I had the opportunity to use this moving company for a very tough move this past weekend from the 3rd floor of my apartment building all the way down to the first floor on the opposite end!!! They came through for me with professionalism, first they gave me a quote and asked me what my budget was and was able to work with my budget! Then the four movers came to home on time in fact a little early even to set up! They worked hard, they did the whole move in 3 hours and I still only had to pay the flat rate we discussed nothing more or less. The movers were very polite and very careful of all of the items moved out of my old apartment into the new one and were very organized and professional! I would definitely not only use this company again but I also recommend it to anyone else whether you are doing a small move within your apartment building or moving across town! My mother was there during my move and will also be using the services and spreading the word! For the price I paid they over exceeded my expectations!

TK Movers just recently made me experience the best move of my life (and this is #7!) They did a great job, were fast and efficient, and were very careful with moving both in and out of townhomes with stairs. Both men were very professional and extremely friendly. I would absolutely recommend TK Movers to anyone who values true, quality work! Thank you guys so much!!

We had to move out on extremely short notice and we were scrambling to find a moving company. Spoke with Gail and she could get a crew to help us the next day! This meant we did not have a lot of time to pack anything so we agreed to a third person to help with the packing and moving. Moving day came and I got a phone call from the crew letting me know roughly when they would be arriving. About an hour before the crew arrived Ron came to see what all needed to be packed and moved. He was very respectful and I appreciated the open communication. When Salvador, David, and Ross arrived they immediately got to work and worked their butts off to pack and move our three bedroom house with lots of very difficult furniture to move. They we very respectful and careful with our items and we actually had some fun while doing all this. They took their break after everything was loaded and met us at the storage unit right on time and unloaded the trailer in record time while managing to pack everything in the unit with awesome tetris skills! There were absolutely no hidden fees and we were charged exactly what we were told we would be for the hourly rate and supplies and everything. Well worth the money we paid and we will definitely be using this company again when it comes time to move out of the storage unit and into our next house! Very very impressed with the work they did and will recommend them to anyone! Great job guys!

Tyler and Joe were amazing. They showed up on time and were super careful with everything. We had just painted the home we were moving into and they were very careful and didn't nick a thing! They were also very fast - literally running the whole time. I had heard horror stories from friends who've used other movers so I was a bit nervous, but these guys were amazing. I highly recommend!!!

We'd highly recommend Tyler and team for moving! They were professional, friendly and efficient throughout our day of moving from a condo/storage unit into our house. They were able to fit large furniture through very tight door frames efficiently and went above and beyond to help with some very challenging heavy pieces. They also removed doors to accommodate wide furniture and put down mats to keep our floors clean. We'd definitely work with them again and were very pleased!

Had a very good first experience hiring a mover with Paul Bunyan Moving! They arrived on time on time for the move and was very professional through the process. The move was very quick and efficient and they knew exactly what to do with each piece of furniture. The guys are very friendly and is willing to accommodate to your needs for the move. The price they quoted are fair and is exactly what was charged at the end of the move. Excellent experience overall and will definitely recommend.

My initial hire, outside of this app, had contacted me the day before my move and informed he was injured on another job and had to cancel on me. Understandable but more stress in a move. Jumped on Thumbtack and Carlos from College Moving Labor contacted me within 15 minutes. We were on the phone the minute I got out of the office. Had two movers available for the next day. The young men helping me out were great. Very cautious with my possessions, careful of the property I was moving out of and the rental truck. They were professional and I enjoyed the conversations we had during the process. They made a stressful day of moving an enjoyable experience. Definitely going to check their availability next time I have a move.

5-Star Movers immediately answered my message and were able to move my treadmill same-day! They responded quickly to all of my questions, arrived when they said they would, and managed my extremely heavy treadmill without any damage to it or my home. I would definitely use their moving services again.

I had movers move furniture, and boxes from garage into upstairs. They did everything very professional. They made sure they did not bang against any walls, they helped put the bed together and that was very helpful. I also noticed they made sure they were bending and lifting properly to ensure no accidents.

Daymakers moving moved me and my husband from our old house to our new house this past summer. I was pregnant at the time so the help was more than appreciated. The workers were respectful and completed the job in a timely manner. They were gentle with our boxes and furniture. We are so grateful for daymakers moving because they made the job so easy and worry free for me and my husband. I would recommend them and do recommend them to any one who is moving.

Alex and company are amazing! We were being strung along by our big-name moving company, and needed to be in Missouri to start a new job. After yet another delay, and yet another "guarantee", we were desperate and found AmerApex Moving. Alex contacted us on a Monday and by Thursday, they were there! They were absolute lifesavers, and did everything they could to take care of our belongings and make us feel at ease. And then they were in Missouri by Saturday to unload everything in our new house! On top of that, they are incredibly friendly and made a stressful situation feel much lighter. We can't thank Alex enough, and wish every moving company out there could be half as professional and effective as his!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
