Allen replaced a kitchen faucet for me. His knowledge showed when he suggested, and did not up charge ,for new shut off valves that could hook on the lines for the new faucet. He quoted me a price and did not charge any additional fees. I will hire him again.

We were very happy with Bill's work - we had him do the electrical for our kitchen remodel. Bill was flexible, prompt and even volunteered to take our old kitchen cabinets with him so we didn't need to worry about disposing of them!

Steve definitely exceeded our expectations. We initially started working with Steve for repositioning of kitchen cabinetry, but as first-time homebuyers, we started needing help with other projects, too. He seemed to know the answer to every question we threw at him. In addition to the cabinetry, he gave us great results with replacing a water-damaged subfloor and the removal+replacement of an outdated built-in hearth. Not only is he knowledgeable, he's also professional and communicative, and we are happy to count Steve as our go-to handyman.

Greg intalled a backsplash in my kitchen which included tile demo and installed new mosaic tiles. He also installed and finished new hardwood flooring in my whole house. The work was done in a timely manner and was very high quality. Greg was very pleasant and professional in all aspects. He thouroughly explained the work process and was very insightful at answering questions and planning the design. The cost of the projects was very reasonable and I will hire Greg again when I need further services. I highly recommend horing Greg and I have already given his number to several friends who are planning projects in their homes.

I had my interior trim and doors installed and painted. I had started the process a couple years ago, but was having difficulty finishing the project with 3 young boys and all there activities. I hired Adventure 25 to come out and give a bid and they could start the project in about a week. The first part of the process was to finish the trim work and rip all the basement trim out and a couple of doors that had not been replaced yet. The trim work was done in a couple of days. The painting was delayed because of rainy weather. This is where the stress begins. The prep work that comes before painting can be a lot of work and time consuming. There was little to no prep of the trim. Lots of missed nail holes, lots of missed caulking and the stuff that was done was very poor. I was told that this is high quality paint and it will cover in one coat. I know better. It can take several coats to make the white trim look good. There was paint all over the wood floors, tile in kitchen, paint on the cabinets, paint on my trees outside, paint on the concrete driveway, paint on my fire pit. There seemed to be no care in the world. Jaimie kept telling me that we are not painters. I understand that but my 5 year could of done better. It was supposed to be rolled and instead there was pain brush marks all the trim. The one painter said he thought it would look cute to but swirls with his brush on the top of all the door trims. I met with Jaimie 4 different times to which he said how do I make this right? I would go through things with him and come home at the end of the day to find more of a mess and continued poor quality work. I have never seen anything like this. He would say it would be fixed but I don't think he would watch over his workers and forget to tell them things. I am stressed out beyond believe as my hope was to have this finished to spend more time with my kids. Instead I have to redo most of it. I had another contractor come out and told me it would be about 10 thousand to fix. He never had seen such poor quality work. I would not recommend him to my worst enemy. Very nice person but I think he was over his head and always in a rush, hence the poor quality work. Since I cant pay 10 thousand to someone to fix it, I am now looking at a year or so to fix my trim. Very frustrated and angry customer.

We had a few bids on our kitchen and Roger's was the lowest. Now that the project is complete, we can't believe the quality in the cabinets and countertops for the price we paid. We had already bought several of the materials that we wanted for our new kitchen, so Roger worked with us on installing those aspects, too. We were told that our cabinets would be ready for install on a specific date +/-. The night before the demo was to start, we checked in to find out what time they would be arriving the next morning, and we found out that they were running two weeks behind. We were extremely disappointed to find out the night before that our project wouldn't be starting on time, mostly because my wife runs a business out of our home and had made arrangements around the remodel time-frame. Some notice would have been nice. Roger made this lack of communication right, and in the end of we are more than pleased with the time, work, and product we received. Jerry and Anthony are incredibly hard workers and put in long hours and over-time during the course of two weeks to complete our job. Jerry is very particular and we appreciated his attention to detail and making sure everything was done correctly. Roger stopped by a couple times a week to meet in person regarding the process, and was always available by phone or message. We LOVE the little details on our cabinets like the trim, moulding, and shoe moulding. We would hire Roger and his guys in a heart beat for other carpentry projects around our house.

Kel assisted with taking out some kitchen cabinets and installing a dishwasher. He was very communicative from the first messages, and let us know in detail what to expect in terms of work and price. There were a few complications with the installation (plumber needed to be called due to old plumbing, unable to find the correct part on the day of installation), but Kel repeated that he did not want to go over the estimate; I believe he worked hard to keep the cost as low as he could while providing quality work. He is friendly and kind, and my husband and I will hire him again if there's a need. We've been pleased with the new dishwasher and with the small projects he completed with us around the house.

Allan did beautiful work on our subway tile kitchen backsplash. We're selling our house but we know who we'll call when the time comes to update the new place. Thank you very much, Al for helping make our kitchen a selling point in our house rather than a fixer-upper!

Kim remodeled my kitchen. I am a design student at UMN and she was able to use her design skills (I think she is an architect) to help me find better options for my cabinets. This saved me a ton on money and involved her spending a day with me at Ikea. She is a lot of fun to work with and I am currently saving up so she can do my bathroom. The kitchen involved removing a non-load bearing wall, extending the kitchen into the dining room. New tile on the floor, new grant counter tops, new cabinets and all new alliances.

Gina did an amazing job and came prepared making the experience great. We have worked with multiple designers on commercial projects so we had high expectations to begin with. She exceeded them and was easy to work with. We thought she brought tremendous insight and plan on using her in the future.

I needed a kitchen counter top for my kitchen remodel project. All the companies I contacted wanted 3 weeks at a minimum. Merl and Nick came right over, measured, got all the materials and had the most gorgeous counter top all installed in 2 days. Wow what a help!! Unfortunately, the top was inadvertently marred. I texted them thinking all was lost and they returned on a weekend to redo the whole top. It looked even better than before. They treated my project as if it were their very own. Merl and Nick are can do people. They will use their evenings and weekends to help you out and finish your projects even if it involves extra work not in the original scope. You will really like working with them. I sure did.

My 1980's dark cabinet kitchen needed a new make over. Chris Rowe did it. He worked with a cabinet my husband made, a cabinet we got at a Thrift store and he added another cabinet. He took off all my old doors and sprayed the inside of the cabinets white. He then painted white the new doors and added crown molding and hardware. The kitchen looks brand new and even bigger. No one can believe its the same kitchen. I even have soft closing doors and drawers ! Chris is easy to work with and his crew is great……I love his work Thank you Chris Nancy Sibley

Anthony did an excellent job with our project. We had him remove a railing with spindles that separated our kitchen and family room, and he built us a custom half wall/built-in shelf. It turned out perfectly. He was able to translate what I was looking for (but didn't know exactly how to describe) into a plan and then the final product. Also, I was amazed he took at look at our trim and was able to match it just by sight...we have a slightly off-white trim and the former owners of our house did not leave touch up paint. I have been trying to find the match for several years, and he knew it immediately, just on sight!

Shelly met me at my exisiting home to determine style, color and design needs; afterwards we had a second meeting at the model home to determine type of treatments, colors and the immediate needs I will have when I move into my new home. She brought fabric swatches and definitely made numerous recommendations that enhanced my expectations. She has more books and samples that she will be able to look further at to determine for her final presentation and pricing. Very thorough, timely and organized with the ability to listen to what my needs are for this new home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
