My new fence looks beautiful. Matt was easy to work and knowledgeable about my options. His price was very reasonable. He was prompt and got the job done quickly. I would recommend Wittmeier Construction for a fencing project.

Great experience. Julio installed a new wood railing in my home and it looks beautiful. The total time between initial estimate and project completion was 11 days--which we especially appreciated because we have a baby due really soon. Julio has an eye for design and kept making improvements/suggestions throughout the installation process. I felt that he did not cut any corners and truly wanted to produce a quality product, even though I know the project took him longer than he initially expected. Julio is also very friendly and personable. Also, he's great with dogs--we had no problem letting our dog roam around while they were at the house.

Juvenal and his crew went above and beyond, got our fence done during the busy spring season faster than we expected, in just about one day and took care of some other stone projects we needed done in our front yard as well. Juvenal and his team are incredibly professional, responsive, kind and gave me a good price for honest work.

We had a stair railing replaced in our rambler style home. We are very happy with the end result. Bruce kept us well informed throughout the project, especially when there needed to be changes to our original plan. The project took longer than anticipated and our start times were often delayed. But overall, we love the new railing in our home!

GREAT GATES! We waited too long to replace our two old stockade-style gates, but that makes the new ones even sweeter. The Fence Minnesota guys built them in place, so they work beautifully, with high-quality hardware. Also, the posts are bigger and more solid than our old ones and aren't surrounded at the base by mounds of ugly concrete footings -- FM keeps those below grade. Much better aesthetically! When Steve came out to do an estimate, he was kind enough not to laugh out loud at my attachment to our ancient privacy fence with vines basically holding it up. I couldn't bear to let it go, so we said: just replace the gates for now. (It turned out that we needed to replace a small section of fence by one gate, and Keith just did it cheerfully. If he sees something wrong, he just wants to fix it. He worked well into the evening on Halloween!) Come spring we'll get the rest of the fence replaced -- don't want anyone to do it but Fence Minnesota. Even as they grow, I don't think they'll start acting like the big, established companies that charge too much, offer too little, and take residential customers for granted. They saw a need for a company that does things differently and acted on it!

Nick from On Point Improvements did a great job for us at a great price, and he included a solid warranty that the other estimates we got did not include. Our job ended up being a huge hassle, because the previous homeowner buried an electrical line very shallowly and without conduit. Because the previous homeowner did this himself and the locates couldn't have possibly detected this, the line got hit when fence posts were getting put up. Nick really showed up for us here. Not only did he fix our electrical situation, he wrapped our line in conduit and buried it deeper so we can avoid these types of things in the future. I feel this is a prime example of Nick going above and beyond for us. He also foresaw a few problems with the initial fence layout my wife and I proposed, and he helped us come up with some creative solutions to solve those problems. I don't give out five star reviews often, but On Point Improvements definitely deserves these five stars. We will be hiring them again in the future, and we give them our highest recommendation.

Alex and his team did a fabulous job staining our fence, Rainbow Playset and deck. It was a large project and their hard work, positive attitude, and staining skills made them a pleasure to work with. The attention to detail and extensive prep (sanding, power washing, taping, etc.) work made the end result better than we could of hoped. We recommend Stain Bro's for any staining projects you have!

Zach not only did our front and back concrete stoops but also put a fence up for us and fixed our chimney. He did a great job for all 3 projects and also charged a great price. He also got the job done in the time period and the price he quoted. We will definitely use him again. If you need a reference Zach has our info.

I needed a pond removed and the remaining pond rehabilitated with new pump and a revised skimmer. Plus building some garden walls with river rock. Tyler and his crew were polite, listened to what we were asking for and offered good suggestions. The results are just what we wanted and more. Thanks Tyler!

We have had multiple large scale home projects completed by Palo Building & Remodeling. Jim's workmanship is excellent and his abilities are endless! Each project has been completed on time and on budget. I appreciate Jim's ability to be flexible as "surprises" crop up - we have an older home so you just never know. Also, the job site is cleaned up at the end of each day - especially nice since we have small kids. And we never hesitate to recommend Jim's company to friends and family. We are in the process of embarking on another multi-stage remodeling project scheduled for this spring and we didn't even consider calling anyone else. If you are looking for a full service professional you will NOT be disappointed with Palo Building & Remodeling!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

      • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
      • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
      • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
      • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
      • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
      • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

      • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
      • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
      • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
      • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
      • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
      • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
      • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
      • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
