I am very thankful for my time working with Joel. He was my career coach a few years ago and the insight, confidence, and direction he gave me are very helpful. You could really tell that he is passionate about what he does and I felt like he actually cared about me. I didn't use his resume service, but next time I need one done I definitely will. I highly recommend Joel if you are looking for a career coach or life coach or even mentor or anything like that who actually cares.

To give some background, I was a recovering bulimic who obsessed with food and absolutely hated looking at the mirror. I’ve tried personal trainers a couple years of ago (usually the ones that give free sessions with your gym membership), but they didn’t help with building a positive self-image. Finally, I was fed up with my body and my strength (or lack thereof), so I googled for affordable personal trainers outside of gyms with good reviews. One of the reasons I picked Brandon right away is because of his affordable rate. Forty dollars per session is a steal, especially when he drives to your location and pays for his own parking at your own appointed time. That kind of service is very helpful for a struggling college student. Not to mention, he quickly identified a good meal plan, and he used the free assessment to really personalize the workouts he gives. It also helps to have a trainer who cares about your progress and doesn’t beat you up if you have a bad week. Sometimes life happens, but at least he’s there to advise you on what you should change if something isn’t working. I think he caught on that I love positive reinforcement, because his encouragement and advice really pushed me to change my lifestyle. The weight loss wasn’t even the best part about his training. I used to hate sports, athletics, or any kind of physical activity, but now I love running. Working out has officially replaced my netflix binges. I am super thankful and happy that I’ve had this experience.

I have been working with Bennett for about 2 months now and am very happy I contacted him. I am pretty new to fitness and have never been a regular gym goer. I always had some excuse in the past, but I became tired of not having the energy to keep up with my kids. Bennett has helped me with my mindset, confidence and persistence in working toward my fitness goals. I was a bit nervous to contact a personal trainer since I’ve never really gone to the gym with any regularity and didn’t know what to expect (plus Jillian Michaels and trainers like her scare me), but Bennett has been the very opposite of those stereotypical personal trainers. For one, he is an excellent listener and wants to know your goals and your body’s trouble areas. He is careful not to push too hard and is very keen on safety. Most importantly, he does things the right way, with the whole picture of fitness and diet and proper form and safety. He will meet you at whatever stage you are at and work with you to increase your health and fitness. One of his favorite expressions is “For now,” as in “Bennett, I am having a hard time doing this exercise.” “For now,” he’ll say, pointing me toward a fitter future. I see a lot of the reviews are from people who have been working with Bennett for 4+ years, so as a newbie I am speaking to people just now considering (or who have hesitated to consider for whatever reason) working with a personal trainer. Bennett is an excellent person to get you on your way.

Tyler is experienced, incredibly knowledgable and tailors my workout program to my specific goals and what works for my family's schedule. Even though I only see him twice a week, we are constantly in contact. Whether it be me asking questions about nutrition and macros or him sending me daily workouts and assessing my soreness; it's as if I have a personal trainer everyday. He clearly loves what he does and he's taking my fitness to a whole other level.

I didn't know what to expect when finding a personal trainer. However, once I got connected with I Think I Can Fitness, and have been working with Lori, since mid-March, I have been able to achieve my fitness goals. Not only that, but Lori has also helped me with advice on eating healthier, setting me up with at home workouts on days I am not working with her. She is so knowledgeable in helping me accomplish my wants to creating a healthier lifestyle. I highly recommend working with Lori if you need someone to help listen, motivate, and be there every step of the way for you to achieve your goals.

I chose to work with Todd Smith for many reasons. His free interview is a nice touch and shows an ethical commitment to allowing potential clients to meet him and interview him before spending money. It is also a nice touch that his fee is reasonable! I sought relationship coaching with my wife after working with a counselor that was a good listener but offered very little direction. So we decided to try the coaching approach. Todd offers the best of both worlds - having the knowledge, insight, and background of an experienced counselor and the skill to motivate, teach, and promote change of a life coach. We feel so fortunate to have found him and highly recommend him to those who are highly motivated to do the challenging work of change and growth!

I am very fortunate to have found William Israelson as my Personal Trainer for over 2 years now. I have always found Bill as a genuine caring guy who easily relates to people and is very adaptable to meet their needs. I let my life go. I was very over weight and had just been prescribed anti-depressants from my doctor. My daily routine was my job, eating, and laying on the couch watching TV. I knew things had to change. I interviewed 5 different trainers on thumbtack and decided to go with Trevor Hoha and Beyond Personal Training. I was nervous and scared. But, within 6 months I had lost 40 pounds and was off of the anti-depressants! Trevor guided my through workout routines that he designed specifically for me and my goals. He provided me with good nutrition information and gave me the confidence to achieve my results. I have pride in myself, better health and more energy. I have a better self image and I look good! My friends and family are blown away by my transformation. A co-worker and a personal friend now have signed on with Trevor also and are having great results! I can not put into words how grateful I am for hiring Trevor! My advise to anyone reading this... INVEST IN YOURSELF!

Matthew is an excellent trainer! He supported me every step of the way, from meal prep, to daily motivational texts, go pushing me through my weekend at moments, an writing me personal work outs to fulfill my goals. When I first met with Matt, I was beyond uncomfortable at the gym. Always felt like the weakest link an that people were me, but with support I got past all that! If you are in search for a down to earth, personable, and great personal trainer, than Matthews Stotts is your guy!

I've been working with Jesse for a few months now with my nutrition. He's explanation and leadership through macronutrient placement according to my specific goals has been invaluable. I'm learning so much! Not only that, he's challenged me with a few personal training sessions that have spiced up my workout regiment. He can push me so much harder than I can push myself and he keeps me accountable to the goals I have set. Life happens and it's hard to stay on track, (even with good intentions) but with Jesse in my corner, I'm not just staying on track, I am seeing results! He is professional, smart, passionate and makes training fun...Even though I'm getting my butt kicked! ;) - Courtney

I work with professional athletes as a sport therapist and found that I was running on empty at the end of the day. I knew that I needed to make a change and knew I couldn't do it on my own. So I went to a local health club with a goal of having a personal trainer to ensure my success. During my tour, I noticed some trainers and thought to myself I don't want the Military looking one, he would be way to intense, after all I wasn't looking to become the Rock. Well guess what! That's who I ended up with. RJ turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to me. He put a life changing plan together that addressed my personality, physical needs and health conditions. As I look back over this life changing process I smile because anybody who knows me knows that exercise, fitness and healthy food isn't something that comes to mind when you think of me by any stretch of the imagination. I cant wait for the next transformation with Commander RJ at the helm. Peter F.

Devon knows how to reach her clients in an organic way. She is very good at listening to what you would like help with and then on the spot and also preparing for the next session with quality coaching strategies. Her heart is in the right place and if I needed to refer someone to a life coach, she would be it!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a health coach?

A health coach is a service provider you can hire to help you realize your wellness goals. You can hire a health and wellness coach to guide you through life changes, keep you focused on weight loss or fitness goals, help boost your mental health, and more. Many health coaches work with their clients for set periods of time as the client moves toward a measurable goal. Wellness coaches come from varying backgrounds, and may have different areas of focus depending on their education and training. Research potential coaches by reading their reviews, researching their academic and personal backgrounds, and learning about any certifications they have earned from coaching institutes. Often, health and wellness coaches sell coaching packages ranging from three to six months or longer, depending on the client’s needs. The average national cost for an individual health coach session ranges from $60 to $90, although prices may range as low as $30 or up to $130 or more, depending on your location and the coach.

What is a life coach?

A professional, accredited life coach works with people to help them make important changes in their life, either growing in their profession or changing gears in their personal lives. They help clients turn their dreams or wishes into realistic, attainable goals. They guide people through the process of making life changes by helping them evaluate the steps they must take to reach a particular goal, then help them decide how — and whether — to take those steps in the most efficient, effective and rewarding way possible. A life coach acts as a motivator, strategist and accountability partner. Unlike a therapist, a life coach doesn’t help solve problems from your past — they’re focused on helping you move forward with new ways of acting and thinking that will help you reach your goals. Some people specialize in particular types of life coaching, including life balancing coaches, small business coaches, executive coaches and personal finance coaches. Some meet clients in person, while others hold consultations over the phone.

Regardless of which type of life coach you’re interested in, make sure the person holds an International Coach Federation (ICF) credential. There are three tiers of credentials: Associate, Professional and Master, which require coaching experience ranging from 100 hours to 2,500 hours.

How much does a life coach cost?

A life coach helps clients set and reach professional and personal goals, develop positive habits, and deal with stress. Some people meet with a life coach once or twice, while others form an ongoing professional relationship, meeting regularly in person or on the phone. The average national cost to meet with a life coach ranges from $80 to $130 an hour. Some coaches offer per-session pricing, especially for one-time meetings; expect to pay an average of $100-$125. People who want to work with a coach over a period of time to explore life transitions, career growth or lifestyle changes may be able to get discounted pricing in a package. For example, three 60-minute sessions cost an average of $300, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $350, and four 60- to 90-minute sessions plus unlimited contact between sessions cost an average of $400. Some specific types of coaching, such as relationship or marriage coaching, cost more than standard life coaching. For instance, three 60-minute relationship coaching sessions cost an average of $500, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $550, and six 60- to 90-minute sessions cost an average of $650 when purchased as a package. Training and experience can also affect the cost of hiring a life coach. An Associate Certified Coach, who holds a certification that requires only 60 hours of training and 100 hours of coaching experience, will charge less than a Master Certified Coach, who typically has at least 200 hours of training and 2,500 hours of coaching experience.

Why get a life coach?

People of all ages and in all careers have called in a life coach. Life coaches are accredited professionals who can help you figure out the tangible changes you can make in your life to reach your goals; they can even help you turn your dreams into goals, if you’re not sure where to go next. A life coach can also help people find their purpose in life. Life coaching clients often have an idea of what they want to do, such as help people or work with animals, but don’t know how to turn that passion into a career. A life coach can help clients work through the options to find a clear path with concrete steps that lead to an attainable goal. A life coach can also help clients make a major career change, such as starting a new business. Life coaches can help clients develop better habits that will make them more successful, acting as an accountability partner. Life coaches also often guide their clients through major transitions in life, such as a career change or other stressful situations that are made easier with guidance from a neutral third party.

What is a holistic wellness coach?

When you want to reach new heights with your health and wellness, consider hiring a holistic wellness coach. Much like a health coach, a holistic wellness coach is focused on your well-being and meets with you in one-on-one sessions to help you identify and reach your targeted goals. A holistic wellness coach will typically have you take all components of your life into account when working to achieve your goals. If your goal is to lose weight, a holistic wellness coach will not only offer recommendations for your diet and exercise, but also discuss your emotional health, your work/life balance, your spiritual side, and each area of your life that affects your ability to follow a nutrition and fitness plan.

Although they are highly motivational and often can help clients achieve great results, holistic wellness coaches are not professional health care providers or registered dietitians. Different institutes and training centers provide certifications for holistic wellness coaching, so be sure to research your coach and read their reviews to understand more about their techniques and training.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
