This was the first time we have ever had any landscaping done so we weren't sure what to expect. Aaron (the owner) was very attentive from the start, he kept us informed on what was going on and seemed to really have a passion for what he does. The work we had done (Paver Pation and Retaining Wall) looks really good and their quotes were in the same price range as other quotes but I feel like we got good service which may not have been the case with other companies - overall this was a positive experience!

Mr. Hamelman is a true professional. He has an engineering background, which enhances his ability to take on complex projects. We had a part of a wrought iron fence with many panels and posts moved (80 feet or so) to another location and welded in another configuration. Mr. Hamelman was conscientious about the welding construction and produced exceptional quality in his work. The project turned out wonderful. It transformed the entire look of our landscaping. He is a smart, respectful and resourceful man. I am happy to highly recommend him for any welding project without any reservations. Teresa and Keith

Our yard was a disaster. Tall grass, one fence completely lost in weeds, flower beds covered in weeds and ivy and random plants in the middle of the yard. Exterior Driven came in and in 3 1/2 hrs had it party ready. They even saved some rosebushes I didn't know I had. Will definitely call again! no improvements needed.

Moved into a new house that had only half the yard fenced. Every other quote was more expensive and 6-8 weeks out. Bill came in with one of the more reasonable quotes and was in within a week of committing. Weekend came to do the work: the weather was terrible. He worked through ice and sleet to make sure that we had our fence completed. If you need work done and you want somebody committed to his work, hire Ross Exteriors. You will only be happy.

Novak was responsive, reasonably priced, and gave me the fence work I requested, without attempting to sell me a fence I did not want or ask for. I would work with them again.

I originally had James with Magnolia come out to power wash and stain my patio. He did an amazing job. So I spoke to him about some other jobs we needed done. He told me they also did custom kitchens, bathrooms and all kinds of stuff. So I had them install an aluminum fence and build an outdoor fire pit with a paver seating area . All I can say is wow! It looks amazing. My outdoor living space is the envy of all my neighbors and friends. I recommend Magnolia to anyone looking to get a good job done at a fair price!

Mike was awesome to work with. His work quality impeccable. He aligned each board perfectly. Better than we imagined with this cedar fence. Mike was very responsive and easy to communicate with via text. The price point was also amazing and that came without the high pressure sales tactics of most of his competitors. Very happy we went with American Built Construction over the other companies. We will definitely recommend them to all our family and friends as well as use them for any more projects we come across. I want to recommend Yury and Yelena Pinigin from The Handy Man for their responsiveness and for going the extra mile. There was a leak in the living room of my house in St. Louis. I live in Texas and had been waiting for a roofing contractor to call me back (not a Thumbtack person). I pulled the Handy Man phone number from a previous project by accident. While this is not in their area, they went and looked at my property THAT DAY to check to see if it was the roof or the gutter or something else. They advised me FOR FREE, pretty much knowing it was not going to be work they would do since Yury is not a roofer. I want to thank Yelena for keeping in contact. Having contractors call me back and show up when they say they will has been a challenge. The folks at the Handy Man are exceptional. Thank you, Yury and Yelena!

KDB Home Improvements did a fantastic job with the framing project for a 115 year old 4-family unit. KDB is a problem solver. He ran into several challenges dealing with an old property such as rotted floor boards & joists, uneven walls and uneven floors. For every challenge that popped up, KDB used it as an opportunity to showcase superior carpentry skills. The crew always showed up on time, with their gear and were all very professional. They were fairly quiet on the job site. They just show up and work. I never had to wonder if they were going to be on time. They had full access to the property and I trusted them completely. There are several more projects that I have scheduled and KDB will get the first opportunity to bid on them. I would use them again without hesitation and would highly recommend them for any home improvement projects whether you are planning a complete gut rehab like my project or a kitchen or bath renovation.

I have been using Beyer General Contractors on ALL my projects. They have hung gates, fixed fencing for me, built me two horse stalls from scratch, hung outdoor lights, fixed stall doors and last but definitely not least they are building me my indoor riding arena! This a company that knows how to seriously do ANYTHING. Not only do they know how to do anything and everything, their quality of work is top notch.. they make sure everything is done perfectly and how they would want it done if it was theirs. They also have amazing communication, you will never be out of the loop on status of work, etc. I can't say enough good things about this company. HIGHLY recommend!!!

They did a nice job doing some grading work around my house, arrived at the promised time, and at the price, we agreed upon. they were very nice and provided a quote on the spot. The only thing keeping this from 5 stars is the fact that the a/c unit needed to be moved and it is now a little too close to my fence and house causing a reduction in efficiency, so says my HVAC contractor. I will also have to do some additional work in the future to the decorative work they did because they used the fence as the border on one side.

We needed railings on the stairs leading outside. Nick really listened to what I said and the completed work was just what I wanted. It was like he was in my head! Both Nick and Branden are very nice young men. The best part was when the job was completed they cleaned up all the debris. The only way you could tell they had been there was the new railings. They also painted my cyclone fencing (after clearing away overgrown trees) and installed my Sun Setter awning over the patio. Now I am trying to see what else I can come up with to keep them busy. Way to go Nick and Brandon.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

    • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
    • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
    • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
    • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
    • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
    • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

    • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
    • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
    • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
    • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
    • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
    • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
    • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
    • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
