Michael came out the day he said he was going to and took a look at everything I needed done. He listened to what I wanted, made suggestions and improvements, and also showed me some options that will tie this project in to my future kitchen remodel. Very knowledgeable guy and very easy to talk to. I hired him to do the project and he scheduled it within a very reasonable timeframe. Very happy so far and excited to get the work done.

Larry helped us with a few misc. projects and did a great job with all of them! He fixed the drawers on a wooden dresser, fixed the storm door and installed a new chain for it, installed a new light switch, removed a wooden cabinet over the electrical panel, installed a deadbolt, attached a magnet clasp on another dresser swinging door, and even checked on a chimney flue cap He was professional and cleaned up after himself and also provided helpful tips on other items in our home. We would definitely hire Larry again and recommend him to family and friends.

I hired Studio Rebus to replace two doors that were kicked in during a home invasion. Kel created a very detailed budget for the project that my insurance company accepted without question, even though they had originally estimated the project to be much less (not realizing our doors were custom sized). Like most home improvement projects, this one took longer than originally projected, but I would definitely hire Studio Rebus again, for several reasons. First, Kel is responsive. No phone call or email went unreturned. He communicated promptly and thoroughly at every step of the process. Second, Kel's very thorough estimate left no stone unturned, so while our project got delayed because of supplier issues, there were never any surprises in expense. Third, Kel loves this work, and it shows. Unlike handymen I've hired in the past, Kel is very knowledgeable about houses, and lovingly pays attention to form and function and even the most minor finishing detail (as we requested--we were not interested in doing any painting or finishing work ourselves). Fourth, Kel kept our home and garage very tidy during this process, cleaning up after himself each day.

This is a Handyman Reference for Richard (Rick) Toboz. I have known Rick of nearly 30 years. His expertise in home ownership/handyman repair rivals general contractors. Neighbors, including me, seek his input and sometimes assistance, when tackling home projects. He has the tools and knowledge to fix/repair/build virtually any home project. And I will add he does not use a “that’s good enough” phrase – his projects are ALL completed with an excellent finished touch. I have consulted him on a few projects and would not hesitate to consult nor use him on any future home improvements

Great experience. Julio installed a new wood railing in my home and it looks beautiful. The total time between initial estimate and project completion was 11 days--which we especially appreciated because we have a baby due really soon. Julio has an eye for design and kept making improvements/suggestions throughout the installation process. I felt that he did not cut any corners and truly wanted to produce a quality product, even though I know the project took him longer than he initially expected. Julio is also very friendly and personable. Also, he's great with dogs--we had no problem letting our dog roam around while they were at the house.

I would recommend Gene Juarez and Above All Construction to anyone looking to do improvements in their home. Gene offered a quote that was better than competitors and backed it up with quality I believe would match those competitors. His team was friendly, prompt, and cleaned up well when finished with their work. I would hire Gene and his team again and, in fact, did for a quick project. He responded right away and finish the work faster than asked.

Mark was very prompt in response through the Thumbtack app. We exchanged direct contact information and scheduled the next available time for him to assess the project. What I appreciated most about my interaction with Mark was that this felt like a partnership. He assessed the project, he was kind, he wanted to do the best job meeting my price constraints and my quality expectationss. The job was completed in 1 day and it looks fabulous. I will definitely consider Mark for my next home improvement project. Thank you Mark!!

It is so hard to work with insurance to get the right amount money to fix damage done to your home. I am so glad we had Andrew and team on our side! Andrew came a couple times to evaluate the extent of the work then worked with our home owners insurance to get us 6 times the amount of money that was initially thrown at us by the insurance adjuster. He was very adept at maneuvering through the red tape, etc. Even then, with Homestead's persistence, it took us several months to put our home back together after a 3rd floor toilet overran all night!! Darn insurance companies! Despite all that hassle, Greg was a great project manager and the subs were all respectful, on time, and communicated well. I would definitely hire Homestead again.

Angie and her team are outstanding! Being able to move everything out of our home and having her stage it to look beautiful took so much stress out of our lives. She was able to take a split level home where the kitchen and living room where separated and make the entire space feel so much more open as your eye was guided to the beautiful interior throughout. She brought a special touch by adding pieces that really resonated with us – a thoughtful touch that made the experience even more special. In the numerous offer letters we received, prospective buyers commented on how lovely the home was, how well cared for, and how they were anxious to turn the corner into each room to see what was inside. Also, how it looked like many wonderful memories where made there and how they wanted to make their own in that special place. Angie’s designs where not only beautiful but made you feel like you could see yourself living there in a comfortable and inviting space. Since the proof is always in the pudding, we were floored by the number of offers we received and know that we received a much higher value on our home due to our decision to work with Angie and Orchestrated Living Design. Best decision we’ve made in a long time, and the relationship you’ll build with Angie is one you’ll treasure. Very grateful customers. Thanks so much! Shawna Stoltenberg

-- Tessa and Ryan are personable, professional, and excellent communicators. They exceeded our expectations in every way. To say we were impressed would be and understatement. Not only do they provide excellent customer service, they also made it a fun and exciting process. The quality of work they did on our home was top of the line. The second we closed on the home they set up everything, helped us design our perfect home, gave great insight, and were always updating us on every detail of the constructions project so we did not feel out of the loop. If you want someone who cares as much for your home as you, who genuinely wants to do the best work possible, and maintains excellent and positive communication TruBuild is the perfect company for you!

We originally contacted Cory for a bathroom remodel, but then changed the scope of the project and ended up creating a master suite with a 3/4 bathroom and walk-in closet. Cory was extremely knowledgeable and knew how to work with an older home like ours and did a great job maintaining its character while upgrading it. Costs, allowances and payment schedule are very clear. And while our project did get delayed slightly, this wasn't Cory's fault (but due to a subcontractor's schedule). Cory was often on the property, so we felt like a priority. He also helped us with things above and beyond our remodel (some door replacements, and helping when a tree fell on our garage and knocked out our power). We trust him and felt comfortable having around. His subcontractors were also very professional. We love the finished project and would readily work with Cory again in the future.

We had an emergency with our rood looking like a hot air balloon at 11:00pm at night when we got home. It was a result of cross winds. Advanced exterior sent some one right out to keep the water from getting in and then put a tarp in place with repairs the next morning. they worked with the insurance adjuster and with in 4 days the new roof and all work was completed. They worked directly with insurance and eliminated that hassle. Also they cleaned up the yard, decks and all supplies like they had never been there. I would recommend Advanced Exteriors over and over again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

For more on how long a bathroom remodel should take check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
