I had to place carpet over some wood steps that were mismatched with the new laminate flooring. Ty came out to the property viewed the work to be done and accomodated my schedule by confirming the type of carpet to be placed. The initial phone conversation gave an estimate that was lower than what the job actually indicated, but they made it right and now I have scheduled more work with this company with their friendliness and willingness to accomodate a busy schedule. I have recommended them for our church carpeting needs too.

Greg installed an extremely hard wood walnut flooring that had some defects. In the end, our flooring (done throughout our home) looks great. I appreciate his hard work and would hire him again.

We had a mess going trying to do our remodeling ourselves and it was overwhelming to say the least! We called Don and he came out and gave us fair, honest estimates for our wood flooring install, taping and painting the sheetrock we put up, removal of old wallpaper and paintin, ceramic tile installation and refurbishing our deck. Every job completed, professionally and beautifully, my husband and I are very happy with Dons work and we've recommended him to our friends and neighbors.

1) Polite 2) Professional 3)Punctual 4)Perspicacious 5)Passonate. This defines Joe Paulus' Laidrite flooring. To anyone seeking to preserve the beauty of your hardwood floors Joe's adept craftsmanship is superb. On our initial phone conversation Mr. Paulus recommended forwarding pictures of the existing flooring. I sent him 17 pictures of my original 1937 floors which had been victim to many years to tenant abuse. Upon receiving the pictures, Mr. Paulus phoned back and went out of his way to do an actual visual that same evening!! I was beside myself that an individual would "grab the bull by the horns" that quickly. To my utter amazement I detected within Joe's eyes that this would be a "mission" that he wanted & or to conquer. I felt the fire in his belly!! The adept craftsmanship put forth by Mr. Paulus transcended the floors to a glass like finish. Mindbogling(sp) to say the least!! To those that truly want to preserve and cherish the natural beauty beneath your feet, I will forward all 17 "before" pictures and allow you the opportunity to witness the finished product at my residence. Magnifico!! With good health to all.

I hired Barry to do several jobs around my house. He replaced the door sweep on my front door and fixed a flapper on a toilet for me and did some caulking in my bathroom. He also removed some laminate flooring in a room and will be painting several rooms for me. He is very professional and always responds in a timely manner I feel confident hiring Barry and would highly recommend him to anyone needing home improvement or repair tasks.

We needed carpet in our home to list it for sale. Trestan was able to meet with us in our Woodbury home around our busy schedule, and helped us pick carpet to help make our home look it's best. He did a beautiful job. All of our friends and our realtor wish they could buy our home thanks to his fine work. Trestan was respectful and kind to our children who never seemed to be in his way. Though they were very curious trying to stay right by his side. If I could give him 10 stars I would. He is honest, genuine, knowledgeable, and kind. I will refer him to my closest friends and family. Even when I called to ask him for an extra flooring service (we needed a repair to some of our existing flooring) he offered advice and help.

Julio, Has completed multiple jobs for us! Some planned and some as a result of disaster. When disaster struck he came over as soon as he could to assess the issue! He installed stairs to an attic so we could enjoy extra storage space! He finished a laundry room counter so we could enjoy more space for folding. A fireplace mantle on the fireplace was very small and unimpressive. He found reclaimed wood for us with three pricing options so we were able to pick the piece of wood that not only looked great but met with our budget restrictions. He installed the mantle and also found smaller reclaimed wood for shelves. Everything was stained to the color we requested and installed. Lastly we had a shower leak through the kitchen ceiling ( the disaster) he fixed the tile leak, ensures the area was properly drying and mold free and once we were sure the problem was fixed repaired the kitchen ceiling. He is dependable.. He gets back to you when he says he will, agrees to changes in the job, listens, is personable, cleans up and great to have in our home. I would highly recommend!

Chris did a great job building some cubbies above our entryway bench and coat rack. He matched the color and look of previously existing cabinetry perfectly and found creative ways to take cost out of the project overall. Blew are very happy with the result and would recommend Chris for any project.

I recently moved to the area and ask around about flooring companies and was given this flooring company for a recommendation. I had a living room done in wood, a sunroom done in barnwood and my bedroom carpeted. They are beautiful. The owner dropped by twice daily and the installers were meticulous. Ver respectful and detailed oriented. Would recommend them highly and have. Thanks for a great job--you made it painless.

They did a great job with a difficult floor. I had lots of pet stains and repair work. One bedroom was so bad they replaced the whole thing with new wood. In the end the floor turned out awesome and was exactly what I was hoping for. Thanks, I will definitely recommend and use them again.

Merl did a great job with my kitchen, taking the time to really understand my vision when other contractors thought it was silly. But, when it was all together, the combination of epoxy countertops and a penny backsplash looks amazing. Merl and her team were very professional, and they even gave me a discount after I smudged the wet countertops and she had to refinish them.

Evan was very great to work with. Very communicative; very responsive. (I had a lot of questions). I thought his first quote was high; but when I shared that with him, he made additional efforts to price match and also get me eligible for a new program. The price was awesome; lower than Home Depots! and the quick turnaround for installation was great too. (It was a 2+ week wait to schedule with home depot). The installation guys were fantastic as well. They were very friendly and respectful of my house, my belongings. Unfortunately they did get a late start; but that happens. I'd definitely recommend using EH Flooring. Great job guys!

Matt responded promptly to our calls and emails. He explained the rationale for each option on our project. We keep coming back to him for our projects (four so far!) because we know the workmanship, pricing, value and beauty of each one will have been outstanding. His time and attention helping us pick out exactly what we wanted was extraordinary. Having the samples brought right to our home was one of the best parts of working with him. We couldn't recommend him more highly!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
