Michael did an EXCELLENT job and exceeded my expectations!! His attention to detail, expertise and professionalism is unmatched and I highly recommend him for any electrical needs. I hired him to place a total of 8 recessed lights, relocate a chandelier (above dining table), replace 2 kitchen pendants as well as 3 additional flush mounts and he added a foyer fixture above our stairway. Also, he was able to fix our ceiling fan/light combo that we managed to break ourselves while attempting to change the light bulbs. We have received many compliments on our lighting updates and I will definitely be reaching out to Michael for all future projects!

Cant go wrong if you have hired Greg! He did an amazing job with our kitchen back-splash . We selected the hexagonal shape marble which was hard to work with and required precise cuts to get the required shape and look good . He was patient and really took his time to get the back-splash done the right way. It turned out beautiful . Very professional , experienced and knowledgeable. Sure to hire for future jobs and highly recommended.

Barry repaired a kitchen window in my home. In spite of it being a seventeen year old window and challenging to get the correct part, he was very professional and did not vary from his first estimate to get the job done. I would reach out to him again and highly recommend Barry to others.

He did come out to the house and listened to my idea for adding trim to my kitchen cabinets. He didn't think it could be done, but volunteered to talk with other carpenters for their advice. He got back to me that the project could not be done. I agreed. He went above & beyond my expectations. I would definitely recommend him.

Roger built new kitchen cabinets for me and reconstructed doors and woodwork in a 1913 house I have rehabbed. He listens and makes suggestions The project turned out wonderful. I shopped him he was the same price as the cabinets alone at the big box retailers and less expensive than other custom cabinet builders. I would hire him again. Roger rocks.

My husband and I were looking to get our kitchen remodeled with Ikea's new kitchen cabinets. We got several quotes and Bruce's was what worked the best for us. The price was right for the scope of our remodel. Plus, he was so great to work with, from the project's start to finish. Bruce and his team are obviously skilled craftsmen. They put together our Ikea kitchen within our time frame and everything looks fabulous - even better than we could have imagined. It was also really easy to communicate with Bruce. He really listens and accommodated all of our requests (like that one time we didn't like the flooring we initially picked out - Bruce tore it apart and installed new floors we loved). We're so happy to have worked with Bruce. Don't hesitate to hire him!

I’m so pleased to find Kel Heyl on Thumbtack as now he will be available to even more homeowners. Kel has done work on and in my home since 2004, from very large projects to small tasks. I love that he is such a careful, creative and meticulous craftsman – his work is never slapdash. I’ve always been very happy with the results, and can recommend him highly to anyone interested in having work done on their home by somebody who knows what he’s doing, and will do it well. Built screened porch, based on his own design. (2004) Removed a chain-link fence and posts. (October 2004) Removed textured ceilings in living room and dining room. Ripped and installed new molding for both rooms. Installed a chandelier. (April 2010) Installed a new entry door to porch, including altering and adapting the jamb. (June 2009) Hung antique coat rack. (2008) Installed a new pre-hung access door for garage. (June 2009) Re-screened porch panels damaged by cat and raccoons. (July 2011) Hung a magnetic knife rack. (February 2012) Re-shingled garage roof, first removing old layers down to bare wood. (August 2012)

I started working with Deb after attempting a kitchen remodel without a designer and realizing I needed help. In our first visit, she saved my $50,000 kitchen remodel by changing the paint color! Small things can make a major difference and Deb has a natural eye for those things. I do not have a huge budget which is why I did not hire a designer before. I falsely thought that designer = big bucks. It does not. I think I'm actually saving money because I no longer buy things because they're pretty and on sale. I'm more intentional about the "look" I'm going for. I highly recommend two things ... 1) get a designer and 2) schedule an appointment with Deb and just hear what she has to say

We highly recommend Shawn for all your handyman needs. He is dedicated, hardworking, and knowledgable. Initially we hired him to disconnect and reconnect our plumbing for our new kitchen countertops. He also installed the sink, added a shutoff valve to replace an old one, and added a new outlet behind the gas range. He is very reasonable priced. He is now our go-to handyman!

Joe roughed in my basement for a full bath, kitchen and washer/dryer. During construction another tradesman accidentally drilled a hole through one of the pipes he had finished plumbing. I called joe and told him about the situation and he came over right away to fix the problem. I offered to pay him, but he refused payment. He was more concerned about my family having water than his inconvenience. In addition to being a competent plumber, he is someone you can count on. I highly recommend him for any of your plumbing needs.

Nate changed my kitchen countertops and he did an excellent job, completely transformed the look of my kitchen. Also changed shower door in the master bedroom. One of the things that was very unique about Nate was his ability to help channel me in the right direction. His friendliness, concern for whether I was comfortable with the noise level was very touching. Couldn't have worked with a better person.

Working with Behrant was a pleasure. We had messaged one another the same night I sent out my request for pricing and within two days he stopped by to do the work. He went above and beyond repairing a few damaged CMU block for my garage foundation and concrete slab. He also repaired the mortar on my brick chimney on my house. While doing the initial repairs it was discovered that the previous homeowner had caulked the brick and then in areas patched over it with mortar. Behrant brought this to my attention noting it should be addressed and included photos and a plan to come back an additional afternoon to repair the remainder of the chimney. He finished all of this work in a timely matter, went above his original scope of work, and his pricing was very fair and competitive. I will definitely recommend him to my friends and neighbors!

A small custom shop that has a wide variety of the highest quality products and materials for about half the cost of the big shops. If you like the feeling of dealing directly with the company owner to design your perfect kitchen - I would recommend Euro-Cabs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
