Chef Evon is amazing. Great food, great service. My only complaint is that she moved away and I need to find a new caterer.

We hired Chef Kee based on her diverse menu selection and pricing for a catering drop-off for 25 people. Chef Kee's patience and positive vibe made the ordering process easy. It was my first time having a home party catered and all her menu items sounded so delish, I just couldn't decide at first. She helped me through all that! A week before the event, we hired her as a personal chef for one evening for my son's birthday to "test the waters". Great experience overall! Chef Kee was on-time. The chicken and "green hulk" waffles were amazing! There were no leftovers for a party of 6 adults and 4 kids (7-12yr olds)! The stove and work area were clean. For the catering drop-off, the execution was a little off (based on my zero experience with caterers) where some time was spent assembling the appetizers at the house and the salad and garlic bread were forgotten. I expected "drop-off" to mean the food is already assembled, cooked, prepared and all the set-up needed is transferring them in the appropriate serving dishes/warmers. I overlooked these details as the food overall was delish!!! No doubt, Chef Kee can cater to even the pickiest of eaters!

I wanted to say hello and let you know that both my brother-in-law and I have read your book now. I loved it all: the writing style and the recipes and the information. He was impressed with the information (which says a lot since he's a chef who has been working in the health food field for some time now, and experimenting himself with cultured foods). And I wanted to tell you again how much I enjoyed the food you prepared for us at Mark's B&B this summer. What a feast, at every meal. Truly inspirational. I've been doing more cooking myself as a result, but I'm not approaching the complexity and deep flavors of your meals quite yet. It was great getting to know you and sampling your cooking! Regards, Wendy

We're a household with two working parents and when my hubby travels, I just don't have time to cook. Chef Elizabeth has prepared some yummy meals that my kids & I enjoy and we freeze the left-overs for later (if there are any - haha!). Ordering is quick and easy, especially for working parents and her food is truly amazing. Also, I love how accommodating she is to special food requests. Thank you Elizabeth!!!

We LOVE Tidy Tiffs! The attention to detail & quality of work that they do is outstanding. It is such a relief after working a long day to come home to a clean, beautiful house. I have had past cleaning services that did not meet our expectations - (Sometimes we couldn't even tell that they had come that day!) Tidy Tiffs has exceeded our expectations and we just love their work.

Ever since our Flower Bar event with Leah I've really enjoyed going to the grocery store and picking out flowers to bring home and arrange. Flower bar is such a great event! What could be better than drinking with your girlfriends and making beautiful flower arrangements? Would be great idea for weddings or recent home owners. Leah is very professional, and truly entertaining/hilarious to be around. We enjoyed her a lot. Thanks Leah!

Pie making! What a memorable experience, and the best homemade pies we've ever tasted! John and Valerie are such warm, lovely hosts and made us feel right at home from the moment we walked in for class. From pie making, to taking photographs, great conversations and laughter, to the tour of their historic home, our hands on their fascinating antique items, to meeting the chickens who layed our pie eggs, to snowshoeing in their back trails with our puppy..heaven is for real! Especially here! Can't wait to come again!

Honestly, I have no words to express our gratitude for Lorie and her amazing team. They were consummate professionals, managing three events for over 100 people. Seemless, outstanding service, follow through on even the smallest details. And my goodness, cheerful, friendly. But wait, there's more. Owing to her diverse skill set, Lorie and her son Bryce deployed CPR to save a guest's life from a heart attack. I mean literally saved his life. Were it not for Lorie and Bryce, we would be planning a funeral -- this confirmed by the cardiologists at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. And more, Lorie was able to help us find a good home for those in need in K-zoo for all the leftovers. All this to say that Lorie and her team can be hired for your function with complete confidence in superior service. I cannot recommend them more highly. Bless you!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

    • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
    • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
    • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
    • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
    • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
