I have sought help from therapists off and on in my 60+ years of living and thankfully, have been helped through some rough patches by a few of them. Too many times though-I didn't find the guidance, tools or insight that I needed in order to make some healthy decisions for myself. More often than not, I would stay stuck spinning because one size does not fit all when it comes to personal therapy. Tahmi is an excellent therapist. She is worth every penny and then some extra brownie points for being so awesome. She makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. She is very conversational in her approach and everything she has to offer as far as technical and life advice she is very helpful. If you have a session with her, you will sit on a couch or a chair and tell her what you're comfortable telling her. She never pries for information and she helps you think about your problems in a way that doesn't minimize them, but helps you think about them in a different way than you would by yourself. I am so glad that I went on this site and contacted her 2 months ago. I can't recommend her highly enough!!

I've come to know that looking for the right therapist is more difficult than finding that perfect bathing suit. Jessi felt RIGHT from the beginning. I saw quickly in our session a knowledge of therapy skills that approached my needs quickly.     Bennett and I worked together at South Metro Human Services for approximately a year and a half. I believe Bennett excelled at working with clients who experienced psychosis, negative symptoms of schizophrenia, and, especially, cluster B personality disorders. He consistently made clients feel heard and supported. Bennett also demonstrated skill in engaging clients in conversations that facilitated self-advocacy with external providers, and, when clients faced barriers to advocating for themselves, Bennett stepped in to make sure their concerns were addressed. As a co-worker, Bennett was an incredible support and ally. As one of the few female employees on our team, I struggled a great deal with the experience of implicit and accidental sexism. I also came to this position fairly early in my recovery from my own experiences with depression and suicidal ideation and an eating disorder. Bennett was an amazing partner in this-- he validated my frustrations, problem-solved difficulties, called out other colleagues, and overall made going to work a happy and hopeful experience. I cannot recommend Bennett Jones highly enough. As a co-worker in the mental health field, and as a friend and support person who filled a puedo-therapist role in my daily life, Bennett is a deeply compassionate and remarkably gifted listener, and working with him has enriched my life in ways I am still discovering, months after our working relationship has ended.

        What is a psychologist?

        A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

        A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

        What are the types of psychologists?

        How much do therapists cost?

        If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

        Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

        Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

        To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
