Second time working with TK Movers. They are the absolute best. Timely and professional. I will continue to recommend them to everyone. Most think an "hourly" mover is the best option. However, TK Movers flat fee ensures a fast and efficient process. They get the job done.

1st Choice Movers was professional, quick and took care of my valuables. I only rank them as 4 stars because when they showed up the day of the move they came with 4 people instead of the 2 I had requested. This was due to a quicker needed move by the movers as there was a funeral they were attending. I do think the move was probably cheaper due to the extra movers - however it's a quite shock to have this happen on the day of a move - moving is stressful enough. I would have really appreciated some kind of heads up, sooner than the moment they arrived at my home. I would go with them again - my only advice to 1st Choice would be to improve the communication process - things come up, just be honest and time sensitive to your most likely stressed out customer! Thanks for helping us into our new home!

Thank you Hedberg Moving Solutions for your rare combination of highly competent and efficient movers coupled with customer service excellence and professionalism. My wife and I were initially skeptical about movers based upon our experience with another major mover in town. However, Hedberg Moving Solutions alleviated any doubts about professional movers we had, and we immediately noticed the high standards that Hedberg holds themselves to perhaps due to being one of the only licensed movers in the area. And Branden even drove the 75 miles all the way to our home himself to discuss our moving concerns and do a free estimate. Hedberg fully delivers what they promise -- excellent service, which included covering the carpets and furniture, arriving with all supplies on hand, and sticking to their estimated time and costs. And Hedberg was uniquely flexible in meeting our specific needs, in doing our 2-day move without loading & unloading their truck more than once; which is something the other major movers in the Twin Cities were unwilling to do. Truly honest and highly competent professional service businesses like this are hard to find. So my wife and I would HIGHLY recommend Hedberg Moving Solutions to anyone and everyone!

SuperSafe Movers was by far the most proffessional out of all the quotes i received. They showed up on time and kept me updated when they would arive as i had a 2-4pm arrival window. They were highly recommeneded and they sure didn't disappoint! I had extremely heavy furniture for example pullout couches and 500 lb dressers and automins that were extremely tall! They made my stress and dounts go out the window as they moved it with a smile on their faces and had an unbelievable energy that the whole team brought to the table. You would be foolish to hire anyone else! I didn't want to use movers but i gotta hand it to them they blew me away! Thanks guys 5 stars!

Submitted the project request 3 days before my move... on a weekend... at night... and I got a response in under an hour. The price was reasonable and better than other quotes I received (but not the cheapest). The movers arrived a little early, but went right to work and got done faster than I anticipated. Overall, it was a great move / experience.

I wish I could give these guys more stars! Showed up 5 minutes early, and did an amazing job with a smile and great attitude. Incredibly skilled, they got the job done SOOOO MUCH FASTER than I was expecting and were joking and laughing with us the whole time. Straight up pricing, no extra hidden fees or upcharges. Just great movers. We couldn't be happier with our decision to hire Paul Bunyan Moving!!!!

Chris is the best. We interviewed several movers for our move across country before we hired Chris and he is worth every penny. His professionalism, and work ethic are second to none. He gets things done on time and on budget. All your belongings get packed neatly and professionally. Watching him and his team work is a surreal experience. What would take you weeks they get done in a day and all you half to do is sit back and relax. He will take extra care with your antique furniture using a combination of blankets and shrink-wrap. Watching him shrink-wrap, is like watching an artist paint, or a dr perform surgery. Equal as impressive is his ability to pack a storage unit to its very max, utilizing every cubic inch of space. He even took special care of our old Vw bus. As he drove cross country high cross winds threatened to tear the roof off. But with some quick thinking and some synches, the roof was secured and he was on his way. We are very grateful to Chris and his team for making our move as easy as could be and we would recommend him to anyone else in a heart beat.

Paul was very helpful preparing an estimate for our move. He helped us with cost saving moving tips (like getting everything ready in the garage to make it faster for the movers). The moving crew showed up on time and worked quickly to move our items. We didn't have a single thing damaged. I highly recommend Piepho Moving.

We recently used Daymakers to help move a family member's belongings out of an apartment and into storage. I grew up in the area, but live in Atlanta now, so we were coordinating from long distance. They made it SO EASY. I've used maybe five different moving companies in the last ten years and Daymakers was hands-down the best. I would recommend them and use them again without any hesitation. They were early (I've never had a moving service be on time, let alone early), the staff was incredibly professional and courteous, and they handled everything with care. I never once felt like something would break or wasn't being handled as if it were their own belongings. These guys hustled, as well. Sometimes with hourly service, you get movers who take their time, trying to rack up the fees. Not the case with Daymakers. They were efficient and exceeded my time expectations by over an hour. Also, I loved that the price included everything - the labor, the truck, and the moving blankets. Other services will tell you something low, but then tack on fees for mileage or blankets. I learned that they hard way before. Daymakers was up front and everything was inclusive, making it very easy to know what we would pay in the end. Lastly, setting everything up with them was easy. Great communication. All around it was the easiest moving experience we have had, and during a particularly stressful time at that.

These guys have moved me multiple times and they were great!!! They cover up everything with blankets and are quick and priced fairly. They dinged my door a but in the first move but I don't think they noticed and it wasn't a huge deal so I didn't really let them know either. They wrap and protect everything really well. Wouldn't use any other movers in the area.

I hired 3 movers for a local move from 3 BR apt. to another 3 BR apt. and had a Thumbtack discount that waived the $85 transportation fee, which was fabulous. The total cost of the move, therefore, was $660. The movers were respectful, worked quickly, and the clock started when they arrived/ended when they were done unpacking in the new home. There were a couple of slight damages including a broken lamp and a small puncture hole in my sofa, which I addressed with the team, but only received an apology. Considering the quality of service, through, I wasn't too concerned about these small damages. I might suggest having the movers place something on the newly shampooed carpet at the new place to protect it, but they moved throughout my new home with dirty shoes. I didn't address this, but wish that I had. Altogether, I would recommend this company. The value was great, especially with the discount, and moving team worked very hard.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
