Aaron was very responsive for a project that I needed to be done quickly. We were able to schedule something right away. He is also trustworthy. Because I was out of town at the time of the project, I gave him the garage code to the location. While painting, he kept me updated via text messages and sent me pictures of the final result. The project included painting a yellow/orange kitchen/dining room to a more neutral color and adding a layer of white paint to some window and stairs trim. I was quite happy with his work and would hire him again in a heartbeat.

Needed new soffit board to replace rotting boards above bay window, that also contained a wasp nest or two. He also cleaned rain gutters. Things he did that were great: 1) showed up for initial meeting and to give estimate ON TIME! 2) performed beautiful work over bay window with new soffit boards complete with paint job; and removed wasps nest, 3) reasonably priced for this single-income household, 4) felt totally comfortable with him and appreciated his gracious attitude towards me as a female client. Was not condescending (which is my experience with a few contractors in the past). Will definitely ask him to return to help with more "fixer-upper" jobs as well as some more complex renovations.

Don was very responsive. Up straight about everything. No gimmicks. Cleared everything on the deck. Did a good job with the strain/paint itself. Product he used seems to be of good brand and quality. Also, he is good with adjusting his schedule according to our availability and also weather.

Kayla is a great person. She has a great personality and is very friendly. We enjoyed having Kayla in our home. Kayla did a wonderful job painting trim, doors and vanity for us. She was able to get the smooth white look we were hoping for on the cabinets and doors. She took many extra steps to make sure this was the case. Her prices are very reasonable and she worked within our budget. I would definitely hire Kayla again for other painting projects in our home. We hired Kayla to paint the trim on a room that we are also going to paint the walls on later so Kayla was able to be a little less detailed on getting paint on the walls. The house was picked up and put back together when she finished the project. There are little imperfections that we have found that are to be expected. They are little things we can touch up but I know if we wanted Kayla to touch them up, she would come back and take care of it. Overall, we are very happy with the look of our rooms.

Alex did a wonderful job painting our kitchen and living room. He started our project when he said he would, he worked all day to complete the job on time, he was respectful of our home and cleaned up when he was finished. My wife and I will never paint another wall as long as Alex continues to offer his services. You have our deepest gratitude...Thank you Alex!!

Excellent paint job. Very responsive to my calls/texts. I would have given a 5 but there were two fist size/shoe-shaped spills on my carpet that I found on my own. I understand these things happen but I wish the painters had told me about them.

Pablo just left my home after coming in and doing a super fantastic job. What a refreshingly great experience we had. My floating floors had come apart in several tricky places and I needed someone who was comfortable working with floors, baseboards, etc. He came in ahead of the scheduled time ready to go and did a really good work. My wife was so impressed that he wanted to know what else Pablo does and we will likely be using him to paint our whole main floor soon. Besides the quality of his work, he is very personable and his pricing is super competitive.

Excellent workmanship and overall experience. Shawn is a true craftsman. He is not only a talented painter but a real perfectionist. He makes sure ever detail is prepped and addressed before beginning to paint. He actually smoothed trim gaps so woodwork flaws were barely noticeable, once painted. Shawn is punctual, trustworthy, and a real pleasure to work with. I will definitely hire Shawn again.

I made the right choice when I hired Greg Erickson to paint our 1910 Minneapolis home. His attention to detail was much appreciated as he prepared and painted the exterior of the house, also making minor repairs where flashing was missing or a piece of hardy plank had broken off. The end result is dramatically different and will last for years. As he worked, he took care to keep the area clean with tarps and taping of frames. We agreed in advance when he started he would continue until the job was complete, baring rain and unavoidable delays, and this he did. Working by hand instead of spraying took longer and brought an old world quality and professionalism to the project, almost impossible to find these days. I strongly recommend Mr. Erickson to those who want an excellent job done.

I used ProTect Painters to paint my kitchen cabinets and walls. They also put up a tile backsplash. I am so pleased with their work. The painter was on time every single day. The painter worked diligently throughout the week. They also cleaned up better than any workers I have ever used before. I highly recommend these painters.

Al walked into a mess with my closet doors. I had a previous Handyman help me paint and detatch the doors. He corrected the errors and helped until the project was finished. Very easy to work with.

John carefully and competently dealt with a large ceiling water stain blending in the new paint with an adjacent existing ceiling. Exceptional workmanship, trustworthy, clean, punctual, and cordial, business-like communications setting it all into place initially. And I liked his background music as he worked!! Don't hesitate to consider this painter...he is an expert craftsman in my book!

Jennifer/Palettes of Color did a beautiful job painting my kitchen and upstairs loft. Because I am preparing to put the house on the market, I was also grateful to have Jennifer's artistic eye when I was considering paint colors--her attention to detail, her responsiveness and care, her interest in doing the job right, was so appreciated. It felt like she cared about the job, and about my preferences and cost limitations (as though she were painting for a friend or family member and not "just another customer"). Not only was the experience free of stress, it was actually enjoyable to come home at the end of the day and see all that had been accomplished. Felt like there was a tidy, somewhat perfectionistic Painting Fairy in the house for those few days. And, for all the dog lovers--the dog loved Jennifer too!

Saul (Wilson) was absolutely great! I had a huge amount of interior painting. There was one area that was higher priority due to some new flooring being put in. He had a quick response and was able to accommodate the quick request and quoted a great price for the entire project. I changed from very dark colors (Red, Dark Brown, Burnt Orange) to lighter Greys. He was spot on with the amount of paint needed. Throughout the project (which took a few days) he was always on time, and ALWAYS had very pleasant attitude/personality (which I greatly appreciated). There were a few areas I noticed the old color bleeding through. (He worked a little later at night so the lighting wasn't the best to show the bleed through). I showed him the areas the next day and he took the feedback very well. He made sure touch up the areas I mentioned and said if I noticed any other areas (even after the project) he would come back and touch them up. He had a helper come in a few days that was also very nice. She did a great job helping Saul. Towards the end of the project I asked him to do a few extra items like paint a door and trim that our dog chewed when he was a puppy. He was very accommodating and got the extra areas done super fast. He really did an amazing job. If I ever need any more painting done, he's going to be the person I call from now on. I would highly recommend him and intend to refer him to friends and family.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
