We inherited our house from my parents and I was looking for ideas and ways to bring it up to todays' standards and styles. I requested NWT Services to come out and look over our home to give us their thoughts on ideas to make our home, our home! The technicians not only presented us with some good ideas, but when they put it all into working perspective we were blown away! We had them finish our basement, remodel our kitchen and remodel our bathrooms, and also some general items in rest of home. I have dealt with contractors in the past, but Nick and his company are different. By that, they are of the caring nature, they get the job done, are clean, punctual, professional, honest and also are not expensive. They treated us and our home with respect. These are things that are lost amongst many contractors. I could tell that whoever taught them their line of work, taught them the right way. I would highly recommend for any project, large or small. We will always call them back for anything we need done.

After reviewing three contractors, I went with Nicholas and Anthony, his tile guy. He did an amazing job! Anthony was a pure perfectionist and neat in his work and gave me exactly the look I wanted for a backsplash and fireplace surround. Oh yeah, he sanded some windows and repainted the trim. Windows look brand new!! Will definetly use ADRM again for other jobs I need done around the house in the near future! The price wasn't the cheapest, but wasn't the most expensive either. Nicholas gave me a fair price for great work, what more can you ask for?

Tom is the best. OI have hired him in the past to redo and extend an old deck which turned out fantastic! Now he is in the process of finishing my basement and I am thrilled with the framing work he did in the 1250 sq foot space. I will definitely continue to hire Tom as not only are his costs reasonable, he always call me back and shows up on time. When i have tried to hire out other handyman or contractors its been the opposite. A lot of no shows or half done work that I they never call me back and go dark.

We just had our kitchen cabinets painted by JTR. They were original oak and we had them painted a delicate white. We couldn't be happier, they look amazing. Entire process took about 2 weeks, with only 3 days of them in the house painting. John was extremely responsive and gave me constant updates which is rare from my past experience with contractors. I would highly recommend JTR for any painting needs you may have.

My experience with Hector and his crew was amazing... Hector was the first contractor to provide an estimate and actually came within 30 minutes of contacting him .. he was on his way home from another job ... right away I viewed him as someone who valued me as a potential customer as well as valued my time... His estimate was within or below the cost of what a couple of the other contractors bid my cement work at... there was a distinct difference in his presentation of the work to be performed and the extra details that he gave to explain how the job would be done ... While performing the work Hector along with his crew were very respectable... prompt.. conscientious... thorough ... along with so many other words to describe his work ethic combined with the quality of his work... for example I can't tell you how many times I watched him with the level to ensure that the pitch of the driveway.. sidewalk and patio was just perfect ... it was very clear that he was taking his time to provide me the best quality work as possible and not just trying to quickly finish and get to his next job.. Hector and his crew also did an amazing clean up after every step of the process .... even the final clean up and the detail work to clean up the yard ... no trace of him being there other than my perfect driveway ... sidewalk and porch... ... Hector is a great guy with impeccable work ethics and I am glad that I hired him and his crew ... he did such a great job I am also contracting him for further work within my family... If you need concert work... Hector is the only contracor to call ...

Jon was polite and professional throughout our project. We have original plumbing in a 1948 house, and he was patient and thorough in working on our shower fixtures. It took a few visits to get the job done due to a lack of replacement parts. After replacing cartridges, the leaks are gone and our fixtures function much better (tighter turning and easier to control temperature) We are now getting a quote to add a bathroom in our basement!

Phil and his crew were a breath of fresh air. We have had numerous problems with contractors in the last few weeks and my husband and I were becoming jaded due to the number of problems arising from having contractors in our new home. These concerns were shared with Phil and his response was, "You're going to love me". He was spot on! Phil communicated, called the night before to confirm paint colors and their arrival the next morning. They were on time and started IMMEDIATELY. I've never seen a crew work so hard and so consistently until the job was completed. And the quality of work.....all I can say is WOW! Phil and his crew made sure my husband and I were completely satisfied prior to leaving. They painted our great room (living room, entry room, dining room, kitchen, entryway stairwell), ceiling, and laundry room all in ONE day-12hrs to be exact. The entire process was easy and their job was flawless. I would highly recommend Phil and his team. I've actually already recommended them to my family. My husband has been talking about other rooms in the house we should have them paint. 😊 I would not hesitate to hire Phil and his crew again.

I can not say enough good things about Michael! He came out on a very short notice due to another contractor going MIA half way through, started the next day and finished the following. All over a holiday weekend! He saves our butts, and did a great job. What you get when you hire him is an honest, kind, and hardworking guy. I have already recommended him to friends and wouldn't hesitate to hire him again.

I worked with Marcin from Moda Construction. Marcin was great! He walked me through the whole construction process and my quote. There were no hidden or unaccounted for costs in my quote. He was timely, on budget, on schedule and meticulous. Everything you would want in a contractor without the hefty price tag! Highly recommend if you're looking for a first class contractor.

After having several contractors doing various work around our home, we were shy about getting another to do a bath remodel. Rockwell came in and worked every day until the project was finished because they knew that this bathroom had the only shower. The professionalism was outstanding, and quality of work performed is next to none. I would recommend Rockwell to anyone!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

Who remodels bathrooms?

The professional best equipped to handle bathroom remodeling is a general contractor. A general contractor is typically licensed by the state or region in which they work to carry out home remodeling projects. To receive licensing, they must generally demonstrate their knowledge of construction and building and safety codes. General contractors act as the organizer for the entire bathroom remodeling project, ensuring that each element (new tile, shower pan replacement, lighting installation, etc.) is completed at the appropriate time by the proper contractor. Before hiring a general contractor, it’s wise to do your research. In addition to getting several competitive bids, here are questions to ask:

  • May I see before-and-after photos of some of your recent bathroom remodels?
  • Will I need permits for this project? Do you apply for those?
  • May I see proof of insurance and licenses?
  • Can we have a written contract outlining scope of work, budget and timeline?
  • Will you be here each day overseeing the work?
