We had Kellington Construction company replace our old hollow core doors in our family room level. They picked up the 8 doors at Menards for us. Color matched stain for our existing wood trim. The 8 new 6 panel solid oak doors were sanded, stained, & sealed to match our existing woodwork at Kellingtons workshop. They installed the doors in a very timely and professional manner. our new doors look beautiful and have updated this area of our home. Extremely happy with the craftsmanship! We are now inquiring on another quote on a roof repair for a bump out window seat. The project list continues!

From the very beginning when Brad came tom our house I was impressed. He was the first one to respond and we felt comfortable with Brad and felt we would get great service and we were right. Originally Brad thought we wanted asphalt shingles but we explained we were looking for the new composite material that looked like Cedar shakes with a much longer life. Brad showed us Enviroshake and showed us samples of some of the work they had done using this product. I were sold. I was still a little concerned about how it would look because I pushed for this product while my wife was interested is something a little less expensive and had a much shorter life. If it didn't look really good when it was completed, I was in trouble. It looks fantastic. Every time my wife and I drive up to our house, we can't help but smile at how nice It looks. Better than either of us could have imagined. On top of how nice it looks they cleaned up everything each day and at the really good clean-up at completion of the job. We couldn't be happier. Thanks you!! Sorry about the picture because it has a missing shutter and t5hat is all my fault. Roy Granum

The first project Cris did for us was adding a sunroom on an existing balcony. He did some precision tile work on the floor and siding, installed a heated floor and built a gaspowered fireplace in the corner. Cris has a good eye for proportions and with wonderful artistry he built a fireplace from scratch from a picture I gave him. The outcome was a visually beautiful and cheerful space that we spend all our time in. The second project was adding a family room/bathroom to our cabin up North. The endresult is a very attractive room with again precision tile work, window installation, wood flooring, plumbing and wiring as well. Cris is a talented craftsman who brings a vision to each job and executes his work with attention to detail. He is easy to work with and is knowledgeable about materials. I can highly recommend him.

Jose and Leah were wonderful to work with when we decided to build a deck with composite and aluminum railing. They were very responsive and answered all of my questions and concerns promptly and professionally. The price was fair and the quality was excellent. Jose even came back the very next day to add some sodding around the cement to avoid our kids tripping on it. We are enjoying every minute of our new beautiful deck. We are very happy with the quality and excited to use it for our kids and to entertain guests for years to come.

My wife and I recently decided that we needed to replace our roof on a house we've only owned for 4 years. Truth be told it was apparent that there was a problem with leakage into the house from the first year we moved in since we saw drip marks in various places in our vaulted tongue and groove cedar ceiling. Since our roof has a slant and pitch that precludes us from using simple shingles we knew we would have a expensive and possibly error prone installation if we didn't choose the right roofing company to work with. My wife performed her usual diligent research and we narrowed down the list of roofing companies to three. We ultimately decided on Craftsmen Home Improvements for several reasons. First, the owner Jim Kosloski was very warm and friendly and also gave us very expert and professional advice on what needed to be done. Alsthough their bid price wasn't the cheapest it also wasn't the most expensive. Second, Jim worked with us throughout the process to re-adjust the final bid several times as we looked to save cost whre we could without sacrificing the quality of the job. Without flinching Jim re-worked the quote multiple times and even was very congenial when we sought advice from another source. To us that showed that Jim would be the type of business that cares about the outcome of the job his company and workers perform. Which brings us to the third reason we chose Craftsmen Home Improvements to install our new roof, namely the work crew that came on-site to do the actual installation. From the word go they were a very friendly crew and the lead installer was very approachable when we had questions. In 2.5 days they completely tore down the existing roof including roof decking and insulation, installed spray foam and batt insulation, new decking and a new roof. Everyting was cleaned up promptly at the end of each day and at the end of the job you couldn't even tell they had been there. I would highly recommend Craftsmen Home Improvements to anyone looking for an honest, quality roof installation and I will be calling them again when and if the need ever arises again for addtinal work to our home. Thanks Jim and crew! And Maria as well!! Sincerely, A very satisfied customer in Bloomington MN.

Paul is a great guy, and very efficient. He came over on a Sunday late afternoon (which I really appreciated) and removed some snow on a satellite dish that was pretty high on the roof. I Would highly recommend him to anyone as he clearly has tons of experience!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
