I was in desperate need of a proofreader on my first book and Cynthia came through. She was excellent communicating, responsive when I needed to ask questions and the final product was just what I needed. She did not rewrite my work, just made sure things were in the right places. I really appreciated it, and look forward to having her eye on book two.Feb 16, 2018Verified
I am writing a book and needed help with line editing. Homegrown Communications responded quickly. We met and she turned around the first chapter quickly. I was very pleased with her work and will use her for additional editing.Jan 21, 2016Verified
Cynthia Sowden of Homegrown Communications reviewed my manuscript for a huge fiction project (740 pages!). I was very pleased with the result, and impressed with the speed with which Cynthia was able to complete the work, and yet the depth and substance of her insights and edits. There is no doubt that I will use Homegrown again with future projects. Check out Moths, Rust and Thieves to see the result of our collaboration.Jan 14, 2016Verified
I needed a book edit ASAP, and Cynthia not only made it happen, but she exceeded my expectations by meeting a tight deadline. More importantly, she was an excellent editor who significantly improved my manuscript. I highly recommend her!Nov 17, 2014Verified

- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?I try to estimate the length of time it will take me to complete a project and charge accordingly. An absolute minimum price for a press release with no media distribution, for example, would be $50. On larger projects, I will ask for 1/3 or 1/2 down and the remainder upon completion.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?I like to meet customers before taking on a project to make sure we can work together. I listen to your concerns and help you define your target audience and objcectives. When I edit a piece, I print the manuscript and I read through it once to get a sense of what the author is saying. I also make some basic edits with a red pencil. Then I go to the computer to enter the changes and make additional refinements before returning the article/manuscript to the author.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I have a B.A. in journalism from the University of Minnesota and have been writing and editing for 40 years.
