Little Buddies, Travis, did a great job on our landscaping remodel. He built us a planter box, redid all of our rock, new plants and landscaping blocks/planter around our big tree. He is very knowledgable, creative, dependable, reasonable and talented. We highly recommend him and WILL use him again!

Jacob provided a good estimate to install 10 yards of decorative rock. His crew was careful to not damage the lawn and did an excellent job cleaning up when they finished. I will definitely use them for future landscaping projects.

Great job transforming the hill in front of our home from dead grass and weeds to a unique landscape. The rock wall that they installed was great, and the paver patio was done right (they diverted drainage through a plastic pipe in a trench they dug so rainwater would come out down the hill from the patio). Really happy overall.

Jeremy did great work on our landscaping. We had lots of weeds and the plants that were alive were overgrown and awful looking. Jeremy cleaned it all up, layed out fresh rock and planted new shrubs. The curb appeal he added will help tremendously when we list our house this month, I just wish we had done it sooner!

I'm only part way through my project (darn you Old Man Winter!) but what I can say so far is that I've enjoyed the process with b.e. Landscape. Ben is a talented designer and even with a basic city lot project like mine, his attention to the small details has made my yard really stand out. Kudos are also in order to his foreman Carlos on delivering a quality landscape install along with excellent communication and flexibility. Looking forward to spring and working with these guys on my new and improved yard.

I am a general contractor and was in need of some help with a basement remodel, I contacted Mike regarding the need for an installed drain tile system. He met with me on short notice and gave me a competitive quote for the labor. He and his crew showed up on time and took care of business. He was respectful of the client and their home and left them feeling satisfied with my choice in Wells Bros. I will be using them again as my go-to landscaping company. -Steve Weestrand - Avenue Homes, LLC

Matt did a great job installing a paver patio three years ago that still looks great! We hired him to remove three trees last summer, and he had them down, cut up, and cleaned up the same day. We have him booked to do additional landscaping this spring. Matt is affordable, on time, knowledgeable, and professional. I highly recommend him.

Awesome Experience with a true professional that was willing to listen, advise and complete the promises with results! Tom was very communicative throughout the project , he was on-site and directing his crew and took the extra steps to make sure our property was left spotless and ready for the next phases. Tearing out 47 year old Shrubs/ Hedges and removing a prior poor choice of rock (by hand) re sloping the foundations / installing and concrete bolting of the new Window Wells... Great Crew that were sweeping my driveway clean at 9:30 at nite in the dark! A prime example of a 'smaller' company setting their own goal for customer satisfaction and taking pride in the finished project! Thanks Tom, Sheila and Brian

Diana is a knowledgeable, attentive & fun professional to work with! She offers specific recommendations based on your stated (& sometimes unstated) needs, options for time & budget, as well as resources to make a plan happen from beginning to end. I was as impressed with her plans as the plant check after installation!

If you are looking for a garden that will flourish for years, honors nature, and sustains our environment, then Giving Tree Gardens is an undeniable choice. Thoughtful care and design will be taken to provide you with the garden you envision. I engaged Giving Tree Gardens to install two large gardens that are thriving, and received professional advice on how to maintain my existing landscaping as well. I have also been happy with the ongoing maintenance service and am intending to hire them again to install an even larger butterfly garden and fire pit.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.
