Our family needed to sell our mom's home which desperately needed painting. After meeting and getting quotes from several painters, we chose Creative Painters Plus. The owner, Tracy Richardson, was very prompt and professional over the phone and in person. It was important for us to choose a painter that was insured and used their own workers. Tracy has three crews which enabled us to get the painting done in a timely manner. Tracy was very helpful. She has much experience in painting to prepare homes for sale. She is also a Lead Color Consultant, so, that helped us in choosing a neutral color for the walls and a contrasting color for the trim. She gave a detailed, itemized quote that was very competitive. In addition to the many cracks and old water damage to a bedroom ceiling that had to be repaired, the previous paint on the walls, and especially the trim, had a coating that needed to be taken care of. To make matters worse, one of the walls was painted black, another was painted dark red, and finally, the paneling was painted in different colored stripes. The result is fabulous. It is more of a makeover than simply a paint job. Manny, did a great job of repairing all the cracks and water damage. They used a superior paint product throughout which totally covered the black and red walls, and even the striped walls. They also did a great job in cleaning up after they were done. We are extremely happy with the result. It was more of a makeover than a painting job. They even completed the job before they indicated. I would highly recommend Tracy Richardson and Creative Painters Plus.

Let me start off by saying if I could give more than 5 stars, I would. I initially hired Wilson Painting to paint one of my doors. After doing such a great job, I asked for two separate quotes for the interior and exterior of my home. They gave me two amazing quotes with a very generous discount. I myself am very picky when it comes to painting, but they took my anxiety away. They did a FLAWLESS job and even gave me a 10 year warranty free if I need any touch ups done. My home never looked so beautiful. I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this company for your painting needs. You will not regret it! Thank you guys so much, you did an awesome job! Also, customer service was fantastic. They came out and quoted me that same day and finished the job in a very convenient time frame!

We were looking for help with painting a few areas in our home that we purchased last year. We have a large family room with a complicated vaulted ceiling design, and also a stairwell and a hallway that had been wallpapered. The first contractor we called came to look at the job and said they could start in two weeks, and the second was very professional but too expensive for our budget. J&L came and quoted the job for a reasonable price and was able to complete it in just two days. They were friendly and they care about their customers. I was able to use the paint of my choice and very pleased with the quality of the results.

Extremely responsive and a great communicator. We hired John to paint our deck, and I've already hired him again to do additional painting and wood repair work. I'd happily recommend him to family and friends.

After contacting perhaps over a dozen painters in the metro Detroit area, I found Mike Kennedy’s quote to be just right. His price offers both labor work and paint (he doesn’t have a limit in terms of the number of paints you choose)! Although I was skeptical at first, Mike was able to complete painting three average size bedrooms, on his own, in approximately eight hours. He was very professional and did his best in making sure I was satisfied. I experienced two issues with the service. First, Mike cleaned the paint rollers in my basement sink. I had new appliances inside-washer and dryer-and they were splattered with some paint. In addition, I placed some cardboard on the concrete basement floor to protect it from the paint. Unfortunately, some paint spilled over and seeped through the cardboard. It took me a good hour to clean up the mess after Mike left (I could not get all the paint off the floor). I reported this to Mike and he was very apologetic and offered to clean up. I would recommend that the location that the paint rollers/brushes are being cleaned is well lit and use of heavy duty cardboard/material to cover surfaces/appliances/furniture. Overall, I appreciated Mike’s professional service and would definitely recommend him!

We had Dave Sicard paint our home in August, 2015. We were new to the area and he came recommended. He did not disappoint us. He was the consummate professional paying rapt attention to detail. He also had an excellent price. We would highly recommend him for your painting needs. Tom and Gert St. Dennis

Matt was absolutely amazing! We had a nursery painted with an underwater theme. Never even really heard him while he was here for 2 weeks. It may seem like a long time but to us with what was done it was super fast! When i came on here to find someone to paint i got a couple people who responded. the reason i picked matt was because when he sent an email to me it wasn't like everyone else who responded. He asked me what i wanted what i was looking for, more personable then the others who just gave me the price per square foot and nothing on what i wanted. He was very accommodating to our busy life and came to us and didn't charge a fee for gas (which some said they charged for) mind you we lived over an hour away. when finally meeting with him once again it what we wanted and what we wanted to see in the painting. We love fish tanks and have certain fish we like and wanted to see and he made sure to include them. Everyday he came around the same time we simply left the door unlocked because we work late hours we still would be sleeping. A time or 2 we needed to leave earlier then when we needed to and it was never a problem. Now to the artwork itself, simply amazing! We had one big mural on one wall and the others just painted to match. The fish and coral look so real and it was well balanced and scaled perfectly. It was mostly hand painted and some airbrushed. Matt has more than exceeded our expectations the nursery is absolutely breathe taking and couldn't be more happier to have found him. We will definitely be hiring him again!

Jim did an awesome job finishing the painting that I had started. He completed it sooner than he had initially said and even came back to do some touch up work in rooms that he didn't even initially paint! The paint he did do looks awesome! I would highly recommend Jim for anyone looking for a painter...

I hired Vini and his team to completely re-do the pillars on the outside of my house. Vini was professional, on-time and even made a suggestion on the paint color that made a huge difference in assisting to create the overall modern update to my house I was looking for. Many of the neighbors commented on how the house was completely transformed based on the custom woodwork that was performed on the pillars at my house. I would highly recommend Vini and his team for all future jobs that involve any type of custom woodworking or finish carpentry work.

Alex was a breath of fresh air as far as dealing with contractors. Not one excuse ever left his mouth. He was on time both days of the job, worked 10 hours the first day. Drywall and mudding skills are top-notch. After painting, my 1973 drywall appears brand new. I would recommend him to everyone and will be calling on him for future projects. Class act!

I initially hired these guys to tear out and re-tile my master bathroom. I knew I liked them when they showed up to quote the job and took their shoes off on my front porch. The tile job was fabulous and completed in 6 days. Halfway through the project, I discovered they also do wallpaper removal. I immediately hired them to remove wallpaper in an upstairs full bath and then paint. That also turned out beautiful. They are currently working on removing wallpaper and painting my kitchen. While all the quotes I received (4) were about the same price, these guys stood out for their work ethic. I have more projects planned for next year and have already decided that Leo Tile & Painting will be the ones doing them.

Giovanni was exceptional!! I am so pleased with the work he recently completed in our basement. Giovanni replaced a significant portion of drywall, repaired trim and painted. He demoed an old set of bookcases and transformed the entire space. While the quality of his work is reason alone to hire him, he was a pleasure to have in our home during the time he was there. I have two young kids and they both loved him! They would shout when they saw his van in the mornings. Haha! Highly recommend Giovanni, and plan to use him again in the future. He is very knowledgeable and detail oriented.

Prek came out to give us a quote for painting the interior of a house. We also wanted him to paint the basement walls and ceiling. Prek recommended epoxy paint for the basement floor. We thought that would be a good idea to brighten up the basement. He and his crew did a great job of painting. We were very impressed by how great the basement floor looked after he used epoxy paint and sprinkled different colored flecks on the gray floor. He made the house so good, we were able to sell the house quickly. Very professional and finished the job when he said he would. Would definitely recommend this company!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
