Small commercial painting project. He showed up on-time, spent a few minutes to understand the job and he got right to work. He carefully covered the wood floors with drop cloths and cleaned up when finished. Very professional.

He, sanded and stained my entryway door, removed my bathroom ceiling fixture seeing how I couldn't get down so I could clean it then he replaced it. He moved my living room furniture, assisted with taping off woodwork then he assisted with the painting. When everything was done he clean up after himself. He agreed to come back on Monday to paint my kitchen and dining room.

Don White recently performed tiling, wallpaper removal and painting for me. Don did an excellent job. His "administative process was sound - he wrote out a proposal of services, his price was for the work to be done - not per hour - and committed to a completion timeline. I feel his pricing was very competitive. The kitchen tile backsplash was done within the timeframe he committed to. He was on time, respectful of my time and cleaned up thoroughly. The tile work was straight, good spacing, and very precise cutting around outlet openings. I love the final product. i then asked to remove 30 yr old wallpaper. He comitted to the project and completed the removal as well as painting the room as needed. Don is trustworthy and has high integrity. I'll be following up with him for future hoome project needs. Partial bathroom remodel to include drywall/texture work, painting, some minor carpentry, fan replacement, and vanity and cabinet removal/installation; Jamie did an excellent job and went above and beyond in problem areas were not even aware of. He was easy to work with and his work was very affordable. I would definitely hire again.

Mark was the only Handy Man on ThumbTack that actually reached out to me. He showed up the next day, offered great advice and gave me a very reasonable quote. He showed up the 2 days he said he would and did a great job (gutters, flashing, painting). I now have my Handy Man for life. I’m actually putting together another list of things for him to do right now. 👍👍 Highly Recommend.

My company operates a property management business for large single family homes. We have used Harald Christiansen as a painting contractor since 1985. Harald's workmanship is excellent and his rates are very reasonable. Free estimates are promptly prepared. His work is performed on-time or ahead of schedule and is always fully completed. Harald's clean-up is superb! He appreciates that he is working in someone's home. Harald is courteous, friendly, prompt and great to work with. I highly recommend Harald for all your painting and wallpapering needs. Robert Molitor, Molitor & Associates, Inc.

We needed a wall built in our finished lower level. Cory was able to get to work right away and the quality of work is wonderful. Cory went above and beyond cleaning up each day before he left. The work was done when he said it would be and for the price he quoted. We have already hired Cory again to paint our home. I recommend Cory highly.

I started using In Town Painters a year ago for our apartment complex. The last company I had was expensive, the jobs were never up to my standards and I always felt like I had to call them back. Working with In Town Painters originally was to do repaint after residents moved out of the complex and to freshen up the apartment for new residents. After the first couple months and about 10 apartments later, I never had an issue with quality of service, never had to have them come back, they always were on time and finished jobs according to the schedule. Another thing I really like was how they taped off all woodwork trim, windows, doors, laid plastic over flooring and furniture to protect the apartments. I am proud to say we still work with In Town Painters. They finished up the main entry and our offices last month they gave us great ideas and aided us in color and paint selections for the office. It feels and looks great. If you are looking for an honest, fast, great priced painting service. These guys are the ones to call.

Northern Walls Painting was able to give an quote very quickly, and started the job within only a few days at a very reasonable price. They almost could finished the job at estimated time frame, but got some delay due to bad weather, which is totally OK to me, considering another contractor I quoted asked me to wait for 4 weeks before he can start to work. The outside of house looks great again after the job and I'm 100% satisfied.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
