Corrie and Ty were great to work with. They came out twice to our house to look at the space and help select wood and carpet and were able to match our existing carpet perfectly. Their prices were very reasonable and certainly better than dealing with a big box store. We had some electrical issues that interfered with their installation, but Ty came back as many times as needed to get the last touches installed. Very responsive and the finished basement looks great. Thanks guys for all of your help.

My lesson of cheapest is not the best...I originally contracted with AC/DC hardwood flooring and owner James Leyhe could not have done worse if he tried. He not only botched the job but didn't finish what he started. In steps Joe with Laidrite flooring. He was everything you could ask for in a wood flooring specialist. He was on time, on budget, a pleasure to have in my home, and did a fantastic job. He sanded my floor down to bare wood and gave it a finish that I couldn't be happier with. I only wish I had gone with him from the start!

We had a mess going trying to do our remodeling ourselves and it was overwhelming to say the least! We called Don and he came out and gave us fair, honest estimates for our wood flooring install, taping and painting the sheetrock we put up, removal of old wallpaper and paintin, ceramic tile installation and refurbishing our deck. Every job completed, professionally and beautifully, my husband and I are very happy with Dons work and we've recommended him to our friends and neighbors.

Blessing Campbell are true professionals. They took a side chair that had had both front legs broken off at the top (from being accidentally shoved against something else) and which they said was "unfixablle." Not only did they make it look better, but also made it more solid than the original. The chair is gorgeous! We were also impressed with the courtesy, professionalism, and efficiency with which the projecct was handled--and at a fair and reasonable price. It is becoming increasingly rare these days to find someone of Walt's extensive knowledge of and wide experience in restoring wood furniture. He and the people at Blessing Campbell do museum-quality work. We will be calling on them again for future projects.

I was very impressed with Barry's preparation and commitment to completing my project with a professional finish. Having asked him to do a custom install of an uncommon item, he arrived having already researched the product manufacturer's best practices for installation and came equipped with the extra supplies, such as 2x4 wood pieces that were recommended, at no additional charge to me. Aside from the high quality of work, Barry was very professional, willing to accommodate my schedule, and friendly. I felt very comfortable having him in my home and I will not only recommend him to friends and family, I definitely intend to request his services again. Barry is an excellent contact to have for any home owner.

We had an excellent experience with Mark, Alex and the crew. We were on a time crunch so they showed up ready to work on a Sunday morning - on time! They were very professional offering us large samples to view for our stain choice and impressed us with their knowledge of the floor refinishing process. They were very careful with the wood work around our house. Great job guys!

I had my interior trim and doors installed and painted. I had started the process a couple years ago, but was having difficulty finishing the project with 3 young boys and all there activities. I hired Adventure 25 to come out and give a bid and they could start the project in about a week. The first part of the process was to finish the trim work and rip all the basement trim out and a couple of doors that had not been replaced yet. The trim work was done in a couple of days. The painting was delayed because of rainy weather. This is where the stress begins. The prep work that comes before painting can be a lot of work and time consuming. There was little to no prep of the trim. Lots of missed nail holes, lots of missed caulking and the stuff that was done was very poor. I was told that this is high quality paint and it will cover in one coat. I know better. It can take several coats to make the white trim look good. There was paint all over the wood floors, tile in kitchen, paint on the cabinets, paint on my trees outside, paint on the concrete driveway, paint on my fire pit. There seemed to be no care in the world. Jaimie kept telling me that we are not painters. I understand that but my 5 year could of done better. It was supposed to be rolled and instead there was pain brush marks all the trim. The one painter said he thought it would look cute to but swirls with his brush on the top of all the door trims. I met with Jaimie 4 different times to which he said how do I make this right? I would go through things with him and come home at the end of the day to find more of a mess and continued poor quality work. I have never seen anything like this. He would say it would be fixed but I don't think he would watch over his workers and forget to tell them things. I am stressed out beyond believe as my hope was to have this finished to spend more time with my kids. Instead I have to redo most of it. I had another contractor come out and told me it would be about 10 thousand to fix. He never had seen such poor quality work. I would not recommend him to my worst enemy. Very nice person but I think he was over his head and always in a rush, hence the poor quality work. Since I cant pay 10 thousand to someone to fix it, I am now looking at a year or so to fix my trim. Very frustrated and angry customer.

I am very happy with the hanging swing bed that Tyler & Mariah built us. In fact, Tyler visited our place to discuss the details of the job in terms of type of wood, color, size etc prior to starting the project. They did a great job and will definitely recommend them to others.

Great experience. Julio installed a new wood railing in my home and it looks beautiful. The total time between initial estimate and project completion was 11 days--which we especially appreciated because we have a baby due really soon. Julio has an eye for design and kept making improvements/suggestions throughout the installation process. I felt that he did not cut any corners and truly wanted to produce a quality product, even though I know the project took him longer than he initially expected. Julio is also very friendly and personable. Also, he's great with dogs--we had no problem letting our dog roam around while they were at the house.

We hired Kel Heyl from Studio Rebus Incorporated to replace the wood trim in the upstairs of our home. This included replacing the railing and spindles going up the stairs, closet doors, bedroom doors and base trim along the floor. The process from quote to the finish project was done with a very high grade of professionalism. We have no doubt that Kel would bring to your project the craftsmanship and attention to detail that we experienced. Scott & Jill Hamlett

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
