Deborah provided professional consult services for redecorating our formal living room. This project included discussions around color selection for paint, as well as fabric for drapes and the related rod hardware. We spent a good amount of time, over multiple sessions, looking at a variety of fabrics for the new drapes. Once we'd finally made a decision for the drape fabric, we went on to discuss the type, color and style of the rods. Once all decisions were made, she delivered high-quality drapes in a timely manner, and oversaw the installation process. During installation, we noticed a (manufacturer) flaw in one of the rod brackets. Deborah quickly resolved this with the manufacturer and we received a new replacement bracket very quickly. I am VERY happy with the end result of this project, and will be working with her on future planned projects in our home. In addition, I have referred several friends to her.

Beth was great to work with, extremely knowledgeable and great at listening to my needs. She created a space of comfortable elegance that transformed my 90s living room to a contemporary gathering area. She also designed the conference room and lobby at my place of business. The color pallete she recommended was professional yet inviting. I will utilize her skills and services again in the future.

Jennifer Purcell, Palettes of Color, painted the entire interior of my condo in Loring Park. In addition to doing a quality job, Jennifer used quality paints and supplies to ensure that the smallest details were managed and my furnishing were all protected and respected. She also helped me with color selection and design decisions. I highly recommend her for your painting and design needs.

After pulling the carpet to expose hardwood floors, we wanted a fresh look in our living room. We asked Jenna for some suggestions on wall color and general decor. We planned on keeping some of the wall art already decorating the room, so Jenna pulled a color from the artwork and presented us with some color options. We knew there would be some work involved, including stripping one wall of 20-plus-year wallpaper and covering a darker color to lighten the room. Nevertheless, the end result was/is fabulous! Jenna pointed us in the right direction and we couldn’t be happier. Jenna even suggested the brand of paint to use. It was so good I’ll use it for all future interior paint jobs (sorry, no product endorsement here; you’ll have to ask Jenna).

I hired Amazing Spaces in the summer of 2015 to help stage my Townhome so that it might sell. I had had the home on the market in the spring and saw very little activity. After the staging I had more activity and sold the house to someone who saw it the very first day. The Townhome was empty when Debra came. She gave me advice on details to update - door pulls, paint colors, fireplace painting, etc. I chose the changes I was willing to make. Debra brought in all the furniture and decor items. My home was beautiful! Debra was very accommodating to my schedule and easy to work with. Some of the people who saw my home, hired Debra to help with their homes which weren't even for sale. It was that beautiful! The money was well spent!

Richard came and hung all our artwork when we moved into a new home. We love his decisions on what should go where and how it should be hung - eye level! He also works quickly and has a great eye for coordinating wall color and decor with pictures. He was fun to work with and we are delighted with the results. We would recommend him without reservation.

David created beautiful homes for both myself & my son. His magic is in his listening (and taste!!) He heard what we wanted and within those parameters selected great furniture and accessories. He oversaw the renovation of my kitchen while I was traveling and I returned home to my dream kitchen. My Malibu home became a "showstopper" and the colors complemented the ocean outside. David is prompt, caring and saved me money (he's a GREAT SHOPPER!) He added a unique touch to the decor and introduced pieces and ideas that I would never have come to on my own. David created a contemporary paradise for me and a warm, comfy, more traditional home for my son. Whatever the genre, David hears what you want and then improves upon your vision. I loved working with him!!

Shelly met me at my exisiting home to determine style, color and design needs; afterwards we had a second meeting at the model home to determine type of treatments, colors and the immediate needs I will have when I move into my new home. She brought fabric swatches and definitely made numerous recommendations that enhanced my expectations. She has more books and samples that she will be able to look further at to determine for her final presentation and pricing. Very thorough, timely and organized with the ability to listen to what my needs are for this new home.

I needed help with picking color schemes and materials for the remodel of my condominium. Staci did a great job; she picked excellent colors, provided great ideas, and kept my budget in mind when doing so. She got the work done well ahead of what I expected. I am doing most of the work myself and she was able to let me know what I could accomplish myself and where I might want to seek a professional. Overall I am very satisfied.

I hired Lauren to help with space planning, furniture, lighting and paint color selection. We had a phone conversation before meeting and she understood exactly the look and feel I wanted when she arrived. I was pretty set on having gray walls but didn’t want my home to feel cold. Lauren picked a fabulous dark charcoal for my office and a sophisticated light gray for the main living spaces all open to each other. Her suggestion for furniture placement was something I wouldn’t have thought of myself but love how it maximizes the space. Lauren is professional and very sweet to work with – I highly recommend.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

      • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
      • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
      • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
      • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
