Nick replaced a part in our Bosch dishwasher. The first person who came seemed puzzled by the Bosch, couldn't even get it our from under the countertop. We were considering the costs of removing tiles from the kitchen floor to allow the machine to slide out. We decided to pay another service charge to get "a second opinion." When Nick arrived, he pointed out two screws that were holding the dishwasher in place. Once those were removed, the dishwasher slid right out. Nick figured out what was wrong, ordered the part, installed it and voila! We got his card and will be hiring him to do some drywall repair in a couple of months. We highly recommend him.

We were very happy with their work. It was a small kitchen remodel that involved relocating can lights and replacing drywall after demo. Also putting new crown moulding on the cabinets. They were very pleasant to have around. We plan to have them do work for us again.

We just had our kitchen cabinets painted by JTR. They were original oak and we had them painted a delicate white. We couldn't be happier, they look amazing. Entire process took about 2 weeks, with only 3 days of them in the house painting. John was extremely responsive and gave me constant updates which is rare from my past experience with contractors. I would highly recommend JTR for any painting needs you may have.

Moons Painting did a really nice job installing the molding in my kitchen. He kept me informed and made sure I knew exactly what he was doing the whole time. The price was more than fair for the job.

Harry was outstanding to work with for our kitchen remodel! He listened to our needs and developed a design that was a perfect fit for us. His work was neat and precise. He was a great help when having the counters installed by another tradesman. This was our first major remodel and we are now spoiled by how easy Harry was to work with and the high quality of his workmanship.

Mr. Vincent is and his team are very profesional painters. They acomplish more than what I asked for, and my husband and I are very pleased with their work. A very trustworthy team, with excellent customer service! They also were able to adapt to our schedule, our house looks like a new building, they fixed every hold or challenges on the old walls and got rid off the horrible blue, purple, yellow, and orange colors on the walls! Now the walls and the trims are impecable, fresh and clean. I give Mr. Vini and his team a 100% satisfaction. Alexis

They are great to work with, got the job done in a timely manner, and the backsplash looks exactly like I wanted it to.

We engaged Justin Morelock of NXT Design to work with us on conceptual design ideas and drawings of three spaces in our school buildings. This was a challenging project because our school was foundations were laid over 100 years ago and has outstanding architectural elements of the period, yet we needed to bring the spaces into the 21st century to enhance our educational environment. Justin and his team created designs that respect the historical nature of our campus, are functional, efficient and breathes new life into spaces where students will learn, grow, and fulfill academic and personal goals! Thank you, Justin and NXT Design! -The Grosse Pointe Academy Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan

I was recommended to use his services through a family friend as we were in the middle of a whole house remodel on an old farm house. He took essentially a blank canvas for our kitchen and designed it without a blueprint. He exceeded our expectations with the breakfast bar and the kitchen is where the majority of our visitors hang out now because of the wonderful functionality. He willing to work around my family. I would recommend for any type of job and look forward to working with him in the future.

MM3 has been an amazing carpenter to work with. We had him do trim work around our kitchen, mudroom and bath. Our home is very old; therefore nothing was straight or level. He did an exceptional job working with the “charm” and made things look as if things were straight. The trim looks fantastic. MM3 also came back a couple weeks after to finish our fireplace mantle. Again, we are very happy with the finished product. MM3 worked with our schedule, showed up to the jobs on time, and finished the jobs in respectable time. I would highly recommend MM3 for any finished carpenter work!

Scott created a plan for our an addition to our home. We went through various designs as we weren't 100% sure on what we wanted. Scott offered many creative ideas and ultimately gave us a plan we didn't think of but absolutely loved.

Steve and his team were incredible. I needed our stairwell, dining room, living room, and kitchen painted. Steve was very punctual when it came to scheduling the estimate, start date, and all other communications throughout the project. His prices were fair and they did an outstanding job. All I was looking for was a professional team who would pay attention to detail and get the job done in a timely manner, and they delivered tenfold! I will be reaching out to them for our next projects, I highly recommend.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.
