I had Tony trim a bunch of trees and spray for ants. I don't know much about caring for trees, so I gave him discretion. He exceeded my expectations. I was going to be out of town, so I trusted him by prepaying with a check. He called me after I was back and made sure it was ok to cash the check. Integrity is what you do when nobody's watching, and Tony did a great job when I wasn't there. I had another estimate before him, and he matched it without knowing...plus the spray, which the other guys weren't going to do. He will be my first call for any future projects.

Hired to remove tree limbs he also removed other clutter from the yard. His bid was firm and he honored it. I have since used him to do additional work and am confident he will perform in the same outstanding manner.

I called on a Thursday and was promptly scheduled for a Monday leaf clean up. Our yard has many trees and the team did a great job cleaning it all up! I am so relieved to have this taken care of as this would normally take me hours to do, not including the hassle of getting the yard waste disposed of. I highly recommend Ortiz Lawn and Landscaping!

Slight delay for them to come out because of rainy weather, but once they got on site it took them an hour and a half from start to finish. Tree was down in 30 minutes. 45 minutes to run the tree through the chipper, and another 45 to clean up the yard (with only half of their crew). Price was very fairly priced for the work done. I would highly recommend these guys. We will definitely refer our friends and family to these guys!

Little Buddies, Travis, did a great job on our landscaping remodel. He built us a planter box, redid all of our rock, new plants and landscaping blocks/planter around our big tree. He is very knowledgable, creative, dependable, reasonable and talented. We highly recommend him and WILL use him again!

Jacob provided great communication with me leading up to the work. And the work....wow. I have a very large willow tree that lost several big branches and lots of smaller ones due to recent storms. Twigs everywhere. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the yard looked after completion. Jacob and his team made it appear like it never happened. Great cleanup job. Highly recommend this company.

Green Lakes Landscaping took care of a difficult large, bush stump removal for us. I was amazed at how quickly we were given a very reasonable quote... And then how prompt the service was carried out. Friendly, knowledgeable ( we discussed other possible projects including tree care), courteous, and excellent communication. I would (and have) highly recommend Green Lakes Landscaping for your outdoors projects! I give them two green thumbs up!

We hired Dee to add shrubs, a tree, a small hummingbird and butterfly garden and a few perennials around our home. In addition, she moved a previously planted fir tree that was too close to other trees. Prior to our contact with her, we had met with 3 other landscape professionals but just did not feel they were willing to do anything beyond the "one size fits all" type of service. Dee responded quickly to my inquiry and met with us. She spent time listening to what we had in mind and made a number of suggestions of her own. She spent time looking at our yard herself, drew up plans, met and reviewed them, revising anything we wanted changed. Dee was a joy to work with the whole way. Her estimates were right on, she followed through with promised time frames (though slightly readjusted due to weather). I found her crew to be equally easy to talk with and professional. They also knew quite a bit about the things they were planting. Next time we want some landscaping done, Dee will be the person we call.

I contacted Lane Schmiesing with Monster Tree Service this fall to look at the trees in my yard on Lake Waconia. They were growing close to the house, and they just didn't look balanced and healthy. I also had a buckthorn tree on the property that needed removing. After getting a quick response and bid from Lane, his crew performed the work within days. My trees look great! The yard looks great too, with no debris left behind. Lane did a follow up after the work was done to make sure I was completely satisfied....which I was. Anytime I need tree service done in the future I definitely will call Lane with Monster Tree Service.

Precision Landscape and Tree, Inc. did a great job of taking down our 2 huge cotton wood trees (80-100 feet tall). They were very professional and did a very great job of cleaning up after the trees were cut down.

Jubert Tree is vey skilled and knowledgeable in every aspect of tree care. There prices are competitive and they gave me options for discounts if I wanted to do some of the work myself. A 30-40 foot spruce had blown down and become lodged in another tree, they took great care in assuring the tree was not damaged while removing the downed tree. Also, they provided advice for other trees on my property. I would definitely recommend them for anyone requiring tree care.

I had Clear Cut Tree come out to trim 4 trees. Brian was an excellent communicator, we had to reschedule once due to weather, but he was proactive and punctual on the date we rescheduled for. Getting a bid from him was quick and easy. He did a great job, cleaned up and hauled any branches away. My yard looks great!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
