"Louis does an excellent job with listening and assessing your particular issues. His ability to perform deep tissue release was way beyond and beyond any other massage therapists I have experienced in the past. I was surprised at the quality and thoroughness of his work, and the education he provides for his clients following the massage. I would highly recommend him to everyone!"

"Cindy has played a crucial role in keeping my fibromyalgia symptoms manageable and often non-existent. I've been to at least 18 massage therapists and I've never found anyone who is as talented and intuitive as Cindy. She understands how to relieve pain. Her talents are a divine gift."

"Cindy took my appointment day of and was very accommodating. I usually get deep tissue massages and the massage therapists typically don't put a lot of pressure, but Cindy did a good job. She used organic coconut oil, which I like because it's good for your skin and hair. However, the place could use some upgrading, but they are moving to a newer location in June. I would recommend trying Cindy for a relaxation or deep tissue massage."

"Trisha responded right away to my inquiry for a home massage therapist. She arrived 15 min before our scheduled appointment giving her plenty of time to set up her massage table which was really great because we were able to start right on time. She didn’t have sheets, but I grabbed a big towel and some blankets and we made do. She did bring an amazing array of residential oils to choose from. I love the Frankincense oil she had. She has fabulously strong hands! I love a deep tissue massage and that’s one of her specialties. She really did an amazing job of getting the deep knots in the front of the front of my neck and also the arches of my feet. I would highly recommend her services. You can tell she really loves doing massage and energy work! I am definitely goin to hire her again!"

"Tracy is hands down, no questions asked, by far the best trainer I've ever worked with and I've worked with a LOT of trainers. She tailors each work out to your goals and body. She brings an amazing energy to each and every workout; along with all of the encouragement in the world to help you get through the tough times and lots of high fives to celebrate the victories. I would recommend Tracy to anyone and everyone!"

"Tamara is a gifted massage therapist and healer. She is respectful. She listens. She truly cares. While she doesn't have formal training in shiatsu, I described what works best for me (shiatsu). I derive more benefit from sessions with her than I have with massage therapists with 20+ years of shiatsu training and experience. Thank you, Tamara!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
