I just bought an old house that had a few siding issues that I planned to fix within the next year. I was then told 2 weeks after buying the home that I needed to fix my siding NOW, or I could lose my homeowners insurance. Trying not to freak out I contacted Lifetime and spoke with Doug Lake. Within less than two weeks of the initial contact the siding is fixed and looks great. This was a slightly tricky job because the siding on my house isn't made anymore. Doug and his team came up with a plan to match the siding as close as possible and fix the what they could. I am relieved and impressed. I can't tell what they matched and what is my original siding. The contractors even came on the first day of the window (and finished that day) Doug gave me which let me have more time to get pictures to my insurance agent. They cleaned everything up and were very professional. When I have more funds in the future I plan to re-side the whole house with them. It was very affordable - especially considering it was a expedited job. Thanks!

My project involved the installation of about 220 feet of pre-finished 6 inch baseboard in my refinished basement. Previous flood damage caused the finished basement to become unfinished. After a few years of piecemeal refinishing, the baseboard was the last step for completion of the basement restoration. Brian responded with interest to quote the job and came out to my house to review the site. Subsequently, he provided a quote that was fair and reasonable. When Brian actually started the job, he quickly determined that where the basement floor had previously been carpeted and now was covered with vinyl, the baseboard height was too short to cover wall remnants left by the previous baseboard. His solution was to raise the baseboard by approximately 3/8 inch and then obtain and install a 1/4 round shoe. Brian took the time to go procure the 1/4 round, prime it and paint it, and then install it. Essentially, doubling the work. We agree to adjust his quote accordingly and, again, his quote adjustment was fair and reasonable. His finished work was outstanding and of professional quality. I will keep his name and phone number in my contact list for any future work. Brian is pleasant, personable, and easy to work with, and his work is of the highest caliber. He's good at finished carpentry. If you get a quote from Brian, you can't go wrong giving him serious consideration to perform your work.

Scott is a true craftsman. He did excellent work that exceeded my expectations. The project included cabinet trim (fillers, light rail, crown, etc...) and window trim. He took the time to really understand what l wanted so that he could provide a detailed quotation. He was professional, cleaned up after himself, and did exactly as he promised. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a quality carpenter.

Bruce has replaced all of the Vinyl siding and trim around our house, as well as the gable vents and gutters. The job was done on schedule, at a very fair price and we couldn't have asked for a better look in the completed job. When we had questions, he had answers. Accurate and concise. We then had him come in and fix some brick damage that occurred when some big dummy (myself) backed into the piller at the side of our attached garage. Again, after a few questions he completed this job with the same quality of work... (he even cleaned up some brick work from a previous job we had done). The person that did the previous brick work in the back of our house left it in an unfinished condition... but Bruce did not... he completed that persons job too! We have now scheduled him to re-do our bathroom. He allows us to call him with questions as they come up. Now with his help we have all of our ducks in a row. He has accommodated us in the timing of this job so that he will be doing much of the work while we are on vacation. This will help to minimize the inconvenience factor of doing without our main bathroom. To sum up Bruce's work, attitude, and professionalism in one word I could only say awesome !!!! Glad we have you as our go to guy Bruce. Thank You.

Hired then for vinyl siding installation. Great price and work for a tough job. Don also helped me out with some basic electrical work and hanging a ledger board. They got most of the work done quickly, but weather delayed some of it. Would definitely use them again.

We had Mr. Goss build us a 16x16 cedar deck with stairs and hand rails. All I can say is WOW. His crew and Mr. Goss showed up and worked fast to complete our job. They seemed to work well together as I stood there watching them like every owner does lol. We was amazed how beautiful it turned out. If your looking for a cedar deck Mr. Goss and his crew will give any of the so called best decking companies a run for their money. Prompt, respectful, communicates very well. I think he even does vinyl decking. Well worth the money we spent.

I have used Viviano Windows and Doors on 4 separate occasions over the last 15 years. They have always gone above and beyond for me. I have always felt that I received great pricing and found them to be quite informative and helpful in deciding what would work best for my needs. I love that they always gave me lots of options and didn't try to nickel dime me like many other companies.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

    • Trim repair:
      • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
      • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
    • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
    • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
      • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
      • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
        • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
