Great service! I had a different plumber come out a few weeks before him, and the issue returned after the first repair. I tried to contact the first plumber because he guaranteed his work, but he kept pushing back his repair day. I had enough of that and needed it fixed ASAP. I contacted Mike, explained the situation and he came out immediately and got the job fixed. Great price and great service! Highly recommend him to anyone needing service done. I will be using him in the future! Thanks Mike!

Bob repaired my air exchanger when every one else wanted to sell me a new one. My repaired air exchanger is now working fine and I am very grateful to bob. He had to look in several different places for the parts but did not give up. Thank you again bob.

These guys were awesome! Having a bunch of boxes and trash, they responded with a fair price to pick up from both our new home and old one as well. They showed up about 45 minutes after I sent out my search - on a Sunday no less! Will recommend and hire again!

Skyline Electric did a fantastic job. From quote to completion Jeff talked me through the process and made himself available for all my questions. The work was done quickly, cleanly and up to the standards of the city. Upon inspection day my father overhead the city official say that, "Skyline Electric always does great work". I would definitely hire Jeff and Skyline Electric for any home electrical repair or projects that I have need for in the future.

I can't say enough about good things about Aaron's service. I needed a repair done the same day. Most other service providers while courteous would not come out on a Saturday morning. After responding to me within 30 minutes of my request, Aaron articulated his game plan for getting my door repaired and was on site within 90 minutes. 1 hour later the job was completed to my satisfaction, job site cleaned and I know have the rest of my day to enjoy. Aaron is reasonably priced, professional energetic and polite young man. He is my preferred handyman going forward.

I was impressed with Steve from the minute we first met and shook hands. He listened to what my wishes were, gave great ideas when asked and never made me feel like I was asking for the moon. His stellar professionalism is hard to find these days, especially at an affordable rate! He followed up with a quote when he promised and got started on the project almost right away. We didn't make it easy on him having to communicate with 2 different people but he managed us just fine! What REALLY made an impression on me was how smart he was with his billing and follow up. He would send pictures of what he accomplished every time (I was only on-site once a week) and send very detailed invoices with a "Pay" now button, which made it so quick and convenient! He sent pictures of any receipts for materials he purchased that day as well. You just never know what you're going to get these days when hiring someone, but I can tell you - I definitely trust Steve and am putting him in my speed dial :) Tasks performed: clean/prep/paint kitchen cabinets, install new hinges and hardware, order and install new countertop, repair and paint walls, install backsplash "sticky" tiles, install under-cabinet lighting, replace electrical outlets, replace toilet components, fix a crooked bedroom door so it shuts quietly, and made any adjustments to work as we requested. AND he came in at estimate! No, he's not too good to be true! He's real!

Excellent work, I would definitely hire them again and recommend them. My job was old knob and tube wiring replacement on an old house which is not a fun job to do and comes with some uncertainty. They were great problem solvers and got it done. I have some followup plaster repair to tackle (no way around that) and my plaster repair guy was impressed that they didn't leave him with a mess to repair but nice neat holes. Michael and John were great and I'm thrilled they introduced me to the Lutron Caseta dimmer system. Very cool way to control my lights and set scenes.

Used Tim to diagnose and fix a really weird issue in my 116-year-old home in Northeast Minneapolis. He was on time, and he was intensely interested in driving to the root of the problem -- which he did. Price was entirely reasonable and I unabashedly recommend him!

Pablo did a great job for us! He had the task of repairing another "professionals" bad job. He had to scrap/repair cracking areas and blend roller marks on our newly remodeled flat ceiling. We were delighted with his work, and professionalism. Pablo took the extra time with us, knowing the expectations we high from our previous experience. Would highly recommend!!!

I hired Easy Landscaping to repair some damage to my property and replace some sod. Jacob is great to work with! They were prompt, prepared, and professional! They even added on to the job by getting some gravel to spread on my driveway. Due to my own schedule, I won't actually see the final completed project until tomorrow, so I can't comment on the quality yet, but I expect great things. And his prices were very reasonable. I'll definitely hire them again!

I am in the early stages of getting my home ready to sell in two years and am looking to add inexpensive touches so it will show better. I decided first to add chair rail and crown molding to the four bedrooms. I got three bids on the project; Dusty was a little bit higher than the other two. However, his walk though took about three times longer than the first two bidders because he took the time to point out problem areas and spent time explaining how he was going ameliorate those situations. I felt confident that I was going to get the results I was after. Dusty gave me advice on purchasing the trim and gave me enough lead time that I could get the trim painted prior to installation. He, along with one helper, completed the project in one long day. It came out perfect...better than I had anticipated. The only drawback is that Dustin's quality of work is higher than that of the original builder. We'll figure out that later. I was so pleased with his work that I've arranged for him do a second project for me later this winter and have two others in the works. I can recommend DF Carpentry without any hesitation. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
