closely to what I wanted, took a ton of care to be neat and clean with every task, and did very good work. He is a licensed pro and acts that way from initial contact to finishing his work. I would definitely hire again and also recommend to others.

Nick and his team did an exceptional job painting the entire inside of our house and our basement walkout. They were extremely professional and customer focused. Before they completed the project they did a detailed walk through with us to make sure everything met our expectations. We are very pleased with the results and highly recommend Stick Construction and Painting.

I’m so impressed with the work that was done! Both my fireplaces were fixed the same day I called which meant a lot because we were throwing a huge party that evening and wouldn’t have had any heat in our basement without your excellent service!!

I had Jeff paint both my finished basement and my 3 car garage. He inspected the areas to be painted, made all necessary fixes as needed and repainted walls and trim with a quality finish. Cut lines between trim (done in white) were straight and clean. He protected the floor and furniture and cleaned up leaving behind only an excellent paint job. I recommended him to neighbors and they were very pleased with his work too. He also assisted me with plumbing work that popped up while he was painting, so he knows his way around Home Improvements as well as painting.

Kris did an excellent job renovating my basement room. He added shelving , tile. Lighting. Indeed Kris is a perfectionist. He is a man of many talents. Other project: installed a new sink, garbage disposal and faucet. Previous projects: kitchen and bathroom floor, "man cave" with a home theater.

Very impressed with his willingness and eagerness to get started and get the project done. Was always there and at time he said he would be. Bill built a new support beam in our basement, and removed the temporary wall that has been holding up the main floor of our house for some time. He also re-built some of the concrete block wall that began crumbling, mortared it back together and re-supported all of the compromised areas. He even removed hidden debris from someone else's unfinished job without being asked to. In my opinion, Bill went above and beyond and he was confident and relaxed about the whole job, which makes such a huge difference to me.

Alfonsi Construction installed a access door and trim in my finished basement workout room to hide a electrical panel box. They also installed a rubber gym floor in the same area. Alfonsi Construction did a good job on my project at a reasonable price!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
