Q & A
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?I have guidelines that I use when determining pricing, but I like to be flexible and work with the needs and budgets of my clients. There is an old adage that says design work can only be 2 of the following 3: fast, cheap, and good. While I think all original artwork has inherent value, I am always willing to work with my clients to determine a pricing scheme that works with their budgets.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?I take a down-to-earth and humanistic approach to design. The first step when working with a new client is to listen. The initial focus is becoming familiar with the current needs of the client, as well as the history of the company [or brand, project, publication, etc.] Then comes the fun part of getting acquainted with all of the client's ideas. Sometimes there are plenty and sometimes there are none both of which are perfect. Before design work begins, all formalities will be handled. These include pricing, timeline, usage, scope, contract, deliverables, and a pre-determined number of included revisions. Typically a 50% retainer fee is requested prior to beginning work.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work? I hold my BFA in Advertising Design from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design (MCAD). I spent 6 months in Weimar, Germany, studying Visual Communications at the Bauhaus Universität. Bauhaus is considered globally as the birthplace of modern design and architecture. I have 6 years real-world advertising agency experience, working first as an entry-level Graphic Designer and moving on to act as Art Director, handling packaging and marketing material for a global Fortune 500 company. Early childhood education included both Montessori and Waldorf schools. These intuitive and largely self-motivated modalities of learning have been proven to significantly enhance cognitive and creative thinking skills.
