I've never worked with a personal trainer before, and was a little weary, but Brandon has been incredible and instantly put me at ease. In the months we've been training together I've improved my diet (with Brandon's help), increased my strength, stamina and feel better about where I'm at physically. Brandon takes a genuine interest in your goals and sets a plan to help you achieve your fitness objective. As someone who is recovering from an accident, Brandon has tailored my workouts to help me push myself, but also takes my physical limitations into consideration. It's been a great experience so far. I'm looking forward to continually improving with Brandon's expert guidance. On top of all that, he's just a good dude. If you're thinking about working with a personal trainer do yourself a favor and message Brandon.

I really like working out with Lisa. She understands how to train and work with older women. Her nutrition and eating habits advise are spot on with helping me at 55 manage this stage of my life. My weight training routine is challenging but not overwhelming. She makes me strive to get stronger and healthier. I can not wait to see the results of our hard work in a few months. I highly recommend Lisa for anyone who is trying to manage the 50 something stage of their life. It's all about being healthy and happy. Empowered to feel strong and get out there to enjoy an active life.

I have been training at Train Your Way Fitness for 2 1/2 months now between 2-3 times a week. I can visibly see changes in my body and my endurance. I have been training with Michelle Carlson and she has pushed my body to its limits which is something I was never able to do on my own. Michelle has always been on time with her session times and makes sure I get my full value out of my time with her. She even has created my own personal book so I can keep track of my progress and my health statistics. If you are looking for someone who is friendly and kind, but can push you when you're not giving 100%, I'd recommend Michelle!

I started training with Chris twice a week back in December 2016 to slim down, regain my athletic body that I used to have when I was active in high school and college sports), and maintain an overall healthier lifestyle. Training sessions run about 45 minutes long and Chris does an excellent job accommodating to your schedule to ensure that it works with your lifestyle. Coming into personal training I was concerned that I would be injured or pushed too hard to due a knee injury sustained in college playing rugby. In the past with other trainers I have re-injured my knee due moving too quickly with leg days and not giving my knee the proper attention. In the three months with Chris, NOT ONLY has my left leg (injury leg) almost caught up in muscle size compared to my right leg- I have sustained ZERO injuries or irritations to my knee thus allowing me to push my body farther than I have in 4 years. Chris also personalizes all of his sessions to accommodate his clients needs and goals and takes the time to write different plans for people. I will be sticking with Chris until I reach my goal fully and past that to ensure I looks and feel the way I want to. I would recommend Armstrong Fitness to anybody that wants to invest in a healthier life, OR wants to accomplish a fitness goal that potentially has plateaued.

I learned of Jessica through my daughter and I couldn't understand why she loved personal training. I received a few sessions for Christmas and now have become an loyal client! I now see Jessica twice a week. One day for strength training and big sweaty workout, and a second day to learn and practice yoga. I have come to love having someone come to my house and having privacy while I learn yoga. I have never practiced yoga before, but love it now. (There is also no Yoga studio within 15 miles of me). I also do strength training and at at 62 I feel that I am in the best shape of my life. I wish I would have started weight training and yoga 30 years ago. My arthritis has improved, my endurance is way up, and people cannot believe I am 62.

I have just started working with Will, but I feel like I've already learned so much. I went to him with a very weak knowledge base surrounding personal training and weight training. He initially asked a lot of questions to make sure that he understood what I was hoping to accomplish and then planned my training sessions around my goals. He has patiently answered my many questions and taking the time to to teach me the importance of physiology and proper form. I have only worked with him a few weeks, but I already feel that my mobility and strength have improved.

He made sure I stayed at a proper training heartrate to get the best out of the time we had. Very knowledgeable about numerous exercises and assisted me in proper movements to prevent injury. As with a choice to better my health Nutrition is #1. I asked several questions on what should I eat to not feel famished or hungry. He gave me great ideas on how to safely diet and Its Working. I've been working with Andrea for personal training almost one full year now. The experience has been amazing. I've had incredible success both with weight loss and general health and fitness. I feel amazing, so much more energy and stamina than I used to have. I'm 37 and feel like I'm 25 again. I've worked with other trainers in the past and had success but it either wasn't lasting or they had me doing moves that ended up hurting me in the long run which hampered my progress. Andrea is so well educated and tailors the workouts to challenge me taking my personal situation into account. She's always changing it up and making me push myself. I've created good habits with her help and can't say enough good things about her work.

I have been one of Michelle's clients for about 7 years doing both individual and small group training. I currently train with here 1 on 1 twice a week and am part of a very fun small group once a week. Michelle is very good at assessing a person's current fitness level, goals, and motivation level and creates plans tailor-made for her clients. She is very adept at motivating me and knows just how hard to push without being too over the top. I went from doing squats with only body weight to doing them with a 75 lb. barbell on my shoulders! She is extremely knowledgeable not to mention has a great personality which makes working out fun, especially when you see results. Since she is also a nutrition counselor, she offers helpful advice in that department as well. I HIGHLY recommend Michelle!

I've always been highly skeptical of trainers. I haven't trained with a ton of different people, but I don't think I've ever found one that I felt super confident that they knew what they were talking about. Luckily, I started training with Rachael, and she changed that! Her knowledge of fitness and the human body is so deep and well rounded. She can help you with your fitness from every angle that you could want, be it working around an injury or your diet. She knows how to give you a workout that will push your limits. I'd say training with her is great for so many reasons, but I think the best thing she brings to the table is her attitude. She's always so enthusiastic, encouraging when you give her 100%, and she never made me feel any pressure to do anything more than my best. Rachael is so passionate and loves what she does, and it definitely shows! I know training with her helped me to push me to new heights. Every session was a challenge, but it was fun and rewarding! I highly recommend SparkFit! Thanks, Rachael!

Paul has been my running coach for years. When I first started, I had terrible form. I couldn’t run a quarter mile without getting winded. Not to mention, I had aches and pains I had no idea how to work through. Because of his extensive USMC training, Paul was able to train me through better form, improvement in foot/arm placement, breathing techniques and building my mental strength to complete my first 5k. After the 5k, I was extremely motivated and Paul pushed me to complete a 10k then finally the Tough Mudder. It’s amazing what the body can do with proper support and coaching. Not to mention my aches and pains went away, I dropped excess body fat from improving my distance and most importantly I learned how to eat to perform instead of eating because “I feel like I have to.” Understanding customized caloric intake and macro placement was beyond beneficial and directly affected my workouts. My lifestyle is completely different now and I wouldn’t be where I am today without Paul.

No one knows what goes on behind closed doors. Isn't that the truth? When I walked into Peak Physique Transformation Center for the first time 3 1/2 years ago, I was a mess internally, emotionally and mentally. Everyone always thought I had it all put together. I looked the part on the outside. I was a fitness instructor for 30 years and swim instructor/coach. Running marathons, and very addicted to exercise. I put on a good front but actually I didn't have it all put together. I was a yo-yo dieter, I was living in a dark cloud, lonely, depressed and so so sad, I felt lost like there was no hope.. I was scared to walk through those doors at Peak Physique the first day feeling anxious and nervous admitting to the Owner/Trainer I was addicted to food, almost like an alcoholic admitting they were addicted to alcohol. I've been to therapy for my so called Eating Disorder and would exercise hours and hours a day to burn the thousands of calories inhaled, driving store to store picking up my favorites. Dr's and therapists put me on 3 different medications saying this should help. That made things worse. Then Ruth came along, my Angel. I count my blessings every day. I trusted in her from the very first day she became a trainer at Peak. I just knew we were going to click . Patient, kind, and oh so gentle. She gave me hope, I asked if we could meet. Little did she know what she was getting into :). Instead of labeling me with an eating Disorder. There wasn't a label just my eating was out of order. (Disordered Eating). I LOVE IT!!!! I was taught the correct tools, food journalling and the importance of water, exercise, sleep, and recovery days. Oh and so much more. We met weekly, Ruth had a way with words like no other. I always left our meetings feeling confident and an extra pep in my step. A peaceful feeling like I was healing and finally am going to be o.k. Today with a smile on my face I can say I live without the 24 hours a day of negative self talk in my head, I'm happy and loving myself again. I have almost stopped my continues emotional eating and bingeing. Don't get me wrong I'm not perfect still a work in progress. But now I have the tools to live a full , happy life. No more medications, food is my med and I am so, so very grateful. Ruth you ROCK!!!!

I've been working with Jesse for a few months now with my nutrition. He's explanation and leadership through macronutrient placement according to my specific goals has been invaluable. I'm learning so much! Not only that, he's challenged me with a few personal training sessions that have spiced up my workout regiment. He can push me so much harder than I can push myself and he keeps me accountable to the goals I have set. Life happens and it's hard to stay on track, (even with good intentions) but with Jesse in my corner, I'm not just staying on track, I am seeing results! He is professional, smart, passionate and makes training fun...Even though I'm getting my butt kicked! ;) - Courtney

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What is kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a type of martial art whose basic moves are widely practiced in personal and group fitness regimens. In combat kickboxing, two competitors fight using four points of contact — both hands and both feet — unlike traditional boxing, where competitors are allowed to use their hands. In competitive kickboxing, opponents must remain standing, and no fighting can occur on the mat or ground. Kickboxing has its roots in Muay Thai and other ancient martial arts. Some elemental moves from kickboxing include roundhouse kicks, back kicks, hooks, uppercuts and more.

Modern group fitness kickboxing is practiced in gyms and workout studios across the country. It draws its moves from combat kickboxing, but instead of fighting with an opponent, participants perform jabs, crosses, punches and kicks in instructor-led, choreographed routines set to music. Personal trainers also incorporate kickboxing moves into workout routines, spending time punching and kicking the bag. These strength-building moves, mixed with high-intensity intervals, boost heart rate and increase strength.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session. Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.
