We hired Mark to replace broken/worn-out hinges on kitchen cupboards. We went on to have him install slides on sticky drawers -- and make an entirely new drawer unit and a new cupboard door. Beautiful carpentry work. Easy to work with. I'm sure we will be calling him again.

As with any house, 55+ years old, there are uneven floors, out-of-date finishes, no-longer-standard fixtures, a bad update or two and odd corners. Our job for Jamie was to work with all of those realities and still complete a finished carpenter's quality replacement of baseboards and casings throughout the upper level. Not a single glitch, situation or scenario was too much for his skill level or his friendly, calm demeanor. A relaxed, yet professional attitude was necessary for this job. He is the only carpenter we'll ever call from this day forward. Oh, and he even got our freaked out Chihuahua to mellow out.

Chris is absolutely the best contractor that I've had the privilege to engage on any of my Projects (and there have been quite a few). The finish carpentry expertise that he provided for the floor trim, doors, windows (sashes and jambs) on my house was absolutely outstanding. It all looks brand new (or actually better than new). If you're looking for your project to be done right, on-time, and on-budget, then I can think of nobody better for you to contact than Chris. I give him my highest rating and endorsement and would definitely contact him again with any future carpentry needs.

We started installation of 500 sq. ft. of cork flooring in our basement, then quickly realized it was going to be more complicated than we had realized. After finding Adam through Thumbtack, he was quick to come out and gave us an assured assessment of our situation and how he could help us. Less than a week after figuring out that we needed serious help to finish this project, we have a completed basement floor that looks utterly fantastic. Adam and his guy were top-notch – skilled, professional, fast, courteous. I'd use them again, as well as recommend them to anyone else, in a heartbeat.

Repair and replacement of the wooden pedestals for both the front and side door were required. Because house is century plus old and both pedestals were heavily worn made the work to be done more complicated. Paul's carpentry expertise produced well put together, new door pedestals.

Brian and his team assembled 2 10'x12' Gazebos for me yesterday in the desert heat. Their precision to detail, commitment to doing the job right and stayed until they finished the job, even though it was in the dark, is what customer service is all about! They were very respectable to my entire family, cleaned up after they were finished and treated the job and my property as if it were their own. The price I paid them for the work seemed far to little, as they were very reasonably priced for the amount of work and skill the job took. I would hire them again in a second and plan to do so soon! If you are looking for someone to help and do things right for you the first time, I highly recommend Brian and Home Run Services!

Judah was amazing!! He replied to my job offer right away and was here 2 hours later. He cut all 6 barstools down to the height unneeded within 45 minutes. He is very friendly and gave helpful tips on how to fix one of the barstools that was broken during shipping. He even offered to come back and fix it if we wanted. I would highly recommend him for any carpentry job you have.

My little house needed a full exterior up grade with some changes to the roof line. I consider us to be very fortunate to have had Gary Johnson of G Johnson Builders as the site carpenter and advocate. He was responsible for all site preparation, framing, deck rebuild, window installation and finish carpentry. His attention to detail, quality focus and excellent communication allowed us to avoid future problems with a final result that has met all of our expectations. I have been so satisfied with his work that any future projects will be handle by him exclusively. Needless to say we are impressed and pleased with his work and are highly recommending him.

Dave was there promptly when we needed him and produced beautiful quality work. He trimmed out an entire basement for us and even installed a custom barn door that he partnered with our supplier on. After all of the trim and doors were hung, he helped us with anything and everything around the job site - from updating recessed lighting to leveling utility room floors. He does amazing carpentry but don’t let him stop there!

Stephan has helped us with many projects to enhance our unique condo in a historical home- which can be tricky. When we purchased the condo it needed quite a few practical and aesthetic improvements in tile, trim, and carpentry that the team did extremely well at reasonable prices!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
