Jeremy installed our dishwasher despite some unusual original setup with the drain and water line. He was on time, courteous, and helpful. The dishwasher works really well and I'm very happy with the service I received.

I had a crumbling sewer line and some weirdly plumbed fixtures in my basement. I was very worried about cost. Steve and his crew worked on it tirelessly and came in very close to their original estimate. The new bathroom looks great and they even cleaned up after themselves. He was straight up with me and kept me informed every step of the way. Can't think of anything negative to say.

I had water spilling into my basement that was caused by a sewer line clog. The first dudebro plumber that came out made the problem WORSE and charged me over $430, which I will be salty about forever. He then recommended I replace my sewer line because the pipes were so old, they likely had tree roots growing in them, or they had collapsed or been crushed and were no longer functional for whatever reason. The job would take 3-4 Days (in which we’d be without water/sewer) and would cost $5,000 to $12,000. Ya’ll, I am a 39 year old widow with 2 young kids and that news nearly sent me to the funny farm, I literally COULD NOT. Mom came over for sympathy and told me to put my info into this Thumbtack thingy and I did so whilst crying like a 4 year old who just dropped their ice cream. Like 3 seconds later Joe calls me and immediately puts me at ease. He says he can fix it. He can do it a hell of a lot cheaper. And he can do it faster. Shut up and take my money, right? Less than 48 hours later he and his boys are at my house, digging up the traitorous sewer pipes. They work fast and when the sun goes down they bust out the lamps and flashlights and KEEP WORKING until the damn job is done. That very night my kids had baths, we flushed ALL the toilets without having to say prayers first, and I washed the dishes that had birthed their own ecosystem. And the best part was he charged me less than $3,000 with promises that he would be speaking to the city about their crappy pipes and might even stick a camera down there to see just what exactly was up. So tl;dr I have a new plumber, his name is Joe and he kicked my sewer clog’s ass. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

He was awesome. I requested his help for three issues, and ended up having a list of eight issues to fix, from slow draining drains, to leaky faucet, to loose hardware. He got them all fixed and even made recommendation on a fire hazard on my disposal connections! He was prompt, efficient and really reasonably priced. Will keep this business number!

We just bought a home in Lee's Summit, Missouri. When we looked at the home, we noticed a sour sewage smell. Other than that we loved the house. The selling agent assured us that the smell would be addressed before we moved in. We hired Bull Dog Inspections to inspect the house. The inspector and the plumber working with him said they couldn't find the source of the odor and suggested that we just air out the house. The selling agent hired a plumber and he said the problem was that a vent in the basement wasn't capped. So he capped the vent and declared it fixed. The selling agent also had the air vents cleaned. When we did the final walk through of the house, we continued to smell the sewage odor. We should have refused to close until the problem was fixed, but we took possession of the house. We hired a plumber to address the problem and he said the sewer vent in the basement was causing the problem. He replaced the vent and declared it fixed, but we continued to smell the sewage odor. So we decided to approach it from the Heating and Cooling system angle. We hired Calvert Plumbing, Heating and Cooling to do normal maintenance to our HVAC system and while they were here we asked them to trouble shoot the sewage odor problem. The first thing they pointed out was that the furnace exhaust was on the roof and it was only about 21 inches away from the sewage exhaust vent It is unusual for a furnace exhaust vent to run UP to the roof. When it was windy we could smell the odor even stronger because the wind was pushing the sewage exhaust down through the furnace vent. Instead of stopping there, fixing that problem and declaring it fixed, Clint and Chris suggested that they do a smoke test which, most of the time, definitely determines the source of a sewage system odor. A smoke bomb is set off in the sewage system and if there is a crack in a pipe or an exhaust problem it will show up. When the smoke bomb was set off, smoke came billowing out of the return air vent in the main living area. They cut into the return air vent to take a look and found a 2 inch sewage exhaust pipe inside the return air vent. The return air vent has been pushing toxic sewage gas through the whole house. Clint and Chris from Calvert Plumbing, Heating and Cooling didn't give up until they found the root causes (plural) of the problem. They systematically diagnosed the problem, one layer at a time. They permanently fixed the problem, not with a quick band aid fix, but used the best possible solution to be sure the system was running efficiently and the air circulating in the house was clean and safe to breathe. We hired Clint and Chris from Calvert Plumbing, Heating and Cooling to do routine maintenance on our heating and cooling system and they solved a highly unusual problem that many experts before them were not able to figure out. We are so appreciative of their persistence and their determination to fix a problem that could have seriously affected our health.

I worked with Hadley to repair a water leak the was coming from the upper level of a duplex and leaking down into the basement. Hadley responded in a prompt manner, was professional from start to finish and was able to locate and seal the leak which was coming from the tub in the upper level. Hadley also replaced a knob on the shower in the process. Hadley's pricing was extremely fair, and I would highly recommend him. I look forward to working with Hadley again in the future.

WJR Plumbing was responsive to a clogged kitchen sink providing service in less that 24 hours of posting. He knew what needed to be done. Job required tools that were not available at time of service but he returned the next day. Only disappointment was the water that got on the carpet from the release of the water in the drain and the kicked over bucket of dirty water. But he did take time to dry-vac the area before he left.

When we bought a house in Kansas City, we needed to replace the main sewer pipe in the house. Superior did an excellent job. Not only was the pipe replaced, but every item that drained to it was checked, and any replacements needed were handled with care and top-notch quality.

We knew going into the purchase, our house would need some work - we just didn't know how much. Solid Ground went above and beyond to make our house a home from cleaning out a sewer pipe, to replacing a plumbing stack, and toilet base to correcting bad DIY plumbing left behind as a "surprise" from the previous owner, Solid Ground has educated us as they guided us through improvement process, with kindness and clarity. I'll work with them again and highly recommend them.

I hired Jeff's to unclog a drain in my garage. Not only did they do that, but they also figured out why the drain clogged so easily and fixed that too. All for the price they bid for just unclogging the drain! Definitely a job done right!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

      • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
      • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
      • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
