As co-owner of Koei-Kan Karate, a martial arts school in the Detroit, MI area, I have to give a rating of 5 stars. I have known (Sensei) Mr Mason for over 20 years. He truly is an extraordinary motivator and teacher. This review is not a matter of one scratching another's back for a favor in the past. I know first-hand how hard it is to motivate people yet stay motivated yourself and I have to say, Sensei Mason is exceptionally adept at this. It seems he is able to find the good qualities of an individual and build on those to make the person better. Also, he tactfully finds the weaknesses in one (or a group) and helps to mold the person's weakness stronger. I must say once again, this man is truly an exceptional teacher and motivator. I believe if you meet him, you will find out for yourself.
I started with Quintin about 6 months ago. Since that time he has helped me to get more out of my workouts which has not only helped my health but also my self confidence. He is a fantastic motivator and is always upbeat and positive while pushing me to set and achieve new goals in health and fitness!
Master Doug's an excellent teacher; he always provides clear instruction and does a great job helping me learn my strengths and how to capitalize on them, as well as shoring up and fixing weaknesses in my practice.
I have experienced Lenny's teaching skills in a 2 part self defense class for women. This was a larger class than expected. Lennie was prepared with a binder of materials for each of us, many simulations for us to engage in, as well as 2 extra teachers to work with the larger group. I particularly enjoyed Lennie's enthusiasm for the subject and his constant encouragement.
I was so pleased to find Sam! I wanted a self defense class specifically for myself and my daughter. We had 3 participants and Sam was willing to travel to us. He gave us an excellent, hands on, 2 hour class. He was so down to earth and very informative. He gave us various situations of attack and how to best fight your way out of those attacks. Sam's best attribute was that he cared about what each individual was needing from the class. For my daughter it was how to deter unwanted advances. For my friend, who is a runner, it was how to get out of a situation if she was attacked when running. For me, it was to learn the counterpoints you can utilize to get someone to stop their attack. Sam was fantastic! I highly recommend using him for your self defense needs!
I received a few self-defense lessons from this vendor. Style: Jeet Kune Do (JKD) Pros: Brian, my instructor, was incredibly knowledgeable about this style and was excited to teach it. He worked within my limitations - I am not very flexible or coordinated, so he tailored his approach to work within my limits. That's what JKD is about: creating a system that works for each individual. Brian was also a compassionate teacher. He always asked permission before he went into a demonstration, meaning he never laid a hand on me without my consent. At no point did I feel intimidated or threatened, which has not always been my experience in studying other martial art styles. He was also diligent in assigning me homework so that, when we weren't working together, I had plenty to practice so we could make more progress in our next section. His prices per lesson were also incredibly fair. Cons: With Brian's excitement and interest in the style came a little impatience. He's so eager to teach that he occasionally overloaded me with information. I'm sure if I had said as much to him, he would have understood and slowed down. But his energy is contagious, and I wanted to learn just as much as he wanted to teach. For anyone else working with Brian, be sure to speak up if he's going too fast, and I'd be willing to be he'd understand. As I said, JKD is all about flexibility, meaning the style can be adapted for your needs.
